Without Money Cost
A right or wrong start in 1917 will
make or break most farmers in the
South, We are all facing a crisis.
This war in Hurope puts things in
such uncertainty that no man can
foresee the future with any degree of
clearness.
The sure and certain increase in
cotton acreage means lower cotton
prices next fall. Cost of all food and
grain products is high, so high that
no one can afford to buy and expect
to pay out with cotton. :
It’'s a time above all cthers to play
safe; to produce.ail possible food,
grain and forage supplies on your
own acres; to cut down the store bill,
A good piece of garden ground,
rightly planted, rightly tended anc
kept planted the year round, can bo
' made to pay half your living. It wiil
' gave you more money than you mado
on the best flve acres of cotton you
ever grew! z

| LONG STAPLE CONVENTION
' SOON TO BE HELD IN VALDOSTA
Valdosta, Jan. 16.—Practically com
, plete preparations have been made for
the tri-state convention of sea island
cotton growers which will be held here
Wednesday, January 24, under the au
spices of the Georgia state board of
entomology. 2
Reports from almost every county
in the sea island territory of Florida,
Gecorgia and South -Carolina indicate
that they wiil be well represented by
growers of this staple who are eager
to learn just what they have got to
do to enable them to continue to make
a proiitabie long staple crop in spite
of the Mexican cotton boll weevil. It
is very important that every grower
who can get here should be present.
As a result of the experiments con
ducted under the auspices of the Geor
gias state board of entomology, the
only experiments ever made for the
sclution of the weevil problem in con
nection with long staple cotton, fom'}
varieties of this cotton have been de
veloped which fruit much earlier“than
the varieties now planted, This was
ihe really important problem to be
solved, and it has been done. Where
as the varieties now planted f{ruit in
August and September, the new varie
ties which the board has developed
come to fruitage in June, July and
August, or on an average of nearly
two months earlier than the old ones.
It is the development of these early
varieties, and this fact alone,” which
will enable the sea island growers to
continue to make their crops, regard
less of the presence of the boll weevil.
There are, however, a great many de
tails in connection with the problem
which every grower should Lknow
about, and it is doubly important,
therefore, that all who can posibly do
so should attend this meeting.
. In this tri-state convention the ac- |
tive co-operation of the agricultural
departments of Florida and South Car
clina have been assured and Commis
sioners Wi A. Mcßae and E. J. Watson
of these states resnectively, wiil be
among the speakers of the Valdosta
meeting.
The other speakers will include state
Entomologist E. Lee Worsham, of
Georgia, Assistants Ira Williams and
E. C. Lewis, experts in cotton breed
ing, and W. B. Hunter of the Georgia ‘
Fruit Exchange will talk on Marketing

Pinson Memorial Is Partly Burned
Staurday Night. Fire Started in
Basement.
Sylvester, Jan. 16.—The Pinson Me
morial Methodist church at this place
was badly damaged by fire Saturday
night. The roof and ceiling were de
stroyed. The fire was discovered
shortly after 9 o’clock, and seemed
to originate in the basement where
the heating apparatus is installed, the
heat having been used during the af
ternoon on account of a funeral
which was held in the church.
Prompt service was rendered by
the volunteer fire departemnt, bhut
the fire had gained considerable
headway, and owing to the construc
tion of the building, a stubborn fight
"of more than three HOUIS was Necos
sary to gain complete mastery of
the flames.
The building cost about $20,000
and was dedicated only about four
years ago, it being a -model of its
kind. The damage amounts to prob
ably half the cost of the building and
was only partially covered by insur
ance.
