Price, as commissioner of argiculture, which was tendered h'm by Governce Nat 1. Harris upon Commissioner Price’s being elected as director cf the experiment station. Congressman Hughes has been very active in agricultural affairs of Geor gia for a numter of years and the tender of this apnointment to the head of the agricultural forces of the state car:e as worthy reccgnition of his worik in behalt of progressive farm ing. Mr. Hughes declined the appoint ment in order that he may finish his vork in the next scssicn of congress in behalf of his vocaticnal bill and oth cr progressive legisiation which he is urging. DISTRICT MEETING NEGRO ORDER CONVENES IN CORDELE American Woodmen, Remarkable Or ganization-——lnteresting Sessions. The Third Convention of the Ameri can Woodmen including Alabama and Georgia began its session here Monday in Mt. Zion Bantist church, colored. The opening excrcises were held that aight, replete with the usual welcome addresses and responses, etc. An ap preciative audience was present and a large number of the delegates had aircady arrived. Tuesday morning the reguiar business of the convention was ocpened. At roll call, over seventy-five dele rates answered to their names. The i’asi Chairman, Rev. W. M. Fowler, delivered his annual address which wag fuil of deen thought and help for those present. The convention elected W. . Thomas to preside during this gesgion as Chairman. R. C. Kennedy of Americus was elected Secretary, N. 8. Collins of Ashburn as Assistant Secretary. Mrs. Lula J. Reed of Vi dalin was elected Recorder. Rev. I A. Chance of Montgomery, prelate, J. W. Anderscn, of &elma, reporter, Raiford Ward of Vaidosta, escort, W. Fi. Phillips of Albany, watchman. The Supreme Commander, C. M. FIRE IN ELEVENTH AVENUE RES!DENCE MONDAY MORNING Fire of unknown origin caused a damage of between two and three hun dred dollars Monday morning at the home of J. M. Purvis on Eleventh ave nue. The fire caught on the roof and burned through an ovening cov ering about two rooms. Considerable damage was done to the furniture from water and fire. The house belongs to Mr. Fenn at Miiton, Fla., formerly of this city, and the loss is covered by insurance. Cordele people as well as delegates by Rev. W. L. Hamblin of Montgomery. it was a mostforceful sermon and re ceived many comments by those pres ent. Twenty dollars was raised at this meeting. The convention adjourns tonight with a free banquet given by the local camp of Cordele. All of the delegates present are high in their praises of the treatment accorded them by both races of this city. Noth ing seems to have been left off that would contribute to the comfort and convenience of the delegates. The American Woodmen is the only negro society in America that is a member of the National Fraternal con gress and the only negro faternity ~iven the N. F C. rate. The Third District Convention represents about 5.000 members. Some of the remark able facts about the American Wood men are: It has fifty times as much assets as liabilities. the highest rat ing of any fraternal society in the state. The society valuates at 100 ner cent on all its policies, and has never had an extra assessment during its fourteen years of existence in Ceorgia and Alabama. The present district meeting is a veritable schoo! of instruction for officers of the loczl camps in the Georgia and Alabama dis trict under the leadership of Supreme Commander C. M.
