Mr. Barker is a conscientious Chris tian gentleman, an honest man and one eminently fitted for the office of treasurer. The. meeting at the Baptist church closed Sunday night. Rev. M. L. Lawson preached his best sermon at the last. The subject Sunday night was “The Judgment.” In his clear deliberate way lie made a deep and lasting impression on his congrega tion. The County Board of Education met last Saturday and set Saturday June 18th for the adoption of text books for the next five years. Messrs, L. L. Rawls, M. G. ’Wil liams, Victor La Taste, C. E. Mc Gregor and R. J. Prentiss were pres ent representing their respective book companies. e Say! Nelson & Co., a sawmill firm composed of M. J. Nelson and Norman Statham located seven miles north of here, are doing a nice lum ber business on the river. They cut both pine and hard wood logs and drift them down the river to this point then they are sold and loaded on cars for shipment. These gentle men are energetic and progressive and success will surely crown their efforts. The most beautiful college an nouncement we have seen so far this season is that of the Jasper Normal Institute which was sent us a few days ago. It bears every evidence of the neatness and artistic taste which characterize Profs. Little and Kukh who practically manage that institution and who will manage the Abbeville Normal College and Busi ness Institute. Work on Annex Begun. The work on the school building has commenced in good earnest The brick has all been laid down on the ground’ and all the rough material will be in hand before the end of the week, and before many days, the size and shape of the building can be seen from all points in the town. Dissolution Notice. The copartnership heretofore ex isting between E. A. Jones and R. E. Edenfield has this day been dis solved by mutual consent, R. E. L. Edenfield buying the interest of E. A. Barrett was in ville trading Wednesday. Blackberries and plums are abundant this year than ever before. Hr. Horne is getting a fine prac tice now. Carswell & Stubbs have bought new and much larger outfit that will take tlie place of the old one that was burned. “Old Uncle Jonathan” Fountain joined the Baptist church and was baptised last Sunday. He is T9 years old. A. W, Fuller is devoting more time to his farm this year than ever before. He has a fine one too, for crops have not suffered for rain here in other places. There was a Bible Institute held near here last Friday, Saturday and Sunday looking to the organization of a Baptist church in the near fu ture. A train of eighteen cars loaded at New 'Orleans, with potatoes and onipns, passed through Abbeville last week en route to New York. A startling incident of which Mr. John Oliver of Philadelphia was the subject, is narrated by bim as fol lows: I was in a most dreadful con dition.
