The Greensboro City Cemetery Association honored the military people who died while serving in the U.S. Military on Monday, May 25,2020. Frances Strickland read off the names of the brave soldiers who gave their lives for our country and are buried in the cemetery. Music was provided by Mark Turiano of Penfield on the drums, Dan Jones and Warren Weatherford played ‘Amazing Grace’ as well as TAPS’ on their instruments. The presentation was a very nice tribute and we thank everyone that participated!! Greensboro Police Department conducted a distracted and impaired driver operation as the Memorial weekend started. There were a total 86 citations written for hands-free violations and seat belt violations. Arrests were also made for impaired drivers and narcotics possessions. These type of distractions not only endanger the driver but others. Chief Monford would like to commend all of the officers that took part and would like to remind everyone not to drive “INTEXTICATED” and “CLICK IT OR TICKET”. As of Tuesday, May 26, at 12:00PM, the state of Georgia reported a total of 43,586 cases and a total of 1,853 deaths and 7,511 cases of hospitalized For the past ten months Greensboro police officer, Ray Harris, has been stationed in Kuwait with his U.S. Army Reserve unit. Harris and his group returned to the United States recently in route to their next stop, Ft. Hood, Texas. Harris shared his thoughts about his recent tour of duty with Police Chief Rodricus Monford. "I have learned a lot and seen a lot. This was definitely an experience that I will remember forever. I had a chance to work with soldiers that took on any mission anytime. We have been through so much from just dealing with being away from patients. Greene County reported a total of 64 cases with 7 deaths. Other surrounding counties reported as follows: Clarke - 232 with 13 deaths, Oconee - 105 with 5 deaths, Morgan - 37 with 0 deaths, Putnam - 88 with 8 deaths, Taliaferro - 1 case with 0 deaths, Oglethorpe - 58 cases with 8 deaths, and Hancock -191 case with 22 deaths. family to dealing with COVID-19. Absentee Ballots Cast Kathleen Mayers, Greene County Board of Election & Registration Supervisor, reported that as of Tuesday, May 26, 2020, 2,600 absentee ballots had been received out of 4,300 requested. Two hundred twenty-five registered voters have cast their ballot in person during Early Voting. Early voting ends Friday, June 5, 2020. A copy of the sample ballots can be seen on Page 6. Weekly update for the Coronavirus Pickin’ on the Greene is canceled for 2020 Downtown Greensboro’s summer concert originally scheduled for June has been called off. The City of Greensboro and the Greensboro Main Street Program announce that the annual Pickin’ on the Greene summer concert originally scheduled for June 19, 2020, will not take place due to the ongoing bans on large gatherings. After closely monitoring the COVID-19 Pandemic and based on Georgia’s guidelines, a decision was made to call off the event. This decision was not made lightly, but is necessary to keep the staff, volunteers and community safe. “We are disappointed to not be able to bring this event to Downtown Greensboro,” says Ivy Smith, Greensboro Main Street’s Event Coordinator and Content Creator. “But we believe this is the best decision for the safety of our community.” The 2020 Pickin’ on the Greene event may have been canceled, but the date has already been set for next year! Mark your calendars for the 10th annual Pickin’ on the Greene on June 18, 2021. The Greensboro Main Street Program is working hard to provide timely and continuous updates to help keep everyone safe and informed during this time. Many changes are being made throughout downtown to ensure a safe and happy experience when you visit. There are still plenty of ways to enjoy Downtown Greensboro at a safe social distance.
