Gauldin of Colbert are guests of Mr. and J. C. Alexander. Miss Fannie Mat Carruth, who is an employee of The Jefferson Mills, is spending her vacation with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Carruth. Mrs. D. J. D. Myers and two at tractive daughters, Misses Sadie and Mary, of Lafayette, are guests at the Harrison Hotel. Friends of Rev. and Mr3. J. W T . Lord will regret to know of the ill ness of Mrs. Lord, who has been confined to her bed for several days. Miss Louise Bailey, after spend ing the summer months traveling in the interest of the Wayne P. Sewell Cos., has ggne to Marion, Va., where she will teach in the school there this next winter. ■ '■■■ ■ ■■ " i Mr. and Mrs. Ned Pendergrass were in the city Sunday, bringing with them the former’s mother, Mrs. N. N. Pendergrass, who was their guest at their home in Atlanta for several days. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Deavors, who live in Atlanta, have been spending several days with Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Deavors. Mr. Deavors is a former Jackson county citizen, and is deputy sheriff of the Georgia Court of Ap peals. Mrs. Harber, who has been enter taining a delightful house party at her home in Commerce, entertained her guests one afternoon recently with a picnic and swimming party at the Jefferson Recreation Club grounds. Rev. Nat Long will occupy the pul pit at the Methodist church on next Sunday morning at the eleven o’clock service. His friends will be delight ed to give him a splendid congregation on this occasion. In the evening, this congregation will worship at the Presbyterian church at the Union service, when Rev. A. J. Johnson of the Baptist church will deliver one of his interesting sermons. Mis3 Conchita Bertran, who has been visiting Miss Isbelita Ferrer in ' Cuba, returned home Monday. She was accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. 'Ferrer, who cams to visit Mr. Ma nola Ferrer, and to carry back with them their younger son, Paquito, who has been spending the summer with Mr. and Mrs. P. Bertran in Jefferson. Mr. and Mrs. Ferrer were also accompanied by a young Cuban who will join Manola, and both will enter Emory Academy at Oxford this fall. Jefferson friends of Manola and Paquito Ferrer have been delighted and astonished at the rapidity with [which they have learned the English language since coming to Jefferson. 1 The former entered the eleventh 'grade in Martin Institute when he came here from his home in Cuba. He could not speak English, but his progress in mastering the language has been remarkable. Paquito, who is only about ten years of age, ®ame here in June, not able to speak a word in English, and now he reads excellently, and uses some of our most difficult words. In the party who went over to Winder on Monday to meet his father and mother, he acted as interpreter, and did it with wonderful accuracy for one so young and one who had associated with Eng lish speaking people such a short time. Mr. and Mrs. W. 11. Epps were week-end visitors in Atlanta. Mrs. A. S. Crook and daughter o? Tignall are visiting Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Frost. Col. and Mrs. R. L. J. Smith and Col. S. J. Smith of Commerce were in the city Sunday. Mr. G. C. Sargent of Clermont spent a day or two here last week with relatives and friends. Mr. and Mrs. L. F. Elrod and two sons, Frary and Brittain, of Granite Mill were visitors here the past week. Ennis, the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Howell, is visiting re latives in Tignall. Mr. and Mrs. Ab Hardy and chit dren are visiting iff Atlanta this week. Mrs. Waite and two sons of Cler mont, Fla., spent the week-end at the home of her brother, Mr. M. M. Bry an, on Lawrenceville street. Revival services will begin at Aca demy church Sunday night at 8.30, to be conducted by Rev. G. R. Collins. All invited to attend. Messrs. Emory Cheatham of Louisi ana, Bob Cheatham of Alabama, are the guests of their mother, Mrs* J. B. Cheatham. Mrs. O. C. Aderhold is spending this week in Atlanta, the guest of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Parr, at their home on Highland avenue. Master Billy Peeples of Athens is spending this week at the home of his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Aderhold. Mr. Jack Storey and Miss Helcif Storey returned home last week from Granite Hill, where they have been with Mr. and Mrs. L. F. Elrod for several days. Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Peeples of Athens, and Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Aderhold of Commerce, were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Ader hold, in Jefferson. The members of Martin Institute faculty are expected to arrive in the city by next Thursday, to make pre paration for the opening of school on the 6th. Judge and Mrs. W. W. Dickson had as their guests last week, Mrs. S. T. Hood and daughters, Misses Dor ris and Sue, of East Point, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Thurmond and daughter, Miss Hattie, of Charlotte, N. C. Holder, left this week for their home in Augusta. We extend our thanks to Mr. Claud Barnett for a basket of the finest peaches w*e have had this sea son. They came from the farm of Mr. T. I. Hawkins at Appley Valley, which farm Mr. Barnett manages, while Mr. Hawkins raises celery in Sanford, Fla. Twenty cars were shipped from the Hawkins orchard this year, and they were of the very finest quality. Mr. E. C. CoJquitt also shipped several cars from his Apple Valley orchard. Many people have enjoyed these peaches this sea son, as both Mr. Hawkins and Mr. Colquitt were very generous with their fruit, and gave away hundreds of bushels.
