the great ocean of eternity —To he
boid the stern hand of death barring
up the gates and avenues of life, and
shutting out from them every possible
enjoyment, and driving them in upon
the untried solitude of an uttexpl >r
ed region.—To witness the faint
struggles with whi< h they cling to
the last fabre of being, is a scene
the memory of which no feeling heart
can ever shake off.
Our dying friends, while their
hands are cold and withering in death,
have strength enough to tear from ijs
the plumes of vanity, and cast them
in the dust. How do their last
groans rebuke our pride, and shame
our animosity! How do they confound
our envy and refute the idle speru
lations of adventurous reason! The
softest music creates disgust in our
minds when pressed down and dis
pirited by the loss of those whom we
love.
Dying friends breathe an admoni
tion to us in reference to living
friends. They seem to say, “Be
more faithful. D not so often plant
in their bosoms the pang of ingrati
tude. Towards them restrain your
obliquities of temper. Live more
humbly, and less offensively.”
Dying friends leave us with a cloud
of sorrow resting upon us; but it is a
eloud which presents a salutary shade
and damps the ardour of vain imagi
nations —a cloud which mitigates the
intense light that would .otherwise
dazzle us, and which allows us to
contemplate surrounding objects in
tin sober hue ofreality. They clothe
the heavens with darkness, and the
earth with sai kclotli, but they teach
us at the same time how to die.

No. 1.
Mr. Editor,
I observed an article in the Chris
tian Advocate and Journal, No. 89,
in commendation of a Tennessee Phy
sician, who had contributed to some
favorite Institution of the times, the
sum of one hundred dollars ; which
he states to be the savings of fifteen
years Sunday practice. I feel no dis
position to impugn,or call in question,
the motives which led the Doctor to
this act of benevolence, and hope tha*
be was actuated by the same liberal,
humane and consciencious .feeling in
making out the hills of his Sunday
Practice, that he was in his donation.
Here. I offer a quotation from that ai- i
ti-I**, with the privilege of adding a
few lines.
a Oh what a vast amount of pious
exertion might be brought forth to
heal the moral and spiritual maladies
of millions of perishing immortals, if
the physicians of our own country
would’’ —would do what? would fol
low the example of the Tennessean ?
this I leave with them, as I have with
him, and would say, avail themselves
of a sick bed opportunity, to press
home on the minds and consciences of
their patients, the shortness of human
life—the certainty of death, and the
awful censequences that await the
finally impenitent, that they might be
healed of their “ moral aud spiritual
maladies.” X.

Mr. N rt x— l am truly gratified
to learn, by a notice in your last pa

a candidate for re-election as a Re

States. The z *al and ability with
which he has maintained the rights of
the Southern states, and of oiu* own
in particular, entitle him not only to
the gratitude, but to the suffrages of
every republican in the staD: in con- 1
nexion with this, permit in'* to state
that his more immediate constituents
have had frequent opportunities to
test the promptitude with which he
attends to any business entrusted to
his care at the seat of government.
This should not, and I trust, will not
he forgotten at the approaching elec
