THE EVENING CALL. w .x No. 201. hoist flag us truce The Filipinos Are Asking For Terms of Surrender Manila, April 28—The FHipiuo.- will seek pence Co) Manuel Argue jtss and Lieut Joseph Bernal, chief of Gen. Buna’s staff, entered Gen. McAr thur’!) line at 3 o’clock thi.-i morning bearing a Hag of truce. They are tn route for Manila by train, to confer with Gen. O.is regarding terns of sur render. Manila, April 27, Operations against the insurgents were resumed with vigor this morning and with small less to the Americans, lhe Fili' pints were driven to San Fernando, nine or ten miles northwest of Calum pit, where they remain at present. The day’s fighting was marked by another American deed of daring which had much to do with the rebels defeat. At 10 o’clock this morning the in ' surgents still held several miles of trenches along the river, ■so Colonel Funston, of the Twentieth Kansas, called for volunteers to cross the river. Two men were finally selected, and carrying a long rope, they swam the river, bullets kicking up lit tle jets of water all around them Neither was hit, and they secured the rope to a tree on the opposite bank. A raft was hastily constructed and on it Col. Funston, with two companies of his regiment, crossed, using the rope as a guidline. Several troops were necessary. Once across the Kansans attacked lhe trenches, with an infilading fire. This demoralized the insurgents and the main body retreated norths ward while the remainder escaped up the railroad under heavy fire. The left flank of the enemy reform ed on the plain north of the river in a second line of trenches, where a futile attempt was made to bold their ground Meanwhile the remainder of the Kansas and the First Montana regi ments slowly crossed the bridge that had been badly damaged and ad vanced on the trenches. The Filipi nos thereupon retreated towards Apa lit, four miles to the north. While that was being done 2,000 insurgents advanced in skirmish line formation from Macabebe, leaving a strong re serve two miles distant. Gen. Wheaton ordered an artillery fire and the rebels began slowly to re treat, when a mounted officer, proba bly Antonio Luna, dashed along the insurgent line urging an attack. The Filipinos rallied ana fought for half an hour, but as soon as Americans got within effective rifle range they resumed their retreat, but in excellent order. The American advance contin ued and three miles of trenches were taken before Apalit was reached This place wag taken and two abandoned trains were found a short distance be yond San Fernando is now in plain view of the American line, but beyond the range of their guns Our losses today were one killed and elx wounded, including three officers. The enemy lost forty—killed and wounded. Thirty-seven were captured with arms. Her Life Was Saved.- Mrs. J. E. Lilly, a citizen of Hanni ble, Mo , lately had a wonderful de liverance from a frightful death In telling of it she says : “I was taken with Typhoid Fever, that ran into Pneumonia. My lungs became bar dened. I was so weak I couldn’t even tit up in bed Nothing helped me, I expected to soon die of Consumption, when 1 heard of Dr. King's New Dis covery. ONE HUNDRED KILLED i Awful Work of the Wind in a Mis souri Town Yesterday , Kirksville, Mo, April 28—'lhe sky emptied its fury in a gigantic tor nado early this evening, when the east side of the town was wiped out. A broad, clear path nearly a quarter of a mile lies through the town. It is probable that at least one Hundred were killed and one thousand injured. It will bo after daylight before an adequate conception of the destruc tion to life can bo had Four hun dred bouses were wrecked and the inmates are either dead or injured. A heavy rain followed the tornado, adding to the confusion and nearly hindering the work of rescue. All who escaped have turned out to res cue the injured and to search out bodies. The American School of Or thopatby, situated here, and the pro fessors and students joined with regu lar practicioners in aiding the injured. The work is being superintended by Mayor Noon and there are nearly enough surgeons for the work in band. All conveyances are being used in bearing the dead and dying from the death belt. A half dozen wrecked houses took fire after lhe cyclone bad passed, but no effort could be made to stop the flames. The lurid light now illuminates the town, and aids the res cuers in their errands of mercy. Newton, a small place on the St. Paul railroad, felt the full force of the storm, being practically wiped out. The dead were numbered thirty-seven, while the list of injured will reach 500, Dispatch from Siox City, says the list of dead and injured it) the tornado which swept over Crawford county last night is growing, Four are known to be dead, while ten are net expected to survive their injuries. In one fami ly a mother was killed and five daugh ters fatally hurt. A four-year-old boy was asleep by the side of hie mother, who was killed. The boy dis appeared. and it was believed that he waa killed, but he was found in a hay stack forty yards away uninjured. The club will go down about fifteen strong, and spend a week or ten days al their old camp on the banks of the Satilla river. The Senate, however, is a law unto itself. It is not bound by precedents. The chances are that it will not be bound by precedents in the case of Senator Quay. He is very popular with senators of both political parties, and it would not be at all surprising if precedents should be disregarded and the senator seated And it is evident that the senator is going to make an effort to retain his hold on his party in his state He has announced that he will be a candidate for the position of delegate to the state convention so his party soon to meet for the nomination of a state ticket. Some of the Republican papers of 1 the state are predicting that if he should succeeds in his efforts there will be a split in the party—a split that will give the Democrats a fair chance to carry the state. That being the case, the Democrats have nothing to complain of in Senator Quay’s political attitude. It is certain that Pennsylvania would be much better off under a staunch Democratic government than Under the control of the Republican officials who now direct her public affairs. It would be diffi cult to find in any other state a lot of politicians who are so utterly indifl’er- i ent to the welfare of the people as those who are at the head of affairs in the Keystone Stats. —Savannah News When Traveling. The Old Man s Prayer- In one of our city hospitals recent ly, the physicians were getting ready to perform an operation. The patient, an old man, was stretched upon the operating table, and when at length all was in readiness, one of the physi cians approached with cloroform. The old man raised bis hand and said: “Wait a moment.” Then folding his bands and cloasing his eyes, he be gan repeating the prayer which he used to say at night, at his mother’s knee : “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep; If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take. And this I ask for Jesus sake. The doctors bowed their beads rev erently and waited, and when be had finished, he looked up calmly and said, “I am ready.” Skillful and tender fingers did tbeir work and after a time the eyes of the old man slowly unclosed again. As he took in the familiar surroundings, 1 a look almost of disappointment cross ed his face, and then he eaid, “As Thou wilt, Lord ” —Charlotte H. Tom iison in the New York Observer, How's This ? . A Western View “The editor confesses no sympathy with lhe critics of the mob who burn ed the negro in Georgia. If ever there j was paliation for a crime, if crime it i could be called, in this case the ven-i geance, quick and complete for the deed of the negro butcher and ravisher, was exhausted. A brute who would | deliberately murder the hueband in j cold blood, in order that he might eat ; isfy hie lust on the defenceless wife, is beyond the pale of even modern bar bariem. The crime was the most hor rible that can be conceived. A people! that accepts a hell as a punishment I for the smaller eine of humanity ought I not to blame human nature for apply - ing the torch to a brute that could in cold blood be guilty of such acts. He is worse than a wild beast, worse than the most savage inhabits t of the most uncivilized portion of the earth. “In this matter it is not a question of race, but the individual criminal, and there are times when 'he public has more reason to resort to violent measures to protect itself against hu man beasts than against wild beasts.
