Commerce by Candlelight was held on Thursday, Nov. 30, in downtown Commerce. The event featured
pop-up vendors and merchants that kept their doors open late. Youngsters got to visit with Santa Claus
in Spencer Park. The event also featured various music performances and the annual tree lighting. See

Commerce Christmas parade rescheduled for Dec. 9
Commerce has rescheduled
its Christmas parade for Satur
day, Dec. 9, at 6 p.m. The pa
rade was originally planned this
past weekend, but has been re
scheduled to Dec. 9 due to rain.
Candy will be thrown to the
crowd, but attendees are asked
not to run into the sheet to get it
since it will be dark.
“Unloading of floats will be
at the Restore parking lot,” city
leaders said “Do not park in that
lot — it is for unloading kids
safely only. You may enter' at
Advance Auto Store entrance
and proceed to parking lot to
pick up your' child.”

Clark resigns
BOC seat
Move will allow
for special election
in March to fill
unexpired term
District 5 Jackson County
commissioner Marty Clark
resigned from his seat Mon
day night following the reg
ular meeting of the board of
commissioners.
Clark said he resigned
his position now so that his
unexpired term could be
filled with a special election
in March when voters will
go to the polls to vote in the
Presidential Preference Pri
mary.
Clark earlier announced
his intention to run for chair
man of the Jackson County
Board of Commissioners in
2024 to replace retiring BOC
chairman Tom Crow. BOC
member Chad Bingham has
also announced plans to run
for the chairman’s seat.
Clark and Bingham are
required to resign from their
seats when they qualify for
the chairman’s position.
However, that would leave
the BOC with just four
members. All four members

Commerce city manager
taking job in Dalton

Commerce City Manager
James Wascher has submit
ted his resignation with the
city to take a new job with
Dalton Utilities at the begin
ning of 2024.
Wascher will serve as
CFO of Dalton Utilities be
ginning January 2. His final
day with the City of Com
merce will be at the end of
December.
Wascher has served as
city manager since 2016,
replacing Pete Pyrzenski at
that time.
The Commerce City
Council will soon begin a
search for a replacement for
Wascher.
“They will engage Tom
Berry with Underwood and
Company to come in and
consult with council and
staff, make recommenda
tions and then conduct a
search for the city manager
position.” Wascher said.
The council anticipates
this process will take 90
days and Matthew Hailey,
who serves as assistant city
manager in Commerce, will
be the “primary contact” for
the city in the interim.
Wascher noted he’s ex
cited for this next chapter,
but will miss the Commerce
community and the bonds
he’s made during his time in
the city.

my Brown has been named
the winner of the 2023 But
kus Award for being the
nation’s top high school
linebacker.
The award is named for
legendary linebacker Dick
Butkus who played for the
Chicago Bears 1965-73
and is considered by many
as the greatest linebacker in
NFL history.
Brown has committed
to Clemson to play his col
lege linebacker career.
Founded in 1985, the
Butkus Award honors
linebackers at three levels
while supporting causes
important to the Butkus
family.
