CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MET MONDAY EVENING The Jefferson Chamber of Com merce held a very interesting ses sion at Hotel Harrison, Monday even ing. Standing committees for the, ensuing term were announced, and several matters came up for attention. Rev and Mrs. J. T. Eakes, of ( al houn. Rev. and Mrs. L. E. Roberts, of College Fark, Mr. Ferrer of Cuba, and Mr. Frazier, father of Mrs. T. T. Benton, were guests. All re sponded with talks and greetings. The Transportation Committee, thru its chairman, announced that the deal for the Gainesville Midland Railroad has been closed by the S. A. 1,., and would continue to operate from Gainesville to Athens. This is a source of much satisfaction to all our people, and much credit is due to the activities of this organization. The Agricultural Committee re ported favorably upon a Motorcade of the county on Tuesday of next week. See details elsewhere. A trip of this kind was had the 28th of last August, and great good was derived from it. Let the sections to be yisited spread the news, and have large crowds at each appointment. Many interesting and profitable talks will be made. The matter of dues was mentioned, and Treasurer Staton is anxious that all the members see him at once. Besides the guests of honor, there were present: Revs. L. B. Linn and A. J. Johnson, Messrs. W. W. Dick son, H. T. and H. I. Mobley, U- G. Hardeman, S. Kinningham, S. Kes ler, Homer Hancock, R. J. Kelly, P. Bertran, C. T. Storey, Jr., J. C. Turn er, S. C. Morrison, T. T. Benton, P. C. Staton, A. H. Moore, H. W. Davis, C. Y. Daniel, J. E. Randolph, W. M. McDonald, Drs. E. M. McDonald and J. C. Bennett. Perhaps the most interesting event of the evening was the talk of Mr. Ferrer, in Spanish, and interpreted by Mr. Bertran. Reporter. BROCKTON Rev. L. B. Linn preached here last Sunday p. m. Mr. and Mrs. John Thurmon and daughter, Miss Hattie, from Char lotte, N. C., were visiting relatives and friends here last week. Miss Nita Daniel from Monroe is visiting her mother here for a few days. Mr. Gilbert Potts from Atlanta was visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Luther Potts, last week-end. Mr. John Carter from Alma, Ga., Misses Melba, Nellie and Bonnie Carter from Apple Valley, Miss Dun can from Orlando, Fla., and Edin burg, Scotland, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Chandler and Walter Crawford from Athens, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Bar nett, Elliott and Ora Wicr, were visitors at the home of J. D. Eckles Sunday. ' Rev. W. 11. Venable and wife were visiting relatives here recently. Several of our people attended the services at Thyatira church last week. Miss Norine Hutchins from Hood's Academy spent the week-end with Miss Demaris Thurmon. PLAIN VIEW The singing given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Langford, Satur day night, was enjoyed by a large crowd. Mrs. B. H. Parks has returned home, after spending a while with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Webb of near Commerce. Mrs. Rene Ganblin and little daugh ters, Lois and Tommy, of Atlanta, have returned home, after a two weeks visit here with friends and relatives. Mrs. E. E. Lay spent a few days last week with her daughter, Mrs. T. E. Hutchins. Misses Monteene and Ethelene Perry spent last Friday with Mrs. Bill Robbers of Jefferson. Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Parks spent last Saturday afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. Bill Langford. Mr. J. VV. Tolbert of Maysville spent last Friday and Saturday with Mr. and Mrs. N. H. Perry and fami ly. Mr. and Mrs. J. J. The Georgia Railway & Power line is being rapidly completed through this community. Mr. E. L. Sellers of Easley, S. C., was among the visitors here during the past week. Benton, J. C. Turner and P. Cooley. The music quartette was composed of J. E. Randolph, W. P. Thompson, F. C. Staton and U. G. Hardeman; Mrs. Thompson pianist. Mr. and Mi's. Guy G. J SPLENDID COLORED CITIZEN PASSES Hook, a well-known colored citizen of Jefferson, the wife of Hugh Han cock, died suddenly Tuesday morn ing from aciile indisgestion. She was a daughter of the late Bob Wat son, and was held in high esteem by the white people of Jefferson, as well as by the people of her own race. The length of said railroad will be approximately thirty-five (35) miles. Said railroad will run from Gaines ville, in County, to Fowler’s Junction, in Clarke County, and will also extend to the following principal places: Belmont and Jefferson. Without excluding or limiting oth- ] ler corporate powers, the corporation shall have power: (1) To erect, i maintain and operate telegraph and I telephone lines along the lines? of said railroad, and to transact a com mercial telegraph and express busi ness; (2) To build, construct, own, lease, charter and operate steam boats, vessels or other water craft in connection with, or as a part of, the business or operation of said rail road, or independently; (3) To con duct a general warehouse business, and to construct, lease, purchase or otherwise to acquire and to own, operate and dispose of docks, whar ves, terminals, harbors, slips, stor age and loading plants and lighter age; (4) To acquire, hold and dis pose of stocks and bonds of other corporations; (5) To make, negotiate, purchase, sell, discount, endorse, as sume, insure, or guarantee any con -1 tract or contract obligation, bond, note, mortgage or other evidence of indebtedness connected in any man ner with the business of the cor poration or of any related corpor ation; (6) To aid in the acquisition, ! construction, maintenance, operation, extension, improvement, betterment | or enlargement of any railroad, rail road property or facility, or any 1 property thereafter proposed for rail- way use or acquired by the corpor ation or any related corporation, whether title be in the name of the company or of any related corpor ation, and to lend its credit in any manner for any such purpose or to any related corporation; (7) To exe cute, join in or otherwise subject its. properties and assets, presently own- j ed or subsequently to be acquired, or any part thereof, to any mortgage or other instrument or instruments se curing any bonds or other indebted ness of the company, executed, cre ated, or guaranteed by the company, seperately or jointly, with any per son or persons, or with any other corporation or corporations; (8) To enter into lease, trackage or operat ing agreements with any one or more persons, covering all or any of this company’s properties; or all or any of the properties of such other per sons or cprporation, or any of them, (9. To retire-purchase, hold, and re-issue, or sell its own stock, bonds or other forms of indebtedness, pro vided that while owning its own stock the same shall not be voted. The amount of capital stock of the proposed corporation will be Three Hundred Thousand Dollars ($300,- 00.00) of common stock, divided into three thousand (3,000) shares of the par value of SIOO.OO each. The corporation is to continue for one hundred and one years. The principal office of said rail road company is to be located in the City of Savannah, Georgia; the orga nization, meeting of the stockhold ers of the company, and the regular annual stockholders meetings for election of directors, shall be held at the principal office of the company, but any or all other meetings of stockholders and all meetings of the directors, may be held at any place, either within or without the State of Georgia.
