Gary Usry announces Re-Election Campaign for Chairman of Greene County Board of Commissioners Greene County Board of Commissioners Chairman Gary Usry has officially announced his re-election campaign. A longtime influential member of the community, Chairman Usry is motivated to continue the success that he and the Board have worked to achieve. Under the leadership of Usry, citizens of Greene County have benefited from a $2.1 million grant for the Firefly Trail Project, and passage of a TSPLOST and renewal of the SPLOST to provide capital funding to reduce the burden on property taxes for the benefit of all five cities and the county. When asked about his most proud accomplishment as Chairman, Usry stated, “Our incredibly committed and dedicated volunteer firefighters are a blessing to the community. However, the growing demands of the community were outpacing the volunteer resources. With innovation and collaboration, the county was able to deploy paid staffing in a welcoming manner and maintain the support and commitment to our volunteers. We did so without a tax increase.” Looking ahead, Chairman Usry is optimistic about what he and the Board of Commissioners will be able to achieve for Greene County residents over his next term. Projects at the top of Usry’s priorities are: • The completion of the jail renovation project. • Expansion of the recreation complex. • Continue to support Public Safety needs of our growing community. Usry and the Board will also work toward renewing the SPLOST and TSPLOST in 2025 and 2026. Speaking directly to Greene County residents, Chairman Usry thanked them for their commitment to the county and asked for their continued support. “I ask that you do me the honor of allowing me to serve as Chairman for another term so we can carry on with the work ahead of us. My pledge to Greene County remains the same: to serve our community responsibly while maintaining a collaborative behavior that fosters trust. I intend to continue to strive to be aware of the needs of all citizens and to work hard to create an environment that enables our community to thrive.” Gary Usry has been married to Machelleforthirty-eightyears, and they have two children and four grandchildren. Traffic stop leads to arrests of two local men By: Billy Hobbs Herald Journal Correspondent A traffic stop on Wednesday, Jan. 3 by a deputy with the Greene County Sheriff’s Office led to the arrests of two local men on drug charges, authorities say. The traffic stop was made shortly after 8 p.m. on Georgia Route 15 South in the city limits of Greensboro. Greene County Sheriff’s Office Deputy L. Sierra stopped a Chrysler Pacifica for a tag light violation. The driver was identified as Joseph Wayne Mize, 58, of the 900 block of Dolvin Avenue, Union Point. A passenger in the vehicle, meanwhile, was identified as William Tracy Stephens, 35, of the 4400 block of White Plains Road, White Plains. It was later learned that Stephens was wanted on an outstanding warrant for parole violation. “While speaking with Joseph, he advised that he wanted to check on the front bumper of the vehicle which he believed he had run over some bushes and was dragging,” Sierra said in the incident report. “Joseph was asked if he had any weapons on his person and he stated that he had a knife in the front chest pocket of his overall pants. While removing the knife, a small plastic bag was located in the same pocket containing a small amount of crystal-like substance.” A search of the vehicle later yielded a small plastic bag containing a green leafy substance, believed to be marijuana, as well as a cigarette pack that contained a rolled up cigar with the same green leafy substance on it. Both men subsequently were arrested on charges of possession of a Scheduled II controlled substance, and possession of less than an ounce of marijuana. Mize also was charged with a tag light violation. The suspects were later taken to the Greene County Law Enforcement Center where they were jailed. ^f~^7 GlVld ON RETIRED VEHICLES FROM GENERAL MOTORS EXECUTIVES!
