FOSSES SEEK NEGRO
WHO ATTACKED GIRL
Athens, Nov. 30.—Citizens of Bar
row, Jackson and Walton counties are
now in posses led by county officers,
with bloodhounds, scouring the coun
try for a negro charged with attempt
ed assault upon a 12. year-old white
girl, daughter of a well-known farmer
near Winder. The negro met the child
i the road, asked her if she knew
him, and seized her.
Unusually revolting details feature
the story of her struggling with the
brute, who fled when he heard a farm
er in a fleld nearby shouting to his
tem and thought the voice was di
rected toward him.
Three negroes have heen arrested
but are not identified and at midnight
great crowds were following a trail
in Walton county toward Monrce.

ORCHARD WORK
FOR DECEMBER
By J. A. Johnson.
December should be a month of ac
tive work in the orchard. Worming,
pruning and spraying will be in or
der at this time. It is also an ideal
time to plant out a home orchard or
to make additions to the old one.
In most orchards where the trees
are heavily infested with San Jose
gcale it is advisable to put on an ap
plication of concentrated lime-sul
vhur solution during this month and
another application later in the winter.
Peaches. Dig out all borers at base
of tree. This can be done best with
a sharp pointed hook made for the
purpose. The soil should bhe left
away from itlie trees and the crown
exposed until spring. Pruning and
spraying may be done.
Grapes. Prune scuppernongs the
latter part of the month. Other grapes
may be pruned any tine during the
winter,
Good peaches for this section are
Mayflower, Greensboro, Carmen, Wad
dell, Hiley, Elberta, Lemon and Stin
son. They will do well if one will
cultivate them, keep the worms out of
trunks of trees, and spray to keep the
scale off. Do all of this in time and
grow your own friit.
NEW FIGHTING SHIPS

the great building program of sixty
