The event celebrated 12 graduating seniors from the class of 2023 who have made the decision to pur sue a career in education. Students participating were: Paden Bell, Kar rington Cook, Connor Jeans, Clarissa Kirby, Cayden Lord. Kenlie Love, Katey Maxwell. Carly Mc Duffie. Riley McDuffie, Ashley Prescott, Julie We hunt and Angie Zelaya. Coach Mark Hale was the guest speaker and several college represen tatives also attended the event. Superintendent Joy Tolbert and CHS teacher Jenny Palmer also spoke at the event. SAUNDERS EARNS HONORABLE MENTION IN AUTHOR CONTEST East Jackson Middle School sixth-grader Riley Saunders was named an Honorable Mention at the state level of the Young Georgia Authors Competition. Saun ders’ work was entitled “Pressure” and she was the only state honoree from the Northeast Geor gia RESA. News from colleges and universities TIPTON AMONG UNG BIOLOGY STUDENTS TO PRESENT AT CONFERENCE Twelve students and faculty mem bers from the University of North Georgia (UNG) attended the Georgia Chapter of The Wildlife Society (GA TWS) annual meeting held March 2-3 in Macon. Marcus Tipton, of Hoschton, was among those participating. Tipton, along with Phyllip Ramey, Atticus Leithner, Ash Arnold, Jackie Churchman, McKenna Koons, Haley McCaleb and Madeline Russell — presented a project with Ashlee Mc- Caskill, professor of biology and Envi ronmental Leadership Center director, “Comparison of Pool Characteristics of Granite Outcrops at Clinton Nature Preserve, Douglas County. Georgia.” The group won first place for under graduate poster. AREA RESIDENTS INDUCTED INTO HONOR SOCIETY Area residents were recently initiat ed into The Honor Society of Phi Kap pa Phi. the nation’s oldest and most se lective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines: •Rachel Boyd of Jefferson at Mercer University •Taylor Kennedy of Commerce at Mercer University •Madison Kitchens of Commerce at University of North Georgia They are among approximately 25,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomi nation and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10% of seniors and 7.5% of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10% of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction. ROMERO RECEIVES BIOBUS SCHOLARSHIP Georgia State University student Eloisa Romero recently received the Barbara Baumstark BioBus Program Undergraduate Award. Romero, of Jefferson, is a bachelor's student in Biology in the College of Arts and Sciences. This scholarship supports under graduate and graduate students with demonstrated interest in the BioBus which provides hands-on activities and demonstrations designed to get K-12 students interested in STEM ed ucation.
