Betty was bom in Oglethorpe County to Wayne and Reba (Car ter) Lance on March 30, 1933. Over the years, Bet ty was a faithful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She trusted Jesus Christ as her Savior many years ago and was a member for many years of Pleas ant Grove Baptist Church in the Neese community. Over the years, she worked at Big Ace sewing plant, Discount Jungle Clothing, and with her broth ers at Bill’s BBQ. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Hoyt Black; her father, Wayne Lance, when she was three years old; her mother, Reba Carter Lance Pat terson; step-father, Cleo Patterson; her grandson, Gabriel David Black; her brother, William Leon “Bill” Lance and sister-in-law, Edna Wynn Lance; and her brother, Robert Wayne “Bob” Lance. Betty is survived by her children, Dawn and Mike King, David and Rhonda Black, and Barry and Sharon Black; grandchildren, Bethany Wright, Nathaniel and Sarah Black, Andrew and Katelynn King, Hannah and Dane Gaskins and Caitlyn and Wes Hendrix; great-grandchildren, Camden Wright, Adeline Black and Sophie Black; brother and sis ter-in-law, Tom and Carol Patterson; sister-in-law, Brenda Lance; several nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews. A native of the Wind er area, he was the son of the late Erby Ralph Clack Jr. and Geraldine Chapman. Barry had worked in construction with Jer ry Tolbert and Aldridge Construction as a super visor. He was a member of Colbert United Meth odist Church. Week of April 30-May 6 Carolyn Crumbley Durst HOSCHTON — Carolyn Crumbley Durst, 88, Hoschton, formerly of Salt Springs, Florida, passed away on Monday, April 17, 2023. Carolyn was born to the late Robert Carl Beck ham and the late Dollie Haines Beckham Harris on January 27, 1935, in Dallas, Texas. Her father was a minister and owned a general store. The family, including little Carolyn, worked long hours in the store to help support one another. Carolyn graduat ed from Brown High School in Atlanta and from DeKalb Jr. College in business. She served as a volunteer with the VFW and as an organ ist with The Salt Springs Christian Church. Her first marriage was in 1952 to Clarence “Butch” Lee Crumbley. At 17, she began her ca reer with a small insurance agency. Later she worked for State Parm Insurance in Atlanta and then in Pen sacola, Pla. Over the decades, senior managers and executives appreciated that Carolyn had become the “Go To” person of knowledge and history for proce dures and policies at the company. She retired as an insurance adjuster with State Parm, after 48 years of service. Carolyn met her second husband, Don Durst, in 1981 at a VFW event. Don was a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star recipient and served four tours in Viet nam. The two had much in common. Don shared Carolyn’s dreams: they built and lived in their Wale- ska, authentic “Log Cabin in the Mountains” for several years, and later built a new home to “Live near the Beach” in Pensacola, Plorida, and finally one last move to Salt Springs, Plorida, to be near Don’s family. They were both avid campers and traveled around the U.S. ultimately upgrading to a motorhome for travel between their latest home in Salt Springs, Plorida, and a campsite lot at Riverside Properties on the Chattahoochee River in Helen. After Don’s passing, Carolyn relocated to the Deaton Creek community located in Hoschton, in 2013, to be near her family. Carolyn is preceded by her husbands, Clarence “Butch” Lee Crumbley, of 25 years, and father to her sons; Sergeant Pirst Class (SPC) Donald Wade Durst, her spouse of 28 years; and siblings, Rosalind Newman, Geraldine Miller, Richard Harris and Wil ma Beckham. Carolyn’s memory will be cherished by her sons, Michael Alan Crumbley and David Eugene Crumb ley and his wife, Patricia Price; grandchildren, Jen nifer Price and Cori Hembree and her husband, Jer emy Hembree; great-grandchildren, Alex Hembree and Parker Hembree; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Week of April 30-May 6 Cammie Irene (Holder) Hackett JEFLERSON — Cammie Irene (Holder) Hackett, 95, Jefferson, hung up her hat for the last time and moved on to the great garden in the sky on Lriday, April 28, 2023. Irene was born Octo ber 15, 1927, and is the only daughter of the late Earnest and Ola Mae (Martin) Holder from Jackson County. Many knew Irene over the years as she ran Hackett’s Store in Jeffer son with her husband, quilted an untold num ber of baby blankets for family and neighbors, and as the matriarch of her large family know to all as Granny Hackett. Irene was an avid gardener, from her famous dai sies that spread across her entire yard to impressive vegetable gardens that yielded a bounty every year. She was happiest in her bucket hat and gloves, out in the garden or yard, as the original plant lady. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ken neth Hackett Sr.; son, Jack; and brothers, Brahman, Barty, Jack P. and Baxter Holder. Irene is survived by her sister-in-law, Wilma Holder; son, Kenneth Hackett Jr. (Crystal); daugh ters, Brenda Cross, Shela Nolan and Cathy Riggs (Chip); her nine grandchildren, Heather, Hayley, Hope, Donald, Amanda, Robert, Daniel, Courtney and Clarissa,; and 15 great-grandchildren, Gunner, Cade, Owen, Truitt, Logan, Brent, Kyle, Annie, James, Bradley, Moses, Lana, Erin, Morgan and Charlie.
