, The battle for commercial suprema

; The commercial gateway to the rich

i jeing determined. Americus is lay
}.m; claim to everything that will
strengthen that center. Likewise Al
- bany, Fitzgerald and Valdosta are still
striving for every advantage in husi

going to develop a powerful commer

} It is now the manufacturing inter

MANY WILL ATTEND MEETING
iIN MACON OCTOBER 26-28
Many people have signified their in
teniions of attending the conference
on social welfare to be held in Macor
Qectober 26 to 28. This is exclusive |
of those women attendant on the
meeting of the Georgia State Yedera |
of Women's c¢lubs, many of whom \\'illl
remain for the convention.
It is expected that by the time the 1
meeting is held there will be severat
hundred people, engaged in every de
partient of social welfare work, in
Macon., Owing to the fact that the
schretary of the convention commit
tee has had an incomplete mailing list
of these who are engaged in social
and charitable work in the state, it is
especially requested that all who h-.wv‘
no¢ received persenal invitations will
make arrangements to attend, notify
ing AMiss Agnes McKinna, at the Ho- |
“tel Lanier, in Macon, of their inten
tion’ inwmediately. |
- Mayors of towns and county school
‘lvmnmissiuners will find a great deal
of advantage in the convention, since
many of the problems of the poorer
children of the towns and country dis
tricts will be under discussion. Any
|of these officials will be especially
welcomed, and any who can aitend
. should communicate at once with
: Miss McKinna.

{ Mr. Roane is well known in Atlania

| Reflected Observations |
: BY MAX E. LAND.
I have been asked several times
since the recent state convention to
give my views and conclusions upon
its actings and doings, but have de
{erred doing so until it is almost too
late. Individual views are sometimes
accurate and sometimes inaccurate
and this is generally on account of the
point of view, which is 80 often in
fluenced by the side a party Lappens
to belong to politically.
Having no ambition personally for
the political game, 1 viewed it merely
as a spectater. Georgia public affairs
have leng been most spectacular and
at times dramatic, but always interest
ing for those who like politics. This
recent state convention was more
jemocratic, quiet orderly than any
we have had for the past ten yecars.
ily more democratic Imean that it was
more like a free for all game, with
less of the slate making, bossism and
steam-rolier autocracy. Yes, it was
indeed a free fight and for this reasorn
.cemed to give more satisfaction than
any conventien in recent years.
‘ihere is apother truth about it, it
was made up largely of very young
men, and there was undoubtedly the
smallest crowd attending a convention
in recent years. _
As to the contested place—Court of
Appeals positions, those who had the
largest number of boosters got the
places regardless of how the people
voted, As to how the people votet
was not much considered or discussed
bt it was a question as to who could
2ot the convention votes. The candi
lates who were alone were left alone
and those who had the boosters won.
Here is another sure thing: The so
called state ring which was broken
and shattered when Hoke Smith walk
ad through Georgia ten years ago, wa#
hack on the job, with full regalia and
sasy rynning machinery. This crowd
will likely stay on the job for anothes
ten years, and then will come defeat
and may be another Hoke, and such
is life.
Here is a most serious question:
Money and money alone will contro!
| Georgia politics and office holding un
less the pecple do something in the
sery near future to prevent it. It
was never intended that our state
house offices should be held only by
he rich. Is the ability and character
»f a man to count for nothing, abso
utely nothing uniess he has money”’
What can we promigé our boys to de
liver them such a country where man
hoood, self regnect, character and abili
v are turned down for the dollar
This is no phantom for the horror i
already at our doer. There is no use
‘or a man to have ambition or aspl
rations unless he has a lot of money tc
>0 with it. There is a remedy for
nearly every disease and to bring
ahout right conditions the people wil’
have to demand that our law makers
cacs a law which wiil prohibit any
candidate for a state-house coffice go
‘ng further than merely announcing
his candidacy in ithe papers, and ther
‘n a limited number of words.
The ccunty unit plan and the popu
lar vote plan is still a matter of con
=iderable talk whenever politics arc
digcussed and it was heard a good
deal at the recent convention. That
was largely a unit vote crowd, how
aver, and it was hard to tell whether
they reflected the sentiment of the
itate or not, T am of the opinion that
‘he majority plan is the most popular
with the masses, notwithstanding the
la argument that the city poliicians
will control. They will do it anyway
vnder any rule if permitted. The
it role is undoubtedly more the in
dividual and exclusive property of the
vrofessional politician. It is natural
‘or it gives him more leverage than
he other plan. The popular vote plan
is more democratic, and the demo:
crats would have won the presidency
‘orty years ago, and only eleven years
after the war if it had been left tc
najority rule. Samuel J Tilden won
he popular vote over R. B. Hays, and
hould Lave heen president. It was
the same way with Harrison and
‘!(w.vlund in the second race. Mr.
i 'eveland had the popular vote, bu!
Mr.. Harrison had the unit vote.

FOR ALDERMAN.
1 hereby announce myself a candi
late for Alderman of the City of Cor
lele subject to the primary of Nov.
Jlst, and if elected I promise a faith
ul performance of the duties of the

I believe there should be a just and

hculd be made to pay somewhat in
reeping with his velume of business.
1 believe that the minimum water
‘ent shovld be reduced to an amount
nly sufficient for the running expense
wnd upkeep of the plant.
The police department being one of
he most important of the city’s gov
swrnment T believe it should be kept
1p to the highest standard of efficien
~y and that there should be three
shifts of patrolmen working 8 hours
sach. I believe for the protection of
‘he city the office of desk sergeant
should be re-established.
I believe the fire department should
he maintained at its present high
standard of efliciency.
1 believe at the very earliest pos
sible date the city should establish
and operate a sanatorium in keeping
with the development and needs of
the city and surrounding territory.
I believe in the observance of the
Christian Sabbath.
If you believe in these principles
vote for me and I will appreciate your
