Interest on the bonds of the Genr

paid yesterday. The amount due
was 8100,01)0, of which 816,000 was
paid to bondholders in 31,neon. This
tis certainly a satisfactory stale of af
fairs, We are assured that this in
terost has licon paid from the actual
earnings of the road. The outlook
for this enterprise brightens as the
weeks pass away. The business

tinder the management of Receiver

ingty watchful of its every interest,
and ho has not allowed the road to
suffer in any way. . Remarkable suc
cess lias attended bis efforts. While
other roads have been suspending
workmen and stopping trains the
Georgia Southern has proceeded
quietly along to increase its force of
employees and the number of
trains. There has been no idling at
the shops of the Georgia Southern.
Trains have not, been held up in the
yards waiting fov freight, and cm
ployes have not been clamoring for
their well earned, but long delayed
wages. The omens seem favorable

The Kitchen Garden.
Few people realize how great an
amount of vegetables can ho pro
duced in a small hut well kept gar
den. In the saving of dollars and
cents in the household expenses, we
have ft strong Incentive, while the
enjhyment of seeing and profiting,
directly and indirectly by our labor,
is uo small consideration.
Many gardens fail to mako a satis
factory return, principally for lack of
necdod attention and cultivation.
Good seed should he used and
sowing dono from time to time in or
der to have a succession of crops.
While most people understand the
necessity of keeping the garden clear
of weeds and grass many fail to ap
preciate the fact that frequent work
ing and Stirl ing of the soil to prevent
formation of crust is very important.
When soil is thus kept loose plants
grow much better and arc able to
withstand considerable drouth with
out injury. The garden work needs
to he distiibuted through the entire
season, as the preparation of soil and
planting is only the initial step. The
selection of varieties and relative
quantities grown will he a matter of
judgment and preference on tho part
of the moving spirit, (fare should
he exercised in selecting the choice
varieties of any vegetable, while the
canning ami drying of surplus prod
ucts for winter use, should always be
borne in mind
Have a garden and have a good
one. Have it every year and all the
yoar. Then if you take the pains to
hoc how much the garden produces
and estimate its value in dollars and
cents you will be surprised and
pleased. It will then be a good time
to start a fruit garden, which, with
care and patience, will give you a
double surprise, and much pleasure
ns well. Try it, try hard, try often
and keep trying and success, profit
and pleasure will reward your ef

The permanent success of the
Georgia Chautauqua is now assured.
The present assembly fias even put a
quietus on the chronic croakers,' and
all are compelled to admit that Chau
tauqua is not anly a good thing, but
a big thing. The people are begin
ning to appreciate the institution,
and the assembly's are drawing more
good people to Albany each year.
Those who have come here from the
north this year and have been attend
ing Chautauquas, and some of them
actively engaged ' in Chautauqua
work in different parts of the coun
try, all assure us that the Georgia
Chautauqua has surpassed all south
ern Chautauquas, and now stands
second only to the parent Chantau
qua of New York. The success of
the present assembly has more than
mot the expectations of the strongest
friends of the institution, and Juts
