Young man stick to the farm.
There is in the soil not only a com
petence, but more; and by the dili
gent use of brain and muscle, you
can live a life of independence and
enjoy a measure of freedom and
comfort that is denied to those
employed in most of the other avo
cations. Those who forsake the
farm for the meagre salaries and
hard life of clerks in cities, we
think, are making a great mistake.
Land in this section of the coun
try is higher in price than ever be
fore, and probably will go still high
er, and we urge our enterprising
young men to invest in a home in
the country. Carroll county is sure
ly coming to the front. Her re
sources in the way of soil, climate,
minerals, timbers and water-power
are almost beyond calculation.

U. S. Senator Clay Dead
All Georgia is in mourning be
cause of the death of her beloved
and honored son, United States Sen
ator A. S. Clay. Senator Clay's
death was sudden and occurred in
Atlanta Sunday. He was buried at
Marietta last Tuesday.
As a pure patriot, a faithful ser
vant, an incorruptible statesman, a
tireless worker in the interest of his
state and people, Senator Clay won
the confidence and esteem of all
who knew him. and he ' 1 <
missed in the counsels, not only of
our own state, but also of the na
tion. A vast concourse of people of
all classes and from all portions of
the country attended the funeral.
Among those, who pronounced
eulogies over the dead body of
Senator Clay were Senators Scott,
of West Va., and Frazier, of Teirn.,
Governor-elect Hoke Smith, Hons.
Clark Howell, Thos. Hardwick and
W. C. Adamson, of Georgia. Of
all the tributes paid the honored
dead, not one was more fitting than
that of the last speaker. His words
were the outcome of a strong mind
and a warm heart.
The death of Senator Clay some
what complicates the political situa
tion in Georgia. The Governor will
appoint Senator Clay's successor to
serve until the legislature meets,
which body will elect a senator.
Among those mentioned as probable
successor of Senator Clay are Hons.
J. M. Terrell, Clark Howell, C, R.
Pendleton, Jno. M. Slaton, with the
chances, it is said, in favor of Ter
rell’s appointment.

How They Broke Up.
An amusing story is related in
"Canadian Savage Folk” of the
manner in which an adjournment
was taken by a mass meeting. A
missionary who had started a school
among the Indians met with oppo
sition, and the meeting had been
called in support of the rival
scheme.
There were several speakers who
denounced the school in existence.
We replied vigorously, showing the
efficiency of the school and de
nouncing in turn the methods
adopted by the opposition. An In
dian chief produced some specimens
of work done at the school, and sev
eral speakers supported the work
as it was being done. The climax
was reached when a gentleman rose
and said:
“I move the whole thing bust!”
The chairman put the motion.
“It is moved and seconded that
the whole thing bust!”
The audience sprang to their feet
and, waving lints, yelled “Busted!”
nnd made for the door. Thus end
ed the first and lust opposition in
that matter.
Early Needles.
It is said by some that steel nee
dles were invented by the Moors.
Before their general diffusion
throughout the civilized world
thorns and fish bones, iho latter
with a hole pierced for an eye, were
in use. The first needles made in
London were by a Moor, in the reign
of Henry VIII., and in Queen Ma
rys day steel needles were sold in
Cheapside and other streets of Lon
don. After this time the manufac
ture increased rapidly, many Ger
mans migrating to England and es
tablishing neeck works in various
places
