Woo.ten’H Speech.
The address of the Hon. (! B.
Wooten at Borrion superior court
last week was a masterly and elo
quent exposition of tiue democratic
doctrine and party policy, as it now
and has ever been presented to the
American people. There are two
things his opponents cannot charge
to bis account, tha|) he minces words
or fails to call things by their proper
names.
llo acknowledged and spoke very
feelingly of the untoward condition
of the masses of American farmers,
there Is a feeling of unrest and di*
satisfaction among this class of our
countrymen that is calling loudly
for relief, und lie insisted thut their
relief could only come through the
domiiiunoyof the demooratio party
—the party “of tho people, by the
people and for tho people.”
He animadverted severely upon
tho folly of southern white people
leaving the time honored demooratio
party which has over responded to
the call of the people for relief when
it was in a condition to' aid thorn—
illustrating the point by a reference
to the promptiicsa with Which that
party gathered up the reins of gov
ernment in Ooorgiu after reconstruc
tion und brought order out of oiiaos
—und fol lowing after the ignis faiuut
labeled third or people's party.
As a means of relief to this op
pressed class of our people he offered
an antidote with (Ivo ingredients:
First, a reformation of tho tariff
from a protective to a revonuo basis;
second, u graduated tax on incomes;
third, free silver coinage; fourth,
ubolitlou of the national bunking
system; fifth, governmental control
of railroads, He argued very logic
ally tout this relief, or any other
Hint might Ini suggested, could not
Ih> secured at one “foil swoop” but
gradually. He earnestly believes
with these measures of rcliof in full
force, toguthcr witli tlie abolition of
ten per cunt- tax on state banks, that
tlie doubtful, impmotioul and ex
treme sub-treasury policy would
plainly appear to be unnecessary.
File Gakktth approves tho course
marked out for the relief of our op
pressed pmiplo by Mr. Wooten he
cause tiiey are Bound dcmocrutio doc
trines. TI10 people should not in
tliulr desperation grow rudioul in
their viows or seek rush or doubtful
remedies, fait conservatism be the
ruling passion of the hour; seek tlie
needed relief gradually until it is
found.
He referred to the Ciythbcrt con
ference with a spirit, of liberality.
Ho insisted, however, ua the Gazette
did last week, if tlie alliance intend
ed thereby to gain advanced or van
tage ground in tlie donmcmtio con-
gressoiinl convention it lias signally
failed mid no other result could have
been expected. Wliilo it may bo true
thut tlie delegates to the conference
met ua democrats it was an unusual
mid doubtful proceeding, without a
precedent In demooratio history; it
was radically wrong and tending
only to tlm disruption of tho dumo-
oratlo party.
.Mr. Wooten insisted, also, that
the methods by which Mr. 0. B.
Stevens was placed boforo tbs peoplo
as a congressional candidate were
undomoorutio uml wrong.
Tho address was listened to
throughout with dose attention, and
wo think it will result in good to the
party in tho oounty.
