FIRE IN ELEVENTH AVENUE
RES!DENCE MONDAY MORNING
Fire of unknown origin caused a
damage of between two and three hun
dred dollars Monday morning at the
home of J. M. Purvis on Eleventh ave
nue. The fire caught on the roof
and burned through an ovening cov

damage was done to the furniture
from water and fire.
The house belongs to Mr. Fenn at
Miiton, Fla., formerly of this city, and
the loss is covered by insurance.
Cordele people as well as delegates by
Rev. W. L. Hamblin of Montgomery.
it was a mostforceful sermon and re
ceived many comments by those pres
ent. Twenty dollars was raised at
this meeting. The convention adjourns
tonight with a free banquet given by
the local camp of Cordele. All of the
delegates present are high in their
praises of the treatment accorded
them by both races of this city. Noth
ing seems to have been left off that
would contribute to the comfort and
convenience of the delegates.
The American Woodmen is the only
negro society in America that is a
member of the National Fraternal con
gress and the only negro faternity
~iven the N. F C. rate. The Third
District Convention represents about
5.000 members. Some of the remark
able facts about the American Wood
men are: It has fifty times as much
assets as liabilities. the highest rat
ing of any fraternal society in the
state. The society valuates at 100
ner cent on all its policies, and has
never had an extra assessment during
its fourteen years of existence in
Ceorgia and Alabama. The present
district meeting is a veritable schoo!
of instruction for officers of the loczl
camps in the Georgia and Alabama dis
trict under the leadership of Supreme
Commander C. M. White of Denver
(‘olo. The American Woodmen is the
largest negro faternal institution =
the world representing more than $27.-
000,000 of insurance and valuating z°
100 per cent.
