Free Negroes. —By the laws of Virginia, j
at well as other States, free uegrot s are 1
required to pay taxes to the government,
ana in default, it is provied that they shall
be sold into servitude for an amount and
space of time sufficient to cancel the State’s
aemaud against them. Recently at p e-1
tersburg, Va„ about 400 worthless free
negroes were sold ic conformity to law, for
non-payment of taxes, and brought ten
cents per day. We are of opinion that
these free negroes, if properly treated,
will never desire freedom again. It may
be, however, that their present owners
will so contrive to bring them in their debt
ns will require years of servitude before
they will again de liberated.

A clergyman wbo wt 6 reading to his
congregation a chapter in Genesis, found
the last sentence to be :
“And the Lord gave unto Adam a wife.”
Turning over two leaves instead of one,
lie saw written, and read in an an audible
voice.
“And she was pitched without and pitch
ed within.”
“He had uuhapily got into a desciption
of Noah’s ark.”
Blondon Invitee the Prince to Ridel
The latest item from Blondin. the rope
walker, is a card inviting the Prince of
Wales to ride across his tight rope in a
wheel-harrow. He says “if any accident
should happen, by which Ilis Highness or
any member of the party should be precip
itated into the Gulf below (of which there
is little or no danger) the money taken
from the spectators shall be promptly and
conscientiously refunded !”
Mother. —Young man ! thy mother is
thy best friend. The world may forget
you--thy mother never; the world may
wilfully do you many wrongs—thy mother
never; the world may persecute you while
living, and when dead plant the ivy’ and
the nightshade of slander upon your grass
less grave—but thy mother wili love and
cherish you while living, and if she sur
vives yon, will weep for you when dead,
such tears as none but a mother knows
how to weep. Love thy mother !
S'r David Brewster, inquiring into
the history of the stereoscope, finds that
its fundamental principles were well known
even to Euclid ; that it was distinctly de
scribed by Galen, one thousand five hun
dred years ago; and that Giambista Porto
had, in 1590, given such a complete draw-1
iug of two separate pictures as seen by
each eye, and of tho combined pictures
placed between them, that we recognize in
it not only the principle but the construc
tion of tho stereoscope.

No one remedy is louder called for by the neces
sities of the American people than a sure and sa*>
euro for Fever and Ague. Such a remedy we aro
now enabled to offer, with a perfect certainty that it
will eradicate the disease, and with assurance, found

“ Ci'ttE ” expels the miasmatic poison of Fi
and AcrE from the system, and prevents tie
velopment of the disease, if taken on the first
proack of its premonitory symptoms. It is not y
the best remedy ever yet discovered for this cla of
complaints, but also the cheapest. The large q
tity we supply for a dollar brings it within the rearm
of every body; and itl bilious districts, where Fkveh
\N-D Ague prevails, overt body should have it, and
use it freely, bo* for cure and protection. It is
hoped tills price will place it within the reach of all
— tlic poor as well as t.>- rich. A grtnt supenorit/

left as healthy os if they had never had the disease.
Fever and Ague is iiot alone the consequence of
the miasmatic poison. A great variety of disorders
arise from it3 irritation, among which are Neuralgia,,
Rheumatism, Gout, Headache, Blindness, Toothache,
Earache, Catarrh, Asthma, Palpitation, Painful Af
fection of the Spleen, Hysterics, Pain in the Bowels,
Colic, Paralysis, and Derangement of the Stomach,
all of which, when originating in this cause, put on
the intermittent type, or liecoinc periodical. This
“ Cure ” expels the poison from the blood, and con
sequently cures them all alike. It is an invaluablo
protection to immigrants, and persons travelling or
temporarily residing in the malarious districts. If
taken occasionally or daily, while exposed to the
infection, that will he excreted from the system, and
cannot accumulate in sufficient quantity to ripen into
disease. Ileneo it is even more valuable for protec
tion than cure, and few will ever suffer from Intcr
mittents, if they avail themselves of the protection
this remedy affords.
