Silver announces bid for
Commerce council seat
Ron Silver, of Carrington
Place, has announced he is
running as a candidate for
City of Commerce Council
Ward 5.
Silver is a graduate of
Tucker High School, earned
a bachelors of business ad
ministration degree from
Georgia State University
in real estate and urban de
velopment, and an associate
degree in arts from Dekalb
College.
Silver served in the U.S
Marine Corps. He was the
president and owner of
Silver-Drody Sales, Inc, a
Manufacturers’ Sales agen
cy that covered the South
east for 26 years. Silver a
homebuilder for 15 years,
building homes in Northern
Gwinnett County and was a
licensed real estate broker
for Silvercrest Realty. He
was a candidate for Gwin
nett County Board of Com
missioners. In 2015, Silver
was appointed by the grand
jury to serve on the Gwin
nett Board of Equalization.
He was also president of St.
James Lutheran Church in
Norcross for many years.
Silver and his wife,
Ann, have been a resident
of Commerce for 5 years
and the prior 15 years in
Braselton. They have two
grown children, Michelle
and Randy and 5 grandchil
dren.
“Our family and friends
are our number one prior
ity,” Silver said. “I want to
continue to work at making
Commerce a destination
point in order to bring more
people to the city to visit

and live; work on improving
the property curb appeal on
Hwy. 98 from 1-85 to Com
merce more inviting; and
working on ways to reduce
our property taxes. I am
looking forward to serving
the citizens of Commerce in
Ward 5.”
Kinetic by Windstream to
close Commerce retail store
Kinetic by Windstream
plans to close its retail store
at 149 Pottery Factory Drive
in Commerce on Sept. 15.
As customers increas
ingly use digital channels,
including the GoKinetic
website and customer por
tal, Kinetic is reallocating
its resources to interact with
customers in the ways they
prefer.
The move will not change
customers’ home service
options.
Customers accustomed to
paying their bills at the re
tail location have other op
tions. Those include paying
at another Kinetic Connec
tion Center store, paying
by mail, paying through
the GoKinetic customer
portal or enrolling in au-
topay.

Sinkwich III named board
chairman of Athens Academy
Frank Sinkwich III as
sumed the role of chairman
of the Athens Academy
Board of Trustees in July.
Sinkwich succeeded Carl
Nichols, who served as
board chairman from 2021-
23. The Board of Trustees
voted on this succession
earlier this year.
As a member of the Class
of 1989, Sinkwich is the first
Athens Academy alumnus
to serve as chairman of the
board. A trustee for over a
decade, Sinkwich is a long
time member of the finance
committee and most recent
ly served as the committee
chair. He and wife Lacy are
the parents of two children,
both of whom are gradu
ates of the school: Frank IV
(Class of 2017) and Adeline
(Class of 2021).
Sinkwich is the president
of Northeast Sales Distrib
uting (Athens) and Skyland
Distributing (Asheville,
N.C.). He is the third gen
eration to lead the compa
nies founded by his grand
father, Heisman Trophy
Winner Frank Sinkwich, Sr.
Sinkwich attended Athens
Academy for 14 years and
went on to graduate from
the University of Georgia,
where he studied classics.
Sinkwich is the sixth
chairman in Athens Acad
emy’s 57-year history.
Founding Chairman John
Wilkins led the Board of
Trustees for 42 years, un
til his passing in 2008. Mr.
Wilkins was followed by
Board Chairs Gene How
ard, James L. “Jimbo” La-
Boon, Jr., Beth Sanders and
Carl Nichols.

Development with over 700
residences, commercial space
proposed in Hoschton
The Hoschton City Council will consid
er a proposal for a mixed-use development
of 712 residences and 63,000 square feet
of commercial space on Hwy. 53 dining a
Sept. 14 (6 p.m.) public hearing.
The project is proposed for nearly 55
acres along Hwy. 53 on the east and west
sides of Nancy Industrial Dr. and the end
of Amy Industrial Lane.
The applicant, G.R’s Enterprises, Inc,
seeks a rezoning from light industrial (M-
1) to a planned unit development (PUD)
for the development.
The residential portion of the plan calls
for 360 apartments and 352 townhouses,
while the non-residential component calls
for retail, restaurant, office and civic space.
CAR WASH PROPOSED
The city council will also hold a public
hearing on Sept. 14 over a proposed car
wash for 1.38 acres for Hwy. 53 north of
East Jefferson and West Jefferson streets.
The project applicant is Stanton Porter.
OTHER PUBLIC HEARINGS
The Hoschton City Council will also
hold Sept. 14 public hearings over:
•a comprehensive plan resolution to
adopt an official corridor map designating
land reserved for future transportation fa
cilities, including streets, highways, bike
ways, sidewalks, and multi-use trails.
•an ordinance amending the subdivision
and land development ordinance to refer
ence a new code section and an official
corridor map. It will also amend the devel
opment plans and permits section to add
an official corridor map section.
•an ordinance amending the subdivision
and land development ordinance related to
residential and non-residential driveways
to modify standards and specifications.
•an ordinance amending a zoning ordi
nance to authorize the replacement of a
nonconforming manufactured home with
a new manufactured home per amendment
to the zoning procedures law.
•an ordinance amending zoning ordi
nances to provide a new section for small
wireless facilities and add definitions of
terms related to small wireless facilities.
The council will potentially vote on
these items at its Sept. 18 regular meeting.
