J. W. CANNON IS A FARMER AS
WELL AS A BANKER AND HAS
PLANS MADE TO TRAVEL |IN
SAFE MANNER AGAINST THE
WEEVIL. ?
J. W. Cannen, cashier of the, Amer!
can National Bank, takes no stock in
what may be a detrimenial belief that
it is possible to grow all cotton again
next year. He peints out the folly of
trying such a thing it weather condi
tions should be anyways normal next
vear and prevent the weevil from
deing more than a fifteen per cent
damage; for in 1918 this section will
be literally covered with boll weevils.
If cotton growers plan to make this
change after one more big cotton crop
they will find it too late to do sp in
S 0 ;z\g,ort a time. Mr. Cannon thinks
the c#eapest experience is that of the
other fellow, a good moral, this. _
Mr. Cannon practices what "he
preaches. Out on his farm on Flint
riveryhe will grow above 75 acres of
wheat on some land that has been en
riched by the Chinese velvet bean.
And this is “some hean,” for it bears
well and analyzes perhaps higher than
the speckled bean. He will cut his
cction racreage sharply, and he says
that if he cannot cover with wheat,
oats and corn. acres left from a cut
in cotton crop, he will lay off rows and
drop corn and velvet beans and give
the land and corn to.the beans, and
he will go there the next vear and do
some fn,.“ming/ on the soil the heans
sheliered and improved.

GNNERS REPORT SHOWS CROPS
BEING GATHERED MORE RAPID
LY THAN THAT OF LAST YEAR.
The ginners report for Crisp coun
ty, ending October 18, shows that the
county has prdouced one of the best
crops in years and that the-opening
and gathering of the staple has been
rapid. The report for this year, as
compared with that of 1915, shows an
increase in ginning in the county of
1,415 bales. This year’s crop up to
Oectober 18, according to the report,
was 18,353 bales and that of last
year, 16,938 bales. This indicates
rapid gathering of the present crop or
a much larger one than was produced
last year and the year before.

INDIVIDUAL DRINKING
* CUPS FOR HORSES
Atlanta, Oct. 28.—That individual
drinking cups for horses will be requir
ed by law in progressive communities
in the not distant future is the belief
expressed by prominent members of
the local society for the prevention of
cruelty to animals. It is pointed out
that equine diseases are transmitted
from one animal to another through
thie medium of <. .riag fcuntains, and
that ore of "he surest means of pre
venting infeetion would be to require
2ach animal to be furnished water in
an individual drinking cup.
