Pictured here are Jerre BYRONBUZZ@PSTEL.NET City council agrees with P&Z on special exception BY VICTORIA SIMMONS The Byron Buzz Byron City Council’s No vember nth meeting was short and sweet with very little on the agenda. After approving council minutes and minutes on the Planning and Zoning Commission, they ap proved a special exception for the addition to the existing building located at 235 Hwy. 49 N as recom mended by P&Z. The building, occupied by Barbour Fruit Stand, had become non-conform ing due to the Department of Transportation set-back requirement following the recent DOT project in that area which included the stop light at the intersec tion. An addition to the rear of the building is being planned. The addition, about 20 x 32, will provide a cooking area for a carry out restaurant according to P&Z minutes. At the P&Z meeting on October 24, 2013, preliminary plans for the building were present ed. P&Z approved these based on removing a sign. The approved minutes of P&Z by the council, included a discussion on the preliminary plans for Patricia’s Dance Studio which is being built. At this time there are storm water issues, which Public Works Director Billy McDaniel is working to resolve. These preliminary plans were also approved by P&Z. In other business council heard the official general election returns from su perintendent Betty Sims. They also re-appointed Jimmy Walker, Chris Hodges and Ken Asbury to the Byron Development Authority with terms to expire November 12, 2017. Council approved a reso lution to approve a hiring policy for the city. Council man Michael Chumbley stated that the city did not really have one and this policy will give the city flexibility externally and internally on hiring. After discussion back and forth from Councilman Mi chael Chidester concerning the speed limit on White Road being the 35 mph from Hwy. 49 to past the school, Council approved a list of roads for speed de tection devices submitted by Lt. Bryan Hunter of By ron PD. Hunter explained that some roads were just part of a clean-up of the list. He also said he could check into Chidester sug gestion about White Road and get back to council. Chidester requested it be put on the agenda for next month. Before adjourning for the night, council went into a closed executive ses sion to discuss potential litigation, which is one of three reasons allowed for a closed session by Georgia law. Eligible voters can vote in December 3 run-off If you are a registered voter and were eligible but did not vote in the November 5th General Election you can still vote in the December 3, 2013 run-off for Post 5 Byron City Coun cil. Alan Dorsey and Rick Knowles are vying for the seat, now occupied by Mark Waters. Absentee ballots are available at Byron City Hall, 401 Main Street from November 25-27 during regular business hours. No absentee ballots will be issued on Monday, December 2, 2013. You can also vote early that week before Thanksgiving. The runoff will be held in the conference center of Byron Municipal Complex and this is the only polling place for city elections. Camellia show The Middle Georgia Camellia Society held at camellia show this past Sunday at the Byron Municipal Com plex. Camellia blooms were everywhere and you could even bring your own and get growing advice. Employees honored at MCPC Joshua Biron (center), MCPC’s June employee of the month with Nancy Peed and Lisa Urbanistado. Joshua Biron, Paula Hammock and Monica Warren, were recently recognized as employees of the month for June, July and August respectively, at the Medical Center of Peach County. Biron began with the Medical Center of Central Georgia in 2007 in the IS Department and began with Peach Regional Medical Center in 2012. Josh had to keep the old computer systems running until the new hospital opened and now handles IT issues as well. Paula Hammock was July’s employee of the month. She is a System Analyst at Central Georgia Health System where she has worked since 2006. She began spending time at MCPC in 2012 and helped prepare for the move. She is still at the Byron location many days helping with Cerner and Soarian implementation. Patient Account Rep. in the business office, Monica War ren was the August employee of the month. She has been at MCPC since February of this year. She recently worked the Medicaid accounts 90 days old and reduced the account receivables by 20% in three months.
