TOBACCO. '
.A DAY WITH THE'GROWERS .OF
THE WEED.
Iii 8i»«nt Very nriiratly At Cyclnnelo,
Tifton and Other Point* on the Lluc of *
the G, tL ft F.
Yuur correspondent Las frequently
, remarkedupon the excellency of the
Georgia Southern and Fiorida'rail-
road, which extends from Macon,
Ga., to P&latka, Fla.,—ilSfi miles—
and he has no reason for retraction,
but. abundant renson for adding em
phasis to the'remark.
In the first place it is well officered
—being managed and run by compe
tent, intelligent, kind, big-hcarled
gentlemen—tlich it is ono of the liest
road beds in the stato and it is well
furnished and equipped, and then
again it pon|trates and opens up one
of the heat farming sections of Geor
gia.
It was the writer's pleasure on last
Saturday to enjoy the kindness of
the clever and accommodating man
ager, Col. Jeff Lane, who so gonor-
-ously planned and successfully di
rected the exdirsion from Macon lo
Tlfton, 105 miles.
' A party of hundred and seventy
men, unqpr the'management of Col.
Lane, took a irce ride down tbe road
to visit, the tobacco farms along the
**Tino of travel. All these pine lands
along the road furnish fine timber,
supplying the many first-class saw
mills to be seen at frequent stations
mi the route. Nor is this timber the
only source of revenue (o these peo
ple. These lands, after the timber
Jins been utilized for turpentine and
lumber, are well adapted to the
growth of all crops, especially tho
cereals .and tobacco.
Our'party went down especially to
inspect the tobacco experiments
which arc being made in that section
of tbc state. At Cvcloiieta we made
our first, atop. Here we found a to
bacco field iif some twenty acres,
which was indeed a revelation to
every man of us. There are on tin-
farm three varieties of tjic weed, the
CltlKti, the Goueh and the Hester.
The first grown for cigars, flic two
■ others for chewing purposes. Thu
xveU niisted and gentfeiliftflly Ugifiag-
x- TTof this-fatmj,Sujt-Ptagjiai, of North
Carolina, iitfarmed Ms tliat the yield
of tobacco <)ty-;- $dn> farin would be
from <>00 to l',mi(V paifnnk per acre,
which at an average price of twenty
cents per pound, is something ahead
of cotton, putting it even at ten rents
per pnutpl.
Hut (his Cycloncta farm is not
limited in tho production of any one
crop, for we were shown by tbe kind
mid affable Mr. Irby a variety of
crops, corn, cane, peas and melons,
with every variety of garden truck
besides the live stock, horses, mules,
cows and hogs. Indeed, everything
that is raised in this country is found
on this farm.
It is an assured success. Tobacco
can and will be raise in this section
as successfully as in any portion of
the south.
After regaling onrselves on the
luscious Georgia melons, we dropped
<To5Cfi (to-within a mild or two of Tif-
ton, here we had the pleasure of in
specting two other fields owned by
the Tift brothers. This was a fine
show of the weed, bettor Imre than
that already seen, and the grapes on
this farm arc simply fine—can’t stop
now to describe them, ns we arc
mainly after tobacco on this trip.
»... Rolling into the pretty little city
of Tifton, whoso mayor is the clever
big-hearted W. II. Love, we wore
directed to tho “cream of the tobac
co fields.” Here we found a teij-aord
lot that, will average five foci high
and will yield l,i>00 pounds per aero.
This was t he estimate of experienced
ir.pn. Now at thirty cents per pound,
which tho owner expects to get, you
can see what there is in it.
Success to Tifton and. her enter
prising citizen*, also to Cvcloneta and
her'clever managers.
Ix-ng live the G. S. A. F„ and may
| the shadows of Col. Lane and 'the
Tobacco Culture Illustrated.
A special train of three coaches
an|d a baggage car left Maron last
Saturday on the Georgia Southern
and Florida railroad. Manager Lane
had previously issued invitations to
prominent furmers along the line to
join in a free excursion to Cycloncta
and Tifton. The train stopped at
every station, and before the experi
ment farm was reached, there were
fully two hundred interested farmers
on hoard from Bibb, Houston and
Dooly counties; a few from -Worth
and Irwin.
To many t?io broad expanse of
wire gra-s, pine trees, saw mills, tur
pentine stills, new towns, etc., was a
revelation, but the Cycloncta experi
ment farm filled with surprise all who
had not seen it. Here tho G. S. &
F. company owns 1,000 acres of land
with about 500 under fence and cul
tivated in corn, cotton, fruit trees,
vineyard, vegetables, tobacco, etc.,
with a tip-top stock farm attachment.
The- tobacco farm was the chief
point of attraction, and the expert
superintendent was kept busy show
ing the crop and answering the in
numerable questions concerning its
preparation, planting, cultivation,,
method of curing, probable product,
and price to be realized. The ‘JO
acres devoted to tobacco bold a
splendid crop, and it already demon
strates that tobacco can be made onr
of the leading money crops in Geor
gia.
Tbe stock farm demonstrates that
there is no need for Georgia farmers
to buy horses and mules from other
states, as they can raise them profita
bly at. home. In fact the Cycloncta
farm has shown the people of wire-
grass Georgia that their lands aro
valuable for farming purposes.
Just, before reaching Tifton the to
bacco farm and vineyard of II. !!.
and \V. O. Tift was inspected, and
another illustration that this country
will produce well was presented.
Here the tobacco was from three to
live feet high, both cigar and plug
loaf. At Tifton the largest tobaeto
seen was shown—ten acres from fiv e
t-> seven feet high, with leaves 'J8
inches long and 18 inches wide. It is
Cntimate'd that, this ten acres will
yield an average of 1,500 pounds per
acre of cured tobacco.
The entire crop at the two farms
inspCCt-id, ahoul 75 acres, will yield,
it is said, an average of about 800
pounds per aero, or more, and that
the market price will be about JO
cents per pound.
The people aro enthused over the
subject, and tobacco is destined to
be tbe chief crop in that section of
country. Tho cost of cultivation
does not exceed tiiat of cotton, even
including the expensive barns, in
which tobacco will be cured by steam
process. The harvest will soon be
gin.
At Tifton the baskets wore brought
forth, and on the depot platform a
splendid dinner was enjoyed by one
of the hungriest crowds of men this
writer ever saw.
Tho return trip was commenced at.
about 4;l!0 p. m- and hy nine o'clock
ail the excursionists were at, home,
having enjoyed a most pleasant and
profitable day.
The trip illustrated more clearly
than anything else that the manage
ment of the Georgia Southern ami
Florida is in thorough sympathy with
the people, whose general interests
always receive careful attention.
This fact is developing a section
that heretofore lias ranked low ag
riculturally, and the entire stato will be
hcnelittod.—Houston Home Journal.

could.
In the “Wee sma” hours of the
night while dreaming of borne ami

orders him to give tbe' baby some
soothing syrup. He dishes out pat a
gorie in a doubt' dose and holds any
thing but a prayer meeting or an an
nual conference with his affectionate
wife from then until day light.
lie goes on a fishing froiie and
carries his little hoy along lo hold
the bait. His pockets are loaded
with the necessary bottle of luok, but
lie catches nothing because tho trees
are not largo enough for him to get
the luok out of his bottle without his

He sallies forth to go on an excur

and handsome following, lie kiss-

A special occasion brings him to
the front as marshal of the day and
he goeth forth on a prancing steed to
ride at the bead of the column while
a brass hand sends forth inspiring
strains to tho flutters of his long red

throws him into a mud hole just, be

and lie straightway announces him

people’s party platform with tho in

dollars in Albany in loss than six-
months. Ho realizes that be hasn’t
thirty cents and goes down in the
whirlpool of popular condemnation.
Ho is elected deacon in the church
and three days afterwards has to dig
potatoes for a whole day in the gar

red face and bloated nose, lie chews
cloves for a week and passes around
the hat the next -Sunday but is over
whelmed with blushes as he stumbles
in a torn place in the church carpet.
Ho braces up and tries to set a good
example to the community but is
finally led astray by being induced to

plays Montezuma. Ho goes homo
to the bosom of his family and, is at
once encountered by his young hope

red top hoots. At. once lie has a fit
of hysterics. He makes a sight draft
on a debtor to recover his lost finan

suicide and buys a .'18.calibre pistol
