DIRECT TRADE M 3.
THE TIME, THE SOUTH,AND EU
ROPE READY FOR IT.

Foreign Landa—TJ** Jlwnl nml Demand
. of th«> South, ,
The great subject of direct trade
for tbe south with foreign countries
is ^renting a deep and widespread
interest. ’
Tho movement is] meeting with a
strong a»d universal endorsement.
The necessity and benefit are fully
realized, and all are eager for and
ready to unite in trying to get it.
Success involves a candid dismis
sion of tho difficulties in the way, and
tho means and prospects of over
coming them. m \
Wh will for tho present look at
the trials that have been made since
the war, as based upon the new con
ditions wrought by that great strug
gle with its colossal and revolt, tion-
■ary results.
In 1871 the Brunswick and Alba-
tny railroad arranged for a line of
steamships from Liverpool to Bruns
wick, but the collapse of tlmt railway
enterprise and the control of the con
necting road from Brunswick to the
west by a rival line broke up tbe
scheme. That cause of failure is not
likely now.
A lino was starte 1 between Virginia
and Europe later, buF* it could only
get exports during the cotton season,
and while there was enough imports
for tho Ijne, there

A Living Creed.
Do not keep tho alabaster boxes of
your love and tenderness, sealed up
until .your friends are dead. Fill
their lives with sweetness. .Speak ap
proving, cheering words while their
cars can hear them, ami while 1 their
hearts can be thrilled and inada hap
pier by them; tho kind things you
mean to say wheu they arc gone Bay
before they go. The flowers you
mean to send for their coffin send to
brighten and sweeten their homes
before they go. If my friends have
alabaster boxes laid away, full of fra
grant perfumes of sympathy and af
fection, which they intend to break
over my dead body, I would rather
they would bring, them out in my
wear}’ and troubled hours, and open
them, that I may he refreshed and
cheered by them while I need them.
I w^Id rather have a plain coffin
without a (lower, a funeral without a
eulogy,'titan a life without the sweet
ness of love and sympathy. Let us
learn to anoint our friends before
hand for their burial. Post mortem
kindness does not cheer the troubled
spirit. Flowers on the coffin easts
no fragrance backward over a life’s
weary way,—AV. P. Lovett.

Fur in Gardens,
Tho garden oh tho farm is one of its
most iniportantadjuncts, for it, can lie
made to largely supply the wants of
the table. In this climate, by proper
care, there is not a month in the
year that something for the table
cannot be taken out of tbe garden.
Yet there arc few farmers who pay
any attention to the garden farther
than to plant a few, ions of peas and
potatoes in the spring, which yielded
blew messes, and then the garden
looks as barren as an old Hold tho
remainder of the year. AVith a little
care and labor the garden ban be
made to almost entirely supply tile
family with the most healthful food
the year round. Teach the children
to take an interest in the garden.
Give each of them a particular patch
to attend to, and they will soon love
•the work, and in time will take en
tire charge of it.

Don’t Forget Box Keys.
Postmaster General lA’anamaker
has made a ruling about the delivery
of mail from lock boxes which will
bo of interest to many. The ruling
is as follows’ “A postmaster should,
in a spirit of accommodation, deliver
letters from lock boxes to the owner
thereof when such owners have for
gotten to bring their keys, He is not
justifiable in delivering mail from a
look box to any person other than
tbe owner unless lie be presented
with a written order therefor. If
the owner of a lock box desires some
one else to take tho mail from the
box he should provide him with a
key thereto,”
