I must admit that blessings and favors have not been in short supply. At the same time, I must also tell you that these past months have been perhaps the most stressful in my lifetime. Losing my mate of 58 years has been the most trying milestone in my tenure. Most of you are aware that Claudine lost her battle with dementia and illness, and passed away on March 10. Picking up the pieces and pressing onward required a strength that I wasn’t sure of possessing. But there is real ly no other sensible course. There were literally hun dreds of calls, Emails, cards, condolences, and prayers during my lady’s departure; of which I am truly appre ciative. May I remind all that such hearts and voices always ’’make a difference”. I would be highly remiss, if I did not make a space to express my gratitude to friends and co-workers, for their innumerable acts of kindness, thoughtfulness, and prayers; that have been afforded me dur- ing this difficult time. We have been a part of Middle Georgia for more than 50 years intermit tently, while serv ing 20 years on active duty with the U.S. Navy — pasturing multiple church es — and subse quently laboring in Foreign Missions — living in Thailand, Taiwan, and the Philippines. There thousands who have befriended and supported the Gatlyns, mul titudes who have prayed for progress in every dimension. Those who have ’’partners and pillars” standing by your side, are never alone in efforts of ministry, occupa tion, or leadership! Money cannot buy the personalities and punctuality that have been channelled in this direction. Neither can eloquence (of which I would have been at a loss) entice the sin cerities that have arrived vocally—nor clout (for I am in deficit of such)! Truly, it has been a ’’spirit of charity” that has motivated throngs to render acts and ac colade. I am deeply indebted to Shipmates, Associ ates in Ministry, Comrades in business, Organizational leaders— along with scores in the Social, Medical, and Judicial strata —for an end less dialogue and encourage ment toward tasks at hand. Thank you for lifting me when I shrunk from inabil ity, fatigue, or inattention. No individual is an island — and no one knows this better than 1.1 am a ’’Team person”— and I am continu ously aware of the merits of those on the ’’right and left”. Without God, and the vast party of highly respected per sons who contributed to the common cause of morality, stability and integrity — I would have been ’’out in the wind” long ago. If any progress has been made, it is because ’’you were there”. My blessings is extended to each one, and my prayers are that your Christmas will be the best ever.
