WEDNESDAY, MARCH 8, 2023 THE JACKSON HERALD PAGE 11A Obituaries Johnnie Dove Gowder LULA — Johnnie Dove Gowder, 94, Lula, entered the presence of her Lord and Savior Saturday, February 25, 2023, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Johnnie was bom on April 29, 1928, to John M. Dove and Nonie Abernathy Dove. Af ter graduating from Gillsvillle High School she completed Perry Business School. She worked as a teacher’s aide at Lula Elementary School, be fore starting her own success ful business, “Lanier Arts and Crafts,” in 1972, where she sold ceramics, Cabbage Patch Kids, dolls, collectibles and jewelry. Johnnie was a charter mem ber of Liberty Baptist Church in Lula. She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Roy Gowder; grandson, Bran don Porter; brother, Ed Dove; and sisters, Thelma Benton and Bil lie He well. Johnnie had a heart for Jesus and her family. She touched the lives of all who knew her with her sense of humor, creativity and her ability to put people at ease with her beautiful smile. Left to cherish precious memories, daughters, Grenae (Dick) Thompson and Tina (Ricky) Porter; grandchildren, Michele Bruce, Stephen Thompson, Jennifer (Eric) Brown, Dusty (Kalen) Porter and Jessica (Andrew) Dennis; great-granddaughters, Mary Margaret (Jamie), Isabella, Kendall, Shiloh, Made, Millie and Skyla; great-grandson, Walker; sister, Margie House; sister-in-law, Jerolene Dove; and a host of nieces, nephews and other family members also survive. Week of March 5-11 Mary “Tomi” Mitchell HOSCHTON — Mary “Tomi” Mitchell, 93, Hoschton, passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2023. Tomi grew up on a cattle ranch in Canton. While still in high school, she was employed with Southern Bell. Later Tomi moved to the Stone Mountain/Tucker area where she and her husband raised their children. They then moved to a farm in Buford and later to the golf course at Chateau Elan to be with family. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren always en joyed visiting with her. Tomi was a friend to all. Tomi was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Douglas Mitchell; parents, Jake and Lucile Johnson; and other siblings. Week of March 5-11 George Edward Morris George Edward Morris, 66, passed away on Monday, February 27, 2023, following a long and courageous battle with Myelo dysplasia. He was born to Violet Mullenax Morris and Howard George Morris on March 16, 1956, on Langley Air Force Base in Vir ginia. George spent most of his life in Birmingham, Alabama, followed by many years residing in Jacksonville, Alabama where he and his wife raised their two children. More recently, he re sided in Winder, where he moved upon retirement to be closer to his children. George graduated from Huffman High School in 1974 where he met the love of his life and wife of 49 years. They would marry and start raising a family in Center Point, Alabama, while George worked at McWane Cast Iron Pipe in Birmingham, for more than 10 years. Through the years, George grew profes sionally, serving in a variety of roles including plant manager and transferring to work loca tions in Oxford, Alabama and Phillipsburg, New Jersey. George was an avid Univer sity of Alabama football fan, spending many seasons attend ing games and sharing his love for The Tide with his two chil dren. When he wasn’t working or attending his children's ex tracurricular activities, George made time for boating, fishing and hunting with friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Violet and Howard; his paternal grandparents, Howard and Hazel Morris, Pursglove, West Virginia; and in-laws, Shirley Brookins, Birmingham, and Charles Brookins, Pensacola, Florida. George is survived by his loving wife, Gwendolyn Brookins Morris; his two children, Melissa (Andy) Anderson, Statham, and Brandon Morris, Atlanta; his three grandchildren, Michael, Jacob and Parker Anderson; his three sisters, Karen (Randy) Cunningham, Monica (Dave) Miller and Shannon (James) Fer guson; sister-in-law, Linda (Dennis) White; and countless other family members. Week of March 5-11 Eddy Morrison DANIELSVILLE — Eddy Morrison, 66, Danielsville, passed away on Monday, February 27, 2023 at St. Mary's Hospice House. Mr. Morrison was born in Commerce, to the late Douglas and Mary Jo Shelnutt Morrison. Mr. Morrison was a construction worker. In addition to his parents, Mr. Morrison was also preced ed in death by his wife, Linda Morrison. Mr. Morrison is survived by his daughters, Brandi Dean (Kev in), Gainesville, Jessie Collins (Chester), Pamplin, Va., and Susan Collins, Ga.; sisters, Stacey Burkhalter (Rex) and Mitzi Morgan (Donnie), both of Danielsville; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Published by MainStreet Newspapers, Inc. Week of March 5-11 David Gilbert Perkins Sr. WINDER — David Gilbert Perkins Sr., 74, Winder, passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2023. Born March 12, 1948, Da vid was a lifelong resident of Barrow County and the son of Gilbert and Geneva Perkins. Paralyzed as the result of an automobile accident his senior year at Winder-Barrow High School, he fought his entire life to remove obstacles for him self and other disabled people. He met every challenge placed before him. The first wheelchair student at the Uni versity of Georgia, he paved the way for others to follow him receiving a B.S. in Agri cultural Economics in 1971. He learned to fly a plane and was in strumental in getting the county to build a ramp for handicapped persons at the Barrow County Courthouse. David received both state and national awards for his work with the Department of Agriculture and for removing architectural barriers for the dis abled. He proved that being a quadraplegic wouldn’t keep him from participating in sports. Winning gold and bronze medals for jave lin, discus and shot-put, qualified him to compete in the national wheelchair games in the 1980’s. Because of his athletic success and his dogged determination, David was selected to carry the Olympic torch as it traveled through Georgia in 1996. As his son, Dave, grew, David was one of his basketball coaches. David always had the admiration and support of his family. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Dave and Sta- ci Perkins, Douglasville; grandchildren, Clayton, Sydney and Maddyn; brother, Dana (Ann) Perkins; sister, Peggy Perkins; and nephews, Lewis, Clint and Heath Perkins. Week of March 5-11 Fannie Bell (Sanders) Sims Fannie Bell (Sanders) Sims, 94, passed on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at The Landings of Gainesville, with family by her side. Fannie was born January 15, 1929, in Jefferson, to the late James Burton Sanders and Alma (Smith) Sanders. She was the youngest of 10 children, all preceded her in death. Fannie married the late James Sims in 1946 and six children were born from their union. Fannie professed her life to Christ at an early age. She was a charter member of Pine Grove Bap tist Church, now known as Emmanuel Community Church. She loved working in the church and cherished praising the Lord. She taught Sunday School, training union, Vacation Bible School, served on several committees and always enjoyed helping others. Fannie loved to read her Bible, praying for and with others and spending time with family and friends. She was a loving and caring person, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grand mother and friend, always thinking of others first. “To Know Her was to Love Her.” In addition to her late hus band, Fannie is preceded in death by her daughter, Ruby Nell Sims. Mr. Tolbert attended the First Baptist Church of Jefferson and also The Jefferson Church. Along with his family Mr. Tol bert operated the Otasco Store in Jefferson for 28 years, was a partner at Bailey Winston Real Estate Management, LLC, and has served as Mayor of Pender grass for 23 years. In addition to his parents, Mr. Tolbert is preceded by his wife of 57 years, Glenda Gee Tolbert; brother, Alfred "Tabo" Tolbert; and sisters, Nell Tolbert Segars and Becky Tolbert Slover. White, PhD, 76, Alto, passed away on Friday, March 3, 2023. Dr. White was born on May 19, 1946 in Habersham Coun ty to the late Ralph Edgar White and Maybelle Good- son White. He was saved on the third Sunday of August in 1963 at Rock Springs Baptist Church and was baptized at Moss Mill Creek. Dr. White obtained his Mas ter's degree from the Universi ty of Georgia and his Doctorate Degree from Indiana Universi ty. He was a college professor, having served at Piedmont University for 30 years. Dr. White was a member of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans as well as the Sons of the American Revolution. Survivors include his loving wife of 52 years, Jeanne Vosecky White, Alto; sons and daughters-in-law.
