*■ EMriMulit,
Judge M— ■ , late of Mississippi. who
wm a gentleman remarkable fora proclivi
ty to exaggerate and tell hard btories, on
one occasion was seated in fro'nt of the
principal hotel in Clinton, amusing a group
of gentlemen with his peculiar narratives,
when he delivered himself as follows :
Gentlemen, in Hast Tennessee, where I
was raised, 1 knew a man who had the
most astonishing strength in his jaws and
teeth of any man that ever lived. I once
•aw him standing on the sunny side of a
barn, with his old wool hat under his arm,
filled with black walnuts and, he just put
them in his mouth and cracked them
as easily as one of you could crack a
chesnut !’ The auiitors exchanged looks
of incredulity. A quizzical and facetious
Wade, known as Kentucky Sachelford,
was present, and heard the Judge’s story,
and remarked :
‘No doubt, Judge, of the truth of all
you have said. Home men are remark
ably strong. Now, in South Carolina
where 1 lived, one of my neighbors was
noted for the extraordinary muscular
strength of his arm I remember to have
aeon him take a hard pine knot, place it in
the hollow of his arm at the elbow, and
by suddenly bringing his fore arm upward,
lie split the knot into splinter and pressed
out all the turpentine iu a stream !*
The narrative of Kentucky was received
with peals of laughter. Judge M be
came indignairt, and springing to his feet
With clenched fist, and flaming eyes, ex

Sbwabdites Bolting.— TheNow York
Tribune has the following editorial para
“We hear that some prominent mem*
bers of the Albany lobby, who have hith
erto professed to be republicans, express
their determination to bolt the Chicago
nominations. This is good news. If a few
members of the legislature of the same
stripe would join them, it Would boa great
blessing to the party, and a great help to
the tickot.”
The “Albany lobby,” though beaten at
Chicago, is far more powerful in State pol
itics than Greelyand his “Tribune.” And
despite his affected cheerfulness, Greely
knows it.
Death of Dr. West.— Dr. Charles

Being a hish-private ourself, we may be
pardoned for suggesting that hereafter on
similar occasions a more general attendance
is absolutely indespensable. No excuse,
except for sickness or urgent business sbold

Is there anything more irreverent and
impudent in the world than this notice,
by the Springfield (Ohio) News, of
Pshaw pok the Shah !—The Shah of
Persia, a particular friend of our boy hood
is dead. He was not a relative of Chief
Justice Shaw, of Massachusetts, although
he was about as ugly in appearance. He
was aristocratic in his tendencies and
used h as a final letter in his name, instead
of to, because it was a taller letter. If the
Shah’s disease hai.dn’t been fatal he
wouldn’t have died quite so soon. “Alss,

Sands’ Saksu*ariu.a, for Purifying the
blood.—How many unfortunate victims of
Scrofula, once without hope of cure, now joy
fully testify their restoration to health to the
medicinal virtues and surprising efficacy of
this invaluable preparation. In all cases where
tbs impoverished and depraved condition of
Um blood is evidenced by eruptions, blotches,
or sores, its operation will be found in the
highest degree salutary. The public are cau
tioned to ask for Saxos’ Sarsaparilla, and
a o other, as a host of spurious imitations
upon which no relitoce i*.'® be placed, are in
the market.

It is very well known we are not pirticu'ar

little cereuony, and with these sentiments we
declined inserting this advertisement until we
