He was preceded in death by a son David Kent and daughter Susan Kent. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Kent of Roberta; two sons, Joseph Harvey Kent Jr. of Roberta and Kevin Kent (Shan- na) of Kathleen; one daughter, Sharon Owens of Jupiter, FL; eight grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Predestination: Eternal life or everlasting punishment Speaking on predestination, Charles Haddon Spurgeon remarked, “If I could open the seven seals of God’s Decrees, I would ask ‘Is my name recorded in that Book of Life? Am I ordained unto eternal life?’” The doctrine of predestination has its origin in Romans 8:29-30, wherein the apostle Paul wrote: “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For those whom He foreknew, He also predes tined to become conformed to the image of His Son... and these whom He pre destined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.” The first to propose the doctrine of election and predestination was Saint Au gustine (354-430 A.D.), albe it not well defined. Twelve centuries later, John Calvin (1509-1564) conceptual ized a more comprehensive dogma. Calvin’s theology on predestination was later in corporated in the “Westmin ster Confession of Faith” and subsequently adopted by the Presbyterian Church. Calvin believed that God, before the creation of man, foreor dained the eternal destiny of every human being—some to eternal life and others to everlasting punishment. The extent to which Calvin’s the ology has been adopted by Presbyterian churches and other protestant faiths will vary from church to church according to its interpreta tion of election, predesti nation, free will, and God’s grace. The most common ob jection to the doctrine of predestination is that it is manifestly unfair because it denies individuals the exercise of free will. It begs the question, ‘Why would God choose certain indi viduals and not others?’ In support of predestination, advocates will cite Romans 9: 21: “Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishon orable use?” Biblical scholars contend this is a passage that Paul should never have written, that a mean ingful analogy cannot be drawn between an inert lump of clay and a living, breathing human made in the image of God. Does not John 3:16 give the choice of salvation to “whosoever believeth”? Does not Romans 10:9 make the promise “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”? And why would I Timothy 2:4 proclaim that “God wants all to be saved” if predestination were true? Further, Catholic catechism 1037 boldly affirms that: “God predestines no one to go to hell.” It is clear that Paul did not postulate a carefully worked out doctrine as Calvin or even Augustine attempted to formulate. The rabbinical schools of Paul’s day taught predestination, but with no denial of individual respon sibility. To press this point, first century historian Jose phus wrote: “The Pharisees taught everything is depen dent upon fate and God, but the choice of right and wrong lay with the individual.” There is no inconsistency in saying that God, being om niscient, already knows what will happen in the future, yet every person—in his/ her lifetime—still retains the freedom to make the choices between good and evil. Thus, the ill-defined precepts of predestination appear to be more an invention of Calvin ism than a creedal statement of the Apostle Paul. My Christmas cheer drama I enjoy being cheerful and Christmas time is a special time to be cheerful and I try my best to live up to it. Occasionally, the Gracious Mistress of the Parson age will suggest I am going a little too far. During the rest of the year I stay out of shopping malls as much as possible. During the Christ mas season, I want to go to the shopping mall and walk around without any purchases to make. I like watching people spend their money on things they do not need and for people they may not like. I like to give cheer more than anything else. Actually, it is the only thing I can afford. And so I will send my cheerfulness into cheer bankruptcy. Whatever that maybe. The Christmas season has nev er been a time for me to spend excessive amounts of money. I leave all that to my wife. She knows how to shop and she be gins her Christmas shopping right around February. I could never figure that out. When I buy a gift for someone, I want to hand it to them right then. She has the discipline to buy Christmas gifts months ahead of time. Something happened this past week that brought all of my cheerfulness to an abrupt halt. I had just come from the mall where I was making fun of people scurrying around trying to find the latest bargain. It is a little strange to me that when people get a gift for somebody they look for a bargain. When I got home, I sat down in my recliner rem iniscing about the day and then I did something I do not normally do. I took out my wallet to clean it. This is some thing I do at least once a year. Sometimes I get cards in my wallet that have expired or are no longer valid. No sense in having things in your wallet that you do not need or cannot use. Several cards had expired and so into the trashcan they went. You can tell a lot about a person Out to Pastor Rev. We can be honest with God even if we are filled with anger and despair because He knows s thoroughly and wants the best for us. Because we trust in our all-powerful God, we don’t have to be weighed down by what someone is doing to us. Be honest with God and he will turn your attention from yourself to Him. We cannot control all of life’s circumstances but we can control ourselves in the circum stance. When people are trying to “do you in,” don’t get bitter, get better. Instead of striking back and taking matters into your' own hands, take it to the Lord in prayer and He will plead your case. God said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay. Don’t give your enemy what he deserves. Forgive him. Returning evil for evil hurts you as much as it hurts your enemy. Even if your enemy never repents, forgiving him will free you of a heavy load of bit terness. Remember, God is watching how we treat our enemies. Although it’s not easy to bless them that persecute you and say evil things against you. But God tells us to rejoice and be glad, for greatness is our reward in heaven. We must show love just as Jesus did on the cross. He said Father forgive them. Now that was love. For giveness involves both attitudes and actions. We are hypocrites if we claim to love God while we hate others. Our attitude with others reflect our relationship with God. Be Blessed! I will not be caught dead looking in that purse. In fact, I would be dead if caught looking. I am not sure what she has in her purse and I do not want to know what she has in there. I love living. A man’s wallet is a little different. He has things in there that are rather practical. There will be a driver’s license, a Social Security card, insurance card, not to mention credit cards. Everything he needs to get through a week with plenty of cheerfulness on the side. Going through my wallet this time I found something that shocked me to the core of my being. There in my wallet, folded up rather neatly and tucked in a comer, was a $50 bill. I cannot tell you the last time I saw a $50 bill. How it got there, I will never know. My father always had a folded $50 bill in his wallet for emer gencies. I am not my father. Ordinarily, you would think finding $50 in your wallet would be a moment of rejoicing. Not so here. It is towards the end of the year, all gifts are purchased for Christ mas and all bills are paid. I like to pay ahead of time just to make sure the bills are being paid. And so there was nothing that needed to be paid at that time. Life has taught me several les sons and one in particular. If you find extra money it means some disaster is about to befall. Usual ly the catastrophe that happens costs more than the money you find. I foimd $50 and so it is reasonable to believe that the catastrophe facing me will cost $100. I did not know if I should men tion this to my wife. It is not that we are superstitious, we have just lived long enough to know what comes around goes around and what goes up usually comes down. What is going to happen now? What is going to go wrong? What in the house is going to fall apart? Then my dilemma was solved. My wife came into the room and said, “I was wondering,” and she was stammering a little bit as she said it. “I was wondering if per haps we could take the grand children out for Christmas lunch tomorrow. I know it costs a lot, but I think they would enjoy it.” I smiled and she looked at me a little quizzically and asked, “What are you smiling about?” It was then I pulled out of my wallet the neatly folded $50 bill and waved it in her direction and said, “I think Christmas lunch with the grandchildren tomor row would be a fantastic idea.” Some people worry about what they do not have. I worry about what I have to make sure I am using it in the best possible man ner. “It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises rmto thy name, 0 most High” (Psalms 92:1). I am thankful for what I have but I am also thankful for what I do not have. Nothing takes the place of a contented heart and my con tentment rests in the Lord Jesus Christ. I need nothing more. REV.
