Tftf Florida State Debt.
Odt. I’orry, during his Ute absence,
made arrangement for the payment of the
Indian War debt of the State, falling due
in Cliarlestrn and Savannah in August and
September, amounting to some S*i4l,oo.
This debt is justly due by the Federal
Government. It grew out of the employ
ment of Volunteers in protecting the fron
tier from the incursions of tile Setninolcs
during the adm’nistration of Gov. Broome,
lle.fore their discharge they were regularly
mustered into the service of the Govem-
Tneflt, by order of the Secretary of War,
and their payment was thus assumed by
the Federal authorties. But no money
having been appropriated by Congress,and
the vo!.uutecr,s. and their families actually
suffering on- aceount of their hard-named
pay being withheld, the State advanced
the money by a temporary loan in Charles
ton and Savannah. tt is to be hoped that
the next session Congress will relieve the
State.— Tallahassee Floridian.
The I'nkiiulest. cut of All.
We have experienced manifold annoy
ances, and come in contact with all sorts
>t villainy—from stopping papers without
paying for them (that was before we a
dopted the cash system). being necusod of
publishing a neutral paper, down to hav
ing our pockets picked (of a pair of scisouts
and an ivory tooth pick,) but the smallest
and meanest cut of all, was by some low
flung vagabond who dimed to the gable
of our domicil, bent over the lightning rod
and stole off the silver tip!
We only wish a streak of the fluid had
been “thar or tharabnuts” when the mis
erablc vagabond had hold of the rod. We
have heard of stealing pewter off of a
dead nigger’s eyes, lint but robbing an
editor's lightning rod of it’s “pint,”
caps the climax.
Verily, our sufferin':, is intolerable!

Had a Flj on his Nose. —While die
inimitable Tom Corwin was holding
forth in Zanesville npon7lic corruptions of
“Old Buck’s” Administration, just alter
hurling one of his bitt-rst audvet funniest
denunciations, one of his auditors, a rough
looking man, who stood with folded arms,
shook his head violently.
Whereupon Torn said : “You shake
your head, my friend! Well, a man may
shake his bead when there is not. much in
it—without cause to shake it.”
“II 1,” said be of the folded arms
“There was a fly on my nose, and anymau
will shake to keep the flies off—won’t be?',
Torn looked quizzical, and went on to
his next pofyit in regular order.
Another Noble Benefaction. —John Rose,

a farm upon which to place such destitute
children in New York as might be placed
under the guardianship of the “Rose Be
nevolent Association.’’ One of the condi
tions was that a like sum should be raised
by others. At a meeting recently held in
New York, the, trustees of the People’s
College, at Havana, reported that Charles
Cook, of tjlat place, was ready to cotit:ib
nte the additional §300,000, provided the
limn and-institution should be located at
