Love and “Highers.”
Why still, swoet Margaret, thus severe;
Abate at leugtb those cruel rigois,
Thou knowesthow 1 love thee, dear,
Thou knowest how I love—thy niggers, j
t * • •
’Tis vaiu to,talk of love of rule,
The heart is no such docile scholar;
I love thee Margaret; like a fool,
For thou hast the “almighty dollar.”
1 love thy poutiug cherry lips.
Dearer than ever bee loved honey ;
I love thy rosy finger tips,
Tiiy laughing eyes, thy—ready money.
) love thy little fairy feet,
rto small’the merest child could span ’em, ‘
Thy cheeks liko peaches fit to eat —
Thy hundred cotton bales per annum.
I love tby glorious golden curls
That grace thy check of alabaster —
Thy little “nigger” boys and girls ;
I long to hear them sail me “master.”
Ah ! yes, to sum iny love for thee
Would baffle all the power of figures ;
Mv heart were iliut indeed to see,
‘Unmoved—thy splendid lot of niggers.
1 luvo the air that plays around
Thy brow, thy form, thy habitation ;
I worship e’en the very ground
Thy lootsteps press—’tis thy plantation.
Tiib Cheat Eastern Coming Soltii.
The Washington corresponds t of the
X. Y. II raid says :
We are to have the Great Eestcrn in
the waters of the Chesapeake. Mr. Gooch
one of the principal directors of the Great
Eastern Company, has been spending two
days here with Mr. Mann, who has taken
such an interest in tlie establishment of
a direct trade between Virginia and En
gland. The mighty leviathan will, proba
bly. early in August, tloiit in the glorious
harbor of Hampton lloads, aul take on
hoard, for her return trip, thirty thousand
bales of cotton. Wo Southerners will not
grumble either at paying a dollar for a
sight of the big ship; and it may fairly be
estimated that three hundred thousand
people will visit her if she comes into the
Chesapeake. And then we will have a
truly international celebration, hallowed
by the memories of Mount Vernon and the
Father of his Country, and attended by
President Buchanan, ico-1 resident Brcci
inridge, leading Senatois and Represen
tatives, the diplomatic corps, anil the af
fair might be so timed as to secure the
presence of tho Prince of Wales and bis
suite. This would be the inauguration of a
new era for the South—the beginning of
the realization of the far-sighted scheme ot
George Washington, who ardently desired
to preserve a balance between the North
and the South, by fostering a direct trade
with Europe from his beautiful 1 olomac
and Chesapeake.
Ktgro Insurrection. —Private advices
received in this city a day or two since,
state that an insurrection had broken out
in the vicinity of Osceola, Arkansas, among
tho Blave population. Our informant
learns that the disturbances were quelled,
but not until several slaves were severely
wounded. The negros, it is thought, were
instigated by worthless white men. — Mem
