Froin what people living in the
country say quail are unusually plen
ttful this season in the neighborhood
of Albany. Last year they wore not
shut a great deni and enough were
left over to raise a plentiful stock
during the summer, and tho shooting
this fall and winter promises to be
. unusually lino. The season opens on
October 1, or in three weeks, and
hundreds of quail will fall victims ti
the s^ill of Albany’s Nimrods before
they are again protected by thuadvent
of April 1st.

Nows was received of the burning
of tho Normandnle saw-mill, which
was probably the largest saw-mill on
tho line of tho Hast Tennessee,
Virginia and Georgia railroad. Tito
null was owned by tho Dodges and
was said to be valued at several
hundred thousands dollars. Tito
capacity* of the mill was ten ears of
lumber a day, for which it was neces
sary to employ over 800 hands, all of
whom are thrown out of employment.
The amount of insurance could not
be learned from the meager report
received in Macon, but it is known
that the insurance companies had
placed at tho mill a plant costing
410,000 for the protection of the
property. The origin of the fire is
not yet known.

The Bye Was Too High.
A farmer priced rye at a store in
Buena Vista the other day, and lie
was told it was worth 42.60 per
bushel.
: The farmer bristled up and ex-
aimed, “How can we farmers live
tint pay Bitch prices as that!”
This as a pretty good object les
son to illustrate the present condi
tion of tile agricultural class. In
stead of tho farmer grumbling at
the high price of rye, lie" ought to
have been glad and had some on
hand for sale at flint pride; That is
thu trouble now, tho farmers buy too
miny things they could have raised
at home, not only for their own use
ait for tiio market.
Land that would take three acres
i o make a bale of cotton ought at
least to make twenty-five bushels of
ye, which would realize 492.50 at
2-20 per bushel. This is double
■what is would mako in cotton and
at one tenth tho cost.
Tito farmer ought not to grumble
it the high price of bis own pro
ducts.—l’atriot.
GEORGIA SELLING HAY.
May lie tli« Slnto In Going to Join tho
FnrmoTH* Alllnm:c.
Atlanta, Hept. 9—The great state
of Georgia appears to have embarked
in the hay business. Somotimo ago
ihe newly sodded grounds about the
capitol building began to bear a fine
crop of grass. At the proper time it
was out and hauled away by the state
house officials, who happened to ltavo
horses or cows with appetites for hay.
Among others, Governor Northen
bad several Joads of the hay sent to
the executive barn for the executive
cow. All this was very well, and
while it is not so'far recorded on the
books of tiie keeper of state archives,
it is understood that the animals that
were lucky enough to feed off tho
grass cut from about the great state
capitol waxed exceedingly pompous.
But soveral days ago a bomb shell
was thrown into tho midst of tito un
suspecting officials who itad fed their
stock on tho state’s hay. This
week a second crop of hay was- out
on Lite capital pasture.
After it itad been raked up into
graceful stacks the'selfsame officials
renewed their orders for hay at tho
state crib, agreeing as they had be
fore to haul it off at their own ex
pense. But the demand for that hay
had suddenly give it a market value
and Col. Kell, keeper of public build
ings and grounds, informed the apjili
cants that they would have to pay
the market price if they expected to
continue to feed their kino on state
hay. The officials kicked but private
citizens readily relieved the keeper
of public buildings and grounds of
bis stock of hay at the market [trice,
and now the great state of Georgia
is some dollars richer by reason of
Col. Kell’s economy, and a new
source of income has been established
to delight the minds of future legs
lators.
