Thomas Jefferson THURSDAY JANUARY 14, 2021 Ours and Yours THE GEORGIA POST 4 Planting and care of fruit trees BY JEFF COOK It may not feel like it outside, but it is actually winter and now is the best time of year to plant fruit trees. It is also a good time to do that pruning that you have been putting off. Most fruit trees can be planted on about a 20 foot spacing. If you are wanting to plant pecans you may want to bump this up to 30 or 40 feet to handle the trees larger size at maturity. The biggest problem that I see with fruit trees, or any trees for that matter, is planting depth. Whether you are planting potted plants or bare root plants the rules are the same. The first few roots on the tree need to be at or above the soil line after planning. This will allow for some settling without putting the tree in the ground too far. Remember that roots can grow down, but they do not grow upward very well. The area around the tree should be soil sampled and lime should be applied well ahead of planting. Do not put any type of soil amendment or fertilizer in the hole with the tree at planting. If you have a really tall tree or one with a lot of limbs you may want to prune it back at planting, however most pruning can be done after the first growing season. Different fruit trees have different natural shapes and growth patterns, but the principles are basically the same. Prune low branches and branches that crowd the center of the tree. These branches hinder light penetration and air flow in the canopy. Make sure your main branches or scaf fold limbs have good angles which are not too sharp. Finally keep fruit trees cut back to a manageable size. Apples and Pears are no good to you if you cannot even reach them. I don’t know of many people that want to drag the ladder out in the summer to pick fruit. Fertilization can begin the second year of growth and should only be applied to get a little bit of growth. With fruit trees we want fruit not limbs, and leaves. Care of bearing trees is a topic for a whole other article, but you can come by our office and get some infor mation if you are interested. It’s not really about the election and certainly not about party affiliations, it’s a battle between good and evil and a battle for our country. There’s a spiritual battle going on in and around us, whether we can see it or not. Powers to be want us divided and many want civil war. There is so much anger and hateful people. Even people you would not think would be that way. It’s a heart condition, unrepen tant and hard heart. We just need to remember that God is in control and we are not to be afraid. Our lives are in His hands. That’s comforting to me. I’m sorry but Biden calling for unity after the fact and after so much vio lence these past few years, it’s hypo critical. When people called for unity earlier last year when all the riots were going on, it fell on deaf ears. So many things I just don’t under stand or don’t make sense. Like if there was no election fraud, why would anyone not let it be looked into. If you won, not finding any would legitimize the win. I’ve seen enough to cast doubt but so far even courts do not want to see the evidence which doesn’t make sense. Why impeach a president if you he lost and is leaving office in a few days. That certainly won’t bring unity either giving his widespread support. Why waste time and money on this non sense? Anyone who thinks censorship of anyone is okay, needs to go back and study what Hitler did and how it was done. Kind of eerie we see that repeat ing itself. It really is true if you don’t remember the past, you are condemned to repeat it. I see people post hateful things all the time, but I sup port their right to do so as given by the Constitution. I just keep scrolling and rarely engage unless it is just so ridiculous. Something in me thinks some thing I might respond could resonate but truthfully, it never does so I’m trying not to at all. You may think it okay now, but when they come for you because of something you said, believe me, you will feel differ ently. Don’t tell me the plat forms are private businesses and can do anything. Even private businesses can’t discriminate, yet here we are. If you want everyone who support ed one candidate or another removed and punished, again, you really don’t know what you are asking. How can you hate someone so much for really not reason, other than they supported a candidate you don’t like. Nonsensical to me. If you laugh about it, that definitely says something about the state of your heart. We have been fed so much propa ganda by mainstream media that we don’t know the truth and don’t try to do any research to find truth. If you have already got rid of them, good for you. It has become painfully obvious that President Trump has been right all along about Big Tech. They control our very lives and dictate to us what plat forms we can access. Why the liberals think this is okay or haven’t come out against censorship says a lot about the direction our country is heading. No matter whom you voted for, you should smell that something is definite ly not right. Of course, nothing that has gone on this past year even makes sense one little bit. I know some people think it was okay to cripple businesses by a lock down and put people out of work, but I don’t. It’s no wonder that there has been a mass exodus from the state of New York this past year. Most ever. I certainly wouldn’t want to live there but the problem with that is they some times bring the problems there with them. Looking from the outside seems to me that Cuomo wants to kill the elderly and all businesses. We are witnessing people calling other people selfish because they want everyone to comply with the govern ment and give in to things they do not believe in personally. It’s not selfish to take care of yourself and not want the government to tell you what to do. If you haven’t watched Braveheart lately, this might be a good time to be remind ed about freedom and its cost. It never has been free and we are as someone said, always just one generation away from losing it. So very true. Spend more time in prayer and com muning with God and don’t focus on the things going on around you. It will help your peace of mind immensely. If you want unity, then let it start with you and check your heart and what comes out of your mouth. That includes things you post on social media. Because God’s word tells us what comes out of our mouth shows the condition of our hearts. Count your blessings and you won’t have time for other nonsensical things. As we know keeping symp toms suppressed from COVID-19 helps keep us out of the emergency room and hospital. It also helps in keeping the symptoms subdued as our own im mune system is working at mapping the virus so it can produce antibodies that are perfectly designed to squash the invader. I wanted to further re search how these individual supplements and medi cations (mostly over the counter) work so as to not have multiple ones working in the same category. I found some interesting things such as research listed with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) when combining histamine 1 and histamine 2 blockers. Famotidine (in Pepcid/Pepcid AC) for blocking histamine 1 and Cetirizine (in Zyrtec) for histamine 2. This can help block the cytokine storm we all know that can lead to difficulty breathing, hospi talization, intubation and death. As a medical disclaimer: these are the products that I would use personally. The first ones are ones I would want to use to strengthen my system prior to get ting COVID-19 and then if getting COVID-19 there are some I would want to keep on hand to start taking so as to suppress the symptoms. Vitamin C: 1000 mg once or twice daily. Vitamin C helps reduce inflammation and many other benefits. Vitamin D: 2000 IU daily. Vitamin D can mod ulate the innate and adaptive immune responses. Defi ciency in vitamin D is associated with increased autoim munity as well as an increased suscepti bility to infection. Melatonin: 3 mg nightly. Melatonin has been shown to possess anti-in flammatory effects, among a number of actions. Melatonin reduces tissue destruction during inflammatory reac tions by a number of means. Zinc: too mg daily. Zinc lozenges preferred. Zinc is necessary for the activity of over 300 enzymes that aid in metabolism, digestion, nerve function and many other processes. In addition, it’s critical for the development and function of immune cells. Green Tea: The antiox idants in green tea have been found to block the various phases of infection of healthy cells, weakening a virus and reducing the duration of cold-like symp toms and fever. This may be because green tea’s anti oxidant polyphenols could affect regulatory T-cells that play a key role in immune function. Elderberry: seems to have benefit in decreasing pain and inflammation, and reduce symptoms of upper respiratory infections. Elder berry seems to boost cyto kine production- so I would take as a prevention to wake up immune system but not take it if I had COVID-19. Using Elderberry in combination with Vitamin D and Vitamin C can work great as a prevention measure to knock out bad stuff as it comes in (I would lay-off the Elderberry espe cially if lung issues start but continue with Vitamins C & D). Just my opinion: I would use Elderberry at a separate meal since it boosts immune system activity. Aspirin: I would use up to max dosage depending on symptoms. Aspirin helps control inflammation, pain and helps guard against blood clots (as an anticoag ulant). NSAIDs Ibuprofen (Advil), naprox en (Aleve), and aspirin: are all part of a class of medi cations called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. They treat aches by reducing inflammation (which can be anything from heat, fever, swelling, pain or losing movement). Ibuprofen is what I would use at night as it seems to help me sleep better. Famotidine: (Pepcid, Pepcid AC 20 mg daily). This inhibits histamine 2 release. Has been shown to work well with Cetirizine. PMC7455799 Cetirizine: (Zyrtec) se lectively inhibits periph eral histamine 1 and has been shown to work ef fectively with famotidine. PMC7455799 Mucinex: 400 mg three times daily. Mucinex is an expectorant that helps to loosen and thin congestion in your chest and throat. When mucus is thick and sticking stubbornly to the walls of your lungs and throat, it’s difficult to cough it up, so Mucinex works by loosening and thinning the mucus in your chest. Inhaler (if symptoms wors en). Symbicort or Albuterol. My preference is Symbicort. Symbicort contains a com bination of budesonide and formoterol. Budesonide is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation in the body. Formoterol is a long-acting bronchodilator that relaxes muscles in the airways to improve breathing. Stay hydrated and get plen ty of rest but also try to stay moving as much as possible. When you have lung conges tion it is best to lay on side or stomach to take pressure off the lungs. I hope and will be praying not that you, your family and friends will not get COVID-19 but that you can suppress the symptoms of it and power through it.
