Church news for the week of Sept. 6 includes:
ANTIOCH UMC TO
CELEBRATE HOMECOMING
Antioch United Methodist Church will cele
brate 224 years during homecoming on Septem
ber 10, beginning with morning worship at 11 a.m.
The Rev. Gary Whitsone will preach and music
will be provided by Todd Chandler and the East
Jackson Comprehensive High School Choir.
Barbecue and hash will be furnished. Every
one is ask to bring side dishes, desserts and
drinks.
The church is located at 885 Antioch Church
Rd., Nicholson.
BEAVERDAM BAPTIST PLANS
ARTS AND CRAFTS FESTIVAL
Beaverdam Baptist Church is seeking crafters
to participate in "Marketplace at Bethlehem," an
arts and crafts festival.
The festival is planned Oct. 21 from 9 a.m. to
3 p.m.
Those interested in participating are asked to
contact Lynda Culpepper at 706-202-6032 for an
application to reserve a booth.
The booth fee is a fundraiser for Operation
Christmas Child.
Beaverdam Baptist is located at 1627 Hwy. 59,
Commerce.
BLACKS CREEK OFFERS
YOUTH PROGRAMS
Blacks Creek Baptist Church kicks off the
"Creek Kids" program on Wednesday, September
6.
Children preschool through 6th grade may be
dropped off at 5:30 p.m. for meal time. Pick-up
time will be at 7:30 p.m. The program will consist
of Hyfi Bible study and games.
"Blacks Creek is excited to offer this engag
ing new kids' curriculum,” church leaders said.
"Hyfi gets kids engaged with a fun, high-energy
camp-like experience featuring monthly themes.
Join us this school year as we explore the Bible
and make new friends."
Blacks Creek Youth, 7th-12th grade students,
meet on Wednesday evenings during the school
year from 5:30-7:30 p.m. After a meal together,
these pre-teens and teens gather for Bible study,
praise worship and music, and team-building
activities.
ACTIVE SHOOTER
TRAINING PLANNED
ATTHE PURPOSE CHURCH
The Purpose Church will host a civilian re
sponse to active shooter event on Thursday,
Sept. 7, from 6-8 p.m.
Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events
(CRASE) is a free two-hour course that teaches
individuals in the community howto prepare for,
and take action during active shooter events.
CRASE is designed and built on the Avoid, Deny
Defend (ADD) strategy developed by ALERRT,
and provides strategies, guidance and a proven
plan for surviving an active shooter event. Top
ics include the history and prevalence of active
shooter events, civilian response options, med
ical issues and considerations for conducting
drills.
Chris Nichols, a law enforcement veteran
with over 24 years experience, and The Purpose
Church are hosting the program.
The Purpose Church is located at 103 Thyatira
Community Church Rd., Jefferson.
CAR SHOW PLANNED
AT GILLSVILLE BAPTIST
A "Crusin with Chris Car Show" will be held on
Saturday, Sept. 23, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Gills-
ville Baptist Church, located at 2595 Hwy. 323,
Gillsville.
The Top 20 cars in the show will receive a
plaque.
The event will include a soup bean and corn-
bread supper.
The rain date will be held on Sept. 30.
WOMEN OF BETHANY
PLAN YARD SALE
The Women of Bethany will be hosting a yard
sale September 8 (8 a.m.-5 p.m.) and Sept. 9
(8 a.m. to 1 p.m.) Items will be half price from
11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Two hot dogs, chips, a cookie and a drink will
be available for $5.
If you would like to have a table of your own,
call the church at 706-367-8042. The cost is $15
per table, two tables for $25, and outside table
for $10. If you have any items you would like to

GOLF TOURNAMENT PLANNED AT
GILLSVILLE BAPTIST
Gillsville Baptist Church will hold a golf tour
nament at Double Oaks Golf Club, Commerce, on
Saturday, Sept. 16.
The shot gun start will be at 9 a.m.
Proceeds will help fund the completion of the
children's playground.

Team registration is $300 team cost or $75 per

Extra opportunities to win will include: 4 Mul

along with five closest to the pin awards.
Lunch and drinks will be provided at the tour
nament.

JOLLY AGERS MEET MONTHLY
Jolly Agers group meets on the second
Tuesday of each month at noon at First Baptist
Church of Commerce. Jolly Ages is a senior adult
ministry for those 60 years of age and older. The
group meetings in the Fellowship Hall at FBCJ
for a covered dish luncheon and an inspirational
program.
CROSSROADS CHURCH OFFERS
FREE GROCERIES
Crossroads Church in Jefferson will offer free
groceries for the needy on the second Monday
of each month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Crossroads
Church is located at 25 Hawkins Ln., Jefferson.
RIVER OF LIFE OFFERS
FREE GROCERIES
River of Life Worship Center offers free grocer
ies on the last Saturday of each month. The event
is held from 8:30-10 a.m. River of Life is located at
4971 Hwy. 441, Nicholson.
WMU MEETS AT FIRST
BAPTIST COMMERCE
The WMU meets every second Tuesday of the
month at First Baptist Church of Commerce.
“Come join the Bible study, fellowship and
fun," organizers said.

PUBLIC HEARING
The Jackson County Board of Commissioners will hold a pub
lic hearing at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, September 18, 2023, at the
Jackson County Courthouse at 5000 Jackson Parkway, Jeffer
son, Georgia, to consider the following matter:
1. The Capital Improvement Element (CIE) and Community
Work Program annual update that is required by the Georgia
Department of Community Affairs (DCA).
Documents and public hearing procedures are available for re
view in the Planning Division Office, of the Department of Pub
lic Development during regular office hours.
All interested persons are invited to attend.

HOLDING SEPT. 10 MEETING
The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) invites the public
to attend its Sept. 10,2 p.m. meeting in the community room located on the lower lever of the
Braselton Police and Municipal Building at 4050 Hwy. 53.
"We support historic preservation, education and patriotism," organizers said. "Please join
us on Sept. 10 and learn more about the DAR."
RETIRED EDUCATORS TO MEET SEPT. 14
The Jackson County Area Retired Educators' Association will meet on Thursday, Sept. 14, at
12 p.m. at the Empower College and Career Center located in the former Jackson County High
School in Jefferson. The meeting will begin at 12 noon.
The program will be presented by Amity Hardegree, Assistant Superintendent For Teaching
and Learning, Jackson County Schools.
Refreshments will be served.
CRAWFORD LONG MUSEUM PLANS
'FLAPPER TO MOD' PROGRAM
The Crawford W. Long Museum is hosting a special program, "Flapper to Mod," on Sept. 14
at 6 p.m.
From women's suffrage to the youth culture of the swinging ‘60s, join Sarah Beth Vogt for
a discussion of the social, historical and political influences on women's fashion throughout
each decade from the 1920s-1960s.
Compare and contrast style trends of the 1920s and 1960s and examine vintage garments
and accessories up close.
The cost is $8 for members and $10 for non-members.

FUNDRAISER PLANNED FOR AREA CHILD
WITH RARE GENETIC DISORDER
A fundraiser is planned Sept. 17 in Commerce for a local boy with a rare genetic disorder.
Thunder Tumbling will host a fundraiser for Gannon Fields, a 6-year-old boy who was diag
nosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy at 3 months old. The "Taste of Thunder” fundraiser
will be held Sunday, Sept. 17, at 5 p.m. The entry fee is $10 and includes five voting tickets.
Attendees will be able to taste different dishes and vote on their favorites in three categories:
Appetizer, entree and dessert.
"(Duchenne muscular dystrophy) is caused by a lack of dystrophin, a protein that is needed
to hold muscles together. Without dystrophin, all skeletal muscles begin to deteriorate, leading
to paralysis, heart and lung failure, and early death. Duchenne is 100% fatal. There is currently
no cure," organizer said. "Gannon has been offered medical treatment in Ohio called gene ther
apy and they have to be moved by October. It is no cure, but it's the closest medical option we
can get for him. As you can imagine this has put a huge financial stain on the family."
HOME, GARDEN AND FARM PEST TRAINING
The Jackson County Cooperative Extension office is offering Private, Commercial, and House
hold Pesticide Credit hours on September 20, from 12:00-1:00 p.m.
The Lunch and Learn program "Miscellaneous Invaders and Harborage Invaders" will be
hosted at the Jackson County Extension office (255 Curtis H. Spence Drive, Jefferson, GA).
There is no cost for the training, but all participants are required to RSVP by September 18th.

AG FACILITY HOSTS MONTHLY FARMERS MARKET
The Jackson County Ag Facility hosts a monthly farmers market on the first Sunday in
May-October from 2-5 p.m.
The next market is October 1.
This event is held rain or shine.

CRUISIN' COMMERCE COMING UP
Commerce will host its Cruisin Car Show on Sept. 10 from 1-4 p.m.
Classic Cars will be parked along State Street in front and in the public parking State Street
lot.
"Enjoy taking a good look at the amazing vehicles from the past," city leaders said. "There
might by a few new zingers as well! While you are downtown, enjoy stopping in our local
restaurants and shops, too.”
