CODE OF ETHICS: Seek Truth <5*? Report It - Minimise Harm - Act Independently - Be Accountable. Where the press is free and every man able to read,, all is safe. Thomas Jefferson 4 THE GEORGIA POST Opinions expressed by writers on this page are their own alone. Guest column Liberty lost By Bryan Golden Liberty is lost when it’s seized by government or freely relinquished in response to false pretenses and mis leading promises. Liberty isn’t lost all at once; it’s lost bit by bit. One freedom after another is targeted and taken. Different groups of people are intentionally pitted against each other in order to weaken society, making it easier to di minish liberty. This segmenting is done based on age, gender, economics, religion, and race. Tyrants target one group after another until they seize total control. History is filled with examples of this evil progression. Liberty is lost by force and coercion. Onerous laws and regulations strip individual freedoms through the bogus justifications that government knows what’s best for you or is looking to ensure fairness. Liberty is lost voluntarily when people willingly give up freedom in exchange for government dependence. When an individual is totally reliant on the govern ment, they become an unwitting hostage. The govern ment then controls virtually every aspect of their life by forcing compliance through the threat of eliminating their benefits. A tyrannical regime intentionally puts citizens in a po sition where they are compelled to rely on government for their existence. Liberty is under assault when government seeks to regulate all facets of your life. The enemies of Liberty target virtually every aspect of your existence. Things as basic as the light bulbs in your home, the food you are allowed to eat, the car you drive, the products you buy, your healthcare, and your ability to protect your self are all targeted. No one cares more about your well-being than you do. No one else is in a better position to determine what is best for you than you. Anyone claiming otherwise is lying. The surest way to lose Liberty is by allowing other people to take it. Nefarious individuals and govern ments deceive you by promising happiness in exchange for giving up control of your life. History has repeat edly proven that when Liberty is lost, it is replaced by widespread suffering and misery. Those who have escaped tyranny recognize the warn ing signs of losing Liberty. They are astounded that so many Americans not only don’t treasure their free dom but are apathetic or even complicit in its decline. Anyone who is complacent while others lose liberty will ultimately lose theirs as well. Have you ever thought about what your life would be like without Liberty? Most people have not because they take Liberty for granted. A free society is all they have known. Yet, those who have lived under totalitar ian regimes know all too well the irreplaceable value of liberty and the utter despair that exists without it. Confiscating from those willing to work and giving to those who are not, weakens the very foundation of Liberty. This strategy destroys productivity. As the number of productive people diminishes, free soci ety collapses. There is a point at which there are not enough people working to support everyone else. The result is a shortage of everything except misery. Liberty is a ship floating in a sea of tyranny. It re mains afloat only as long as there are no leaks or cracks in the hull. Once the integrity of the ship is breached, the entire vessel sinks. It doesn’t matter where in the hull a leak occurs. Just one leak will destroy Liberty. Any leak, regard less of how small, dooms the entire ship and all those on it. There is no place for apathy. The fate of each person is tied to the fate of all. We are all in the same boat. If Liberty sinks, every one goes down. Once sunk, it’s virtually impossible to salvage. Constant care, vigilance, and maintenance are re quired to keep liberty seaworthy. Tyranny, greed, and the quest for power are constantly searching for any weakness, no matter how small, in order to sink liberty. Liberty requires good, decent, and benevolent people to care for it. If you want to keep your Liberty, the time to act is now. Pay attention to the many warning signs occurring today. Tyranny is hard at work destroying your Liberty. You can and do make a difference. Speak up and be heard now before it is too late. Smart phones and the rush of Christmas Smart phones are all the rage now and most everyone has one. When I re cently replaced mine, not really an up grade, it is different from previous one and thinks it is smarter than it really is. This one has auto correct and tries to read my mind when I am texting. Nine times out of ten it replaces the word I intended with a totally different word. Sometimes I catch it, other times I don’t. Since noticing this I have tried to be more attentive in not allowing the phone to misread my mind. If you hap pen to get a strange text from me, it is my truly my phone’s fault. Just last week, I texted ”me too” to a friend who sent me something. The smart phone corrected it to mean too. The friend thought I was saying she was mean and wondered why. A few weeks ago, I responded to a message from FB and it used the word obesity which I have no earthly idea where that came from as we were talk ing about schedules but from some thing I typed the phone auto-corrected it to something totally off the wall. It will also change the spelling of a name, though it was typed in cor rectly. I have searched unsuccessfully to turn off auto correct so am stuck with the smart phone second guessing what I mean when typing. Since I do not like typos, the smart phone has conspired to drive me crazy. Which some days is a very short walk. On the other hand, it gives me great pleasure to know that the smart phone is not so smart after all. Takes little to amuse me lately! Something that does not amuse me, is Christmas decorations, etc. being seen so early. I must have slept through part of the year because it does not seem possible Christmas is just over a month away. Stores started displaying decorations in late August and now many people have up their decorations. I just cannot bring myself to do it until at least Thanksgiving. In actuality the birth of Christ should be something we celebrate 365 days of the year but not with decorations and the commercialization of today. Christmas used to be more sacred, something really special but with commercialization and the fact that children get more things throughout the year, the holiday sometimes brings on stress, which it shouldn’t. I tiy to do some shopping through out the year and have done some of that but not enough. David would be happy to skip the tree and gifts all together and sometimes I feel the same way. Don’t get me wrong, I love Christ mas and all the decorations and pres ents, but that is not what it should be about. I’d like to go back to the old fashioned days of Christ mas when it was more about family and friends celebrating the birth of Christ and spend ing a relaxing day together, not a hectic rush of having to be in more than one place that day. I have long gave up on hav ing the whole family together on the same day as they go to in-laws too but my heart secretly would like that to hap pen. As a child I don’t remem ber having to go here and there on the same day. We would go to one grand parents’ home on Christmas Eve and be home on Christmas. Then would go to the other grandparent's home the next day. Did not seem to be such a big deal or so hectic as it is now. I am not going to get stressed this year no matter what happens, I am determined. Even though the oven on my stove decided to die and we have yet to replace it, I will not stress. God has never failed me yet and He always makes everything right so my faith is in Him. Seems each year there is also more and more going on in the communities we cover, many on the same days. We just do the best we can in that depart ment. I also will not stress that Christmas Day is on Wednesday which means we have to publish earlier that week, which will entail working on the week end. It’s all good, that’s my motto. Since my smart phone thinks it is so smart, perhaps I should think about asking it to do a few of those Christmas tasks. But then again, since it can’t read my mind correctly, it would prob ably get everything else wrong too. If you have photos of Christmases past you would like to share, email them to us and we will use them in the Christmas edition. Last year’s edition won first place through Georgia Press Association and we are wanting this year’s to be just as impressive. Wishing you a stress-free week. Blessings to you and yours. It appears we cannot pay them higher salaries but isn’t it pos sible to supply them with equipment to make their jobs easier? Question: What is the total number of employees of the Crawford County School System which actually live in Crawford County? Come on, can Mr. Douglas please answer this for our read ers? Question: Why do we not just bus all of our students to Presbyterian Day School and pay the fees which would be a lot less money than the school system’s total budget which could mean no tax increases? Question: Who can name all foot ball coaches in the history of Crawford County? Question: Who could or would intro duce an ordinance for the county and/ or the county to require yard markers in the yard by the road. THURSDAY NOVEMBER 21, 2013 How beans can lower your cholesterol Its active ingredient for this process is simply the large content of soluble fiber beans (and other soluble fiber rich foods) contain and the process is simply the removal of bile through the stool which causes our body to have to produce more and it makes the new bile from cholesterol. The main thing to remem ber when it comes to the difference between this fiber and insoluble fiber is| that soluble fiber becomes a jelly like substance and slows absorption of fats and sugars and insoluble fiber stays fibrous and helps keep old food debris from clinging to the walls of our diges tive track and colon walls. YOUR HEALTH The reason I’m writing about this today is what probably most of us have seen on the news this past week “on new guidelines for statin drugs” and how it will double the amount of people being able to qualify for the glorious honor of receiving statin drags for their cardiovascular conditions. This news report made me feel like I was about to spit nails! STATINS ARE THE MOST PRESCRIBED DRUG IN THE HISTORY OF MEDICINE and the most prof itable. In 2012 they were a $26 billion dollar industry and these new guidelines could effectively double this! One of the new guidelines is for ages 40-70 who have a 7.5% risk of developing cardiovascular disease and would then be able to qualify for statins. My ques tion is this... “if the number one killer of Americans is heart disease” wouldn’t this 7.5% risk factor pretty much qualify everyone as a statin drag client? This is a cholesterol medicine but the new guidelines are also calling for consideration of the person’s overall risk factor and not so much whether or not they have a cholesterol problem. SIDE EFFECTS OF STATINS: the required warn ings from the FDA include, risk of liver damage, memory loss, confusion, type 2 Diabetes, and add to this list the potential of muscle weakness, joint pain, COQ-10 depletion which in turn causes lower cellular energy levels which can also weaken the heart pump in patients with heart failure. How soluble fiber works: soluble fiber becomes a gel like product that slows down absorption of fats and sugars in our digestive track, (this is why sugar from fruits is absorbed more slowly than factory processed sugar products). Our gall bladder sprinkles bile over fatty foods we eat to help break fat. The soluble fiber makes it not as easy for our body to reabsorb the bile back up to the liver (from our digestive track) and then back out to the gall bladders storage tank. When we lose bile through our stool it forces the liver to have to make new bile salts and the main ingredient that our liver uses to form new bile salts is CHOLESTEROL. If we can mix in more foods rich in soluble fiber (es pecially when eating fatty foods) and lower our intake of starches and sugars (other than the sugars from shouid’have Statins are the chdesteroi most prescribed drug in the history of medicine and the most profitable. lowering diet. List of foods rich in soluble fiber: kidney beans, black beans, navy beans, oatmeal, brown rice, apples, bananas, prunes, citrus fruits, brassels sprouts, green leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes. When in doubt add in some Benehber or Metamucil with your meals. This is pretty much tasteless soluble fiber so it can be mixed into low fiber foods or water and is a good way to help increase our soluble fiber intake. Benefits of a cholesterol lowering diet: helps control cholesterol, lower the risk of diabetes, high blood pres sure, coronary artery disease, obesity, hemorrhoids, colon cancer, constipation and irritable bowel syn drome (IBS) etc., all without the side effects of statin drugs. I believe if we would look at statins and other awe some modern medicine as a temporary fix instead of a long term solution these medicines would serve their purpose much better. Oft times these high powered medications lead people to believe they don’t have to change the lifestyle that led up to the need for the medicine in the first place. In keeping with Hippocrates’ famous saying, “Let thy food be thy medicine and let thy medicine be thy food” just as selecting the right medicine for the ail ment is necessary to hit the nail on the head “we need to increase our soluble fiber intake to help lower or keep our cholesterol in check or we will very possibly become a future statin drug customer.” WADE YODER is a Master Trainer & Fitness/Nutrition Specialist.
