Chavis named 2023 Tricia Saunders High School Excellence Award Recipient Lilly Chavis of Jack- son County High School was recently named the 2023 Tricia Saunders High School Excellence Award recipient for the State of Georgia. The award is named after Tricia Saunders, who was a four-time World Champion female wrestler. Saunders was the first woman to be inducted as a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2006 and was inducted into the United World Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2011. This award recogniz es and honors the nation’s most outstanding high school senior female wres tlers for their success and distinction in wrestling, educational achievement, citizenship, and their com munity service impact. Cochran named 2023 Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award Recipient Luke Cochran of Jef ferson High School was recently named the 2023 Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award recipi ent for the State of Geor gia. The Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award was established to honor Olympic and World Cham pion Dave Schultz, whose career was ultimately cut short when he was mur dered in 1996. Schultz was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as a distinguished member in 1997 and as a member of the United States Wres tling Hall of Fame in 2016. This award recognizes and honors the nation’s most outstanding high school senior male wres tlers for their success and distinction in wrestling, educational achievement, citizenship, and their com munity service impact. Eagles see success on the Track By Kelby Anderson and Roberto Calix (East Jackson Journalism Students) At the end of day one of Region 8AA competition. East Jackson is sending four throwers to section als. Jamal Neal (senior) placed second in shot and fourth in discus, Hannah Kent placed fourth in dis cus, Jacob Collins placed third in discus and Ryleigh Nunn placed fourth in shot. “With this being my fi nal year at East Jackson I am excited to participate in sectionals. I hope that this event won’t be the last and that I can make it to state,” Neal stated. East Jackson has two jumpers that also ad vanced. Arya Law placed second in high jump and triple jump and Destiny Rakestraw placed third in the triple jump. Four Eagle runners earned a spot at sectionals. Isael Guerra, Griffin Mc Daniel, Michael Kelleher , and Colin Ramsey as they placed third in the boys 4x800. However, there is still more to come as multiple Eagles runners still have the opportunity to qual ify for sectionals. Alivia Weaver, Kaityln Weaver (senior). Tatum Jones (se nior) will compete in the 100 meter hurdles, Jariah Thomas will compete in the 100 meter race. Anto nia Pittman (senior) will compete in both the 200 meter and 400 meter race, while both Kaitlyn Weav er, Alivia Weaver and Ja cob Hertzog will compete in the 300 meter hurdles. Israel Guerra (senior) will run in the 800 meter race, while Javon Huff and TJ Jackson will compete in the 200 meter race. Leading up to the fi nals Jones shared. “ Run ning hurdles with Kaitlyn throughout high school has been amazing. We push each other at practic es and meets because we want each other to do the best. I get excited and hap py about running hurdles since I’m doing something that I love and running with my friends beside me pushes me to be better. Af ter all, the three of us want to run at sectionals and at state.” Region finals will take place on Wed. (Apr. 26) at East Jackson High School and sectionals are sched uled May 6 at EJHS.
