GIDEON’S BAND.
A SECRET BODY WITHIN THE FAR
MERS* ALLIANCE,
-:
Limited to Thirty In Karh County to
Manipulate Ita 1*0)1 tie* and to Force
the Allloncemen tlielr Way.
Lavonu, Ga., May 26.—A speech
delivered here hy Rev. J. T. W. Ver
non, president of the Hart eounty al
liance, has created a sensation.
It exposed a socret political agen
cy in the farmers’.alliance.
It was at a joint debate between
democrats and third party people.
Mr. Vernon ia a prominent Bap
tist minister of Hart county. There
is no man moro universally respected
and beloved. As president of the
Hart county alliance lie was a dele
gate to the stato convention of the
alliance which met in Atlanta last
August.
Mr. Vernon opened his spcecii as
follows;
“Democrats and Fellow Citizens-r-
I come to-night to tell of the goose
that laid the egg that hatched the
third party. Most eggs arc hatched
1n about four weeks, but it required
six months to hatch the third party
egg.”
Just here there wns great restless
ness. This anxiety was happily re
lieved by tile sequel to Mr. Vernon’s
speech.
Mr. Vernon continued suhstantial-
^ ly as ■follows: “I was a delegate to
the state convention of the alliance
which met in Atlanta last August.
At that meeting a secret body, with
in the alliance, itself a secret body,
was organized under the name of
‘Gideon’s Band.’ Only thirty inem-
1|jra are allowed in this from each
county in the state. The initiation
fee is $2. I hesitated about joining
the band, not knowing its purposes.
But the lenders insisted and finally
proposed as I was a minister of the
gospel to initiate me free. I inquired
if it would interfere with my religion
or politics, and was answered in the
negative.” Here the speaker paused
a moment and looking straight at T.
A. McFarland, of this county, said:
‘“Yon and 1 went in together, didn’t
wc, Brother McFarland?” Brother
McFarland didn’t reply but hung his
head in shame. “Arid,” continued
: the speaker, “what did wo .find when
wa were’sworn Into ‘Gideon’s Band?'
That we were to bring into the band
thirty men from our respective conn
ties, who were to manipulate the pol
ities of the alliance. These thirty
men were to control the offices, force
’the members of tho alliance to vote
for the men named by them. Isn't
» this true, Brother McFarland, and
didn’t you, when you visited my
•county last fall, inquire of me how I
was getting along with the work of
•organizing ‘Gideon’s Band,’ and
didn’t I tell yon that I could have
nothing to do with it, as it was in
consistent with the original principles
of the Alliance, which promised ‘equal
justice to alt special favors to none?’
Bo fair, Brother McFarland, and tell
me if this is not true?” But Brother
McFarland was dumb. The speaker
continued: “You remember the sign
• of the brotherhood, Brother McFar
land. If a member of ‘Gideon’s
Band’ dosired to make himself known
he lolled his tongue, and if his broth
er happened to bo one of the elect,
he recognized the sign and lolled his
tongue also. Isn’t this true, Brother
->— McFarland?” For tho third timo
" that evening Brother McFarland was
•dumb.
Mr. McFarland may cry “false
hood” to tho story of “Gideon’s
Band,” but ho did not dare to do
at Lavonia. He spoke after Mr. Vor-
non, but “Gideon’s Band" was not
mentioned. If Mr. Vernon’s account
of “Gideon’s Band” was not, true,
why did McFarland not rise up in
the presence as an honest man and
d-?ny it.
Mr. Vernon stated further that an
alliance leader from Atlanta was sent
to hi* house last fall to observe tho
yjrogicse he was making w ith “Gid
eon’s band.” Mr. Vernon informed
him that he could have not!ling to do
with such dirty work and washed his
hands of the whole business. Tho
liitisucenjan from Atlanta scoured
tnd in Hart county and found
other man whom he initiated into
hand, but happened to be a man
o Influence in Hart county, and
lance the third party bar
£$"
non said, “Gideon’s Band is-the goose
that laid the egg that hatched the
third party."
Nearly two hundred of the best
men in Franklin county heard Mr.
Vernon’s speech and arc ready to
give affidavits to the truthfulness of
this report. The Gideonites may ory
campaign story, but fair-minded men
will not heed them. They may
say that Mr. Vernon has misrepre
sented, but they will not dare to say
it anywhere on the soil pf Hart coun
ty. Mr. Vernon is a ntan whose
honesty is unquestioned and whose
life has been blameless.

Tho writer takes this method of
announcing to the people of Worth
county that lie is a candidate for con
gress in tho Third party nomination.
My reasons for leaving tho old
Democratic party are that it has al
ways schemed and tried to give every
body an equal showing, by which
those who worked have got richer
and those who spent have got poorer,
and tho longest poles have knocked
off all tho persimmons. I now pro
pose to give the short polos a chance.
I believe tiiat Wall street is able
to feed the balance of the country
and should be made to do it. The
foolish system of every man having
what he has earned and saved lias
become obsolete and should be abol
ished.
I believe in creating new parties
and government offices until every
man in tho country, who is too lazy
to do anything clso, can become an
officeholder and collect the money
from Wall street to fly high on.
I believe every freeholder in the
country should be made to divide his
land with tlie first poor Godforsaken
tramp that comes along until we all
become freeholders or tramps to
gether.
I believe every Union soldier ought,
to be pensioned until he is able to
live without work, and tho Confeder
ate soldier he made to feed him.
I believe the women should ho al
lowed to vote. They govern the
country now, and they ought to have
the credit of it.
The first thing I do when I get
to congress will he to pass a hill mak
ing cotton worth 26 cents per pound.
Next, a hill giving every man as
ranch money as lie wants, and if the
government hasn’t enough money for
that let them make enough paper
money to do it.
Then, a bill compelling the govern
ment to loan every man us much
money as he wants at 2 per cent.,and
to raise this money by taxing tho peo
ple until they have to borrow it at
1(1 per cent, to pay the taxes with,
I will establish n custom-house and
sub-treasury in every inland county
in tho State until I get enongh voters
in office to carry the elections for my
side.
I believe tho government ought to
own all means of transportation, in
eluding horses, mules, oxen and asses
—in office and out—and be compel!
ed to feed them am! let every man
ride that wants to.
I propose to build Sylvester an
union passenger depot.
I propose to pass a law making
due-hills legal tender, and when
man gets out more than he can pay,
will pass a stay law to keep every
body from collecting them.
I propose to place the Worth coun
ty court house on wheel* and move
it around from place to place until
every little town in tho county is sat
isfied.
I can think of nothing olse to
promise just now, but if there is any
thing else you want done, 1 am ready
fur it and f propose to promise any
thing that is likely to living in a vote.
