PAGE 10 A THE JACKSON HERALD WEDNESDAY, MARCH 29, 2023 Obituaries Hazel Pruett Allen Hazel Pruett Allen, 89, passed away on Monday, March 20, 2023, following a stroke in July of 2022. Hazel was bom at home in Bethlehem, on Decem ber 3, 1933, to Chester and Pearl Edwards Pru ett. She had two older brothers, Leeon (Frances) Pruett and Lamar (Joan) Pruett, who have preced ed her. She is survived by a sister-in-law and friend, Joan Pruett Moon. Ha zel was married in 1950 to Herman Allen who passed away in June of 2017. They were married for 67 years and had three daugh ters, Janice (Bill Anderson) Allen, Wanda (Johnny Doster) and Annette (Paul) Huckfeldt. Hazel spent her early years as a stay-at-home moth er of three girls. She cooked three full meals a day and sewed all the dresses for the girls. As time went on and the girls were older and in school, she went to work at Carwood Manufacturing Co. in the book keeping department. When Carwood became Duck Head, she transferred to the new location and retired in 1996. Hazel was devoted to serving the Lord and her church, Bethlehem First United Methodist Church. She started teaching in the nursery-preschool class in 1959 because her youngest girl cried and wanted her to stay with her. And stay she did. For 40 years she taught many of the children whom she had the privi lege to watch grow up in church. Every Sunday, “Miss Hazel” carried a box of animal crackers for the Sun day School children's snack. She served as president of the Bethlehem STARS (Seniors That Are Really Special) at BFUMC. This was an older adult group for which she planned activities and outings. Hazel had many dear friends that she knew all her life and enjoyed visits and sometimes daily phone calls from them. In addition to her three daughters, Hazel is survived by 10 grandchildren, Joy (Billy) Skaggs, Alana (Der rick) Sparks, Andy (Linda) Cooper, Brooke (Vasek) Slamkova, Van (Katy) Cooper, Lacy (Freddy) Ar riaga, Mark (Pui) Doster, Jenny (Matt) Doster, Mat thew Huckfeldt and Elizabeth (Alfredo) Huerta; one step-granddaughter, Sandi (Leon) Anderson-Quave; 15 great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grand- children. Before any holiday, she would prepare for about 40 people. She was blessed with so many family mem bers, nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends. She was the daughter of the late Walter Ernest and Estelle Bales Chancey. In addition to her par ents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend Henry Bennett; brother, Jim Chancey; and a sister, Annie Ruth Harvey. Mrs. Eskew was bom in Jefferson, a daughter of the late John Carlton Carruth Sr. and the late Maude Fleming Carruth. Mrs. Eskew was retired from AT&T after 40 years as a supervisor for the en gineering department. Mrs. Eskew was very active in Galilee Christian Church where she was a member, and throughout the community having had memberships in the Jef ferson Home and Garden Club, Jefferson Women’s Club, Red Hat Society and AT&T Pioneers. She was a gracious and giving person to all she came in contact with. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Eskew is preced ed by her husband Grady Eskew; grandson, Robert Neal Cowan Jr.; great-granddaughter, Kellan Victoria Cowan; sister, Clara C. Week of March 26-April 1 Nelson Fitzpatrick PANAMA CITY BEACH, FLORIDA — Nelson Fitzpatrick, 81, passed away on Sunday, March 19, 2023 at his home in Panama City Beach, Florida, after an extended illness. Nelson was bom in Commerce to Clyde and Nell Minish Fitzpatrick on July 13, 1941. Nelson graduated from UGA in 1963, then taught and coached football, basket ball and track and field at North Hall and Norcross high schools for several years. After coaching he worked his way up in the corporate world. Nelson retired from owning and operating gyms in Athens and Commerce. In addition to his parents Nelson was preceded in death by his brother, Leon Fitzpatrick. Nelson was a man of many interests. He enjoyed the beach, sports, running marathons, showing his Shih Tzu dogs, and traveling in his Coach. Nelson is survived by his son, Chris (Tami) Fitzpat rick; daughter, Kelly Gandara (Danny); brother, Jeff (Jane) Fitzpatrick; four grandchildren, Daniel (Court ney), Kevin (Kelsey), Connor and Carson; and four great-grandchildren, Reese, Kyndra, Xayne and Jane; girlfriend, Kelli Harrison; nieces, Kasi Thumiond and Ashley Jenkins; and nephew, Zach Fitzpatrick.
