Officer’s
name
released
in shooting
After last week’s story con
cerning the officer involved
shooting on January g, was
printed, the deputy’s name
was released the following
day.
The officer involved in the
shooting of Denrick Stallings,
is William Owenby. According
to Crawford County Sher
iff Lewis Walker, Deputy
Owenby has been placed on
administrative leave pending
the outcome of the investiga
tion by the Georgia Bureau of
Investigation and review by
the Macon Judicial Circuit.
Owenby was previously
cleared after a domestic
violence call where Jamie
Darley allegedly fired shots
at deputies and threatened to
kill his family members before
leading deputies on a high
speed chase. At the end of the
chase, Darley was running
toward his family with a gun
and firing at deputies before
he was fatally shot. The shoot
ing was ruled justified.
According to the GBI,
Owenby was trying to pull
over Stallings for speeding; a
chase occurred and Stallings
crashed his car, leading to a
foot chase. GBI says Owenby
tased Stallings, causing him to
hit the ground. A struggle oc
curred when the deputy tried
to put Stallings under arrest
and Stallings tried to grab the
deputy’s gun.
The deputy fired the gun,
fatally hitting the 47-year-old
Stallings.
In spite of his previous arrest
record, some of the Stallings
family has said they do not be
lieve the preliminary findings;
mentioning he was honorably
discharged from the Marines
and that he attended church.
They posted he was buried
with full military honors.
The GBI is continuing the
investigation and their find
ings will be turned over to the
district attorney’s office once
completed.
Press conference
was held Tuesday
The District Attorney’s
Office and GBI held a press
conference at the Craw
ford County Courthouse
to update the course of the
investigation.
No new information on the
investigation was given at
the press conference. Dis
trict Attorney Anita Howard
stated her office will not do
anything to jeopardize the
investigation and “have to
follow the evidence.”
Jerry Jones, GBI Special
Agent in Charge stated they
are still collecting evidence
and information from wit
nesses.
Questions were asked by
Denrick Stallings’ father and
mother on specific details
of the case in which Jones
stated he would get with the
family to give what informa
tion he can.
Since this in an ongoing in
vestigation, the GBI and Dis
trict Attorney’s Office cannot
give pertinent information to
jeopardize the investigation.
