Collection Laws.
There is a screw loose somewhere
in the collection laws of Georgia.
There is an inconsistency that is not
fair and the sooner the defect is
remedied the better for all concerned.
If a court issues a judgment ar.d
the man the juilgment is against has
thu money in his pocket the court is
powerless. The man snaps His fin
ger in the face of the judge.
Hut if tho sumc man is put in tho
hands of a receiver and even sup-
^posed to have the money and refuses
or is unable to give it np he can lie
sent to jail indefinitely. Only cer
tain classes of debtors can be put in
the hands of receivers, so the harsh
measure of - imprisonment cannot
roaoh them at all.
Dut even as to this imprisonment
' of debtors who fail or refuse to turn
over cash there is a difference of
opinion. A day or two ago .fudge
Miller, of Bibb county, refused,to
send a debtor to jail, remarking that
he could not agree with Judge ('larko
on this jioint, and knew no law to
imprison a man for refusing to turn
oyer assents which he claimed not to
have.

Tlie Country Bov.
Tlie strongest and most vital ele
ment in the progress of this nge Is
the country lx>y. Tho form raised,
the form trained lwy.
Tho farm bred, boy is the future
hopo of the country. Ho is tlie sus
taining foundation of our prosperity.
It is often interesting to note tho
large number of successful men in
every calling who have commenced
lifo on*the farm. Such men are
found in every community. They
are identified with tlie best interests
of their localities, and are tho suc
cessful leaders of public enterprise.
Tho country boy is a dynamic
force within himself. Tho circum
stances of rural life give him a strong
body and healthy mind. A sense of
personal independence Is developed
and a lofty ambition inspired, and
tho country boy enters tho piny on
the world’s stage with a positive in
dividuality his eity cousin docs not
possoss.
The country bey often clinfea in
disappointment under tlie restraints
of the farm to his ambition, bnt soon
er or later tho opportunity comes
and there is nothing for him to do
but to appropriate it to his advantage.
The freedom of country childhood
offers opportunities for tho founda
tions of tlie character and endurance
which the eity does not
The country boy is a mature man
and liis habits are fixed before ho
encounters tlie life of the eity. He
works because lie is accnstomod to it,
he save his money because he has no
extravagant habits, he succeeds be
cause lie is ambitious and wants suc
cess. He is a lender in commerce,
in tlie professions, and in everything
lie touches.
Tho hopo of tlie nation is the
country hoy.—Home Tribune.
There is no danger from whooping
cough when Chamberlain's Cough Rem

tough, tenacious mucus and aids In Its
expectoration. It also lessens the sever

Pine Condition of Southwest
Georgia.
Captain W. W. Dews, of Cutlibcrt,
who inspects fertilizers in that dis
trict, paid a visit to the agricultural
department yesterday, and gave an
encouraging account of the condition
of the farrnors of soutliwuHt Georgia.
“Tlie farmers in our part of the
state are in a much better condition
than you hear they are,"said he. “In
Thomas, Brooks and Lowndes ijt is a
common tiling to see a wagon-load
of home-raised bacon. Farmers who
have raised their own supplies are in
easy circumstances. They have
enough to live on comfortably, and
the low price of cotton merely cuts
off i part of their surplus. For this
reason they are starting off well with
this year’s operations. In southwest
Georgia they mako more corn and
meat, and use less fertilizer.
“Brooks county is in a very fine
condition. The farmers there arc
25 per eent. better off than they arc
in any other county. There was not
a day while I was at Quitman that
less than two thousand pounds of
country meat was sold. One man
sold 10,0U0 pounds. At Quitman
you can't buy a pound of western
lard. When the new lard jaw oamo
in somebody went around town and
found 1,500 gallons were still on
hand from last year. The farmers
there arc shipping corn away at 05
cents a bushel in sacks. Mr. McCall
and Mr. Denmark, both tankers,
told me that the farmers of that
county have *140,000 to tlicir credit
in bank at Quitman.
“Calhoun, Dougherty and Baker
counties, and a portion of Karly, arc
doing little, because tho white people
have moved ont and left the negroes,
bnt Thoms*, Deoa(:ir,'Brooks, Mitch
ell, Lowndes, Colquitt and Berrien
are ai! doing well. Bandolph is
making its own corn."
The annual convention of tho 27th
District Sunday School Association,
will be held in the eity of Waycross
on Saturday and Sunday, April 10
and 17. Tho district is composed of
tho counties of Lowndes, Berrien,
Coffee, Charlton, Clinch, Echols,
Pierce and Ware, and the mcmlien
of the schools in the association is
over 0,000.
The officers and executive commit
tee are doing all in their power to
make the convention a grand success.
Among the prominent Sunday-school
workers from abroad, who will partici
pate In the exercises, arc Governor
Northen, H. B. Bcppard of Savannah,
J. W. Whcatiey and Lott Warren of
Ameriuua, H.D.Clanoyof Maeon. Wo
