THE FLAT SHOALS CROWD.
An Intereßing Letter Written by
One of the Boys-
Flat Shoals, Ga., June 7, 1899.
Io Ihe Call: Perhaps some oi
our friends al home would like lo hear
from us, and what we are doing down
here, eo wo will write them n short In
ter through the columns of your paper,
e to inform them that we arrived at Neal
E' safely, and were met there by Capt.
Hartnett with Vehicles lo convey us
over to the shoals, a distance of about
2 miles.
We are now cumfortab'y located at
the spacious and hospilub.o t.cme of
Capt. and Mrs Hartnett, and to say
wo are faring sumptuously would only
be telling the truth, as ail know, who I
have ever been fortunate enough to
be with them.
We are all growing fat, eating good
old country hams, fried chicken, fresh
vegetables, drinking lemonade, cool
milk, champagne-cider, and other
good things. Even Lyndon Patterson
is becoming so abdominally protubula
ted that his friends would hardly rec*
ognizs him
Very soon after we gut here, the
gills of our party—“ God bless their
dear sweet souls”—decided we should
have a set of rules and regulations for
our governance while here, so they
proceeded at once to write them out,
so 1 will give them to you j i«t as we
found them tacked upon our doors
with “iiair— r ?i n ® wonmn , B niost its*
dispensible ornament, and principal
weapon of defense :
Rule 1. All you (Eu) nice boys are
expected to make love to the girls
“Daily.” AU they “Saw—tell” not.
They must get theircourtshipsdown
‘ Pat,” er so(o)n there will be a “Ter*
i i ble” 1 Slaughter” of “Heads ’
If in courting, they are only after
the “Rich-Ard*,” odds will be against
them, for Riches are “Perry”-3hab)e.
That Dav-is a dear boy, but needs a
' Cunniugh-ham” (much) in bis court-1
ship, for his heart is like “Fiynt.”
Lelia and Evie and Carlie and Jim,
We’ed like to make puns
On each her and him
But their names are so hard
We will have to discard
AH idea of punning on them.
These are “Hard-nuts” to crack,
But we will not take them back—
But will end with a "Balla'd."
Now, it is unnecessary to state that
the boys complied very strictly with
the first rule prescribed, but thought
that the others could take care of
themselves, and were certain of the
fact that the “Hartnett’s and Ballards
w nld take care of us all.”
We are enjoying the pleasure of
fi-hing, bout-riding, and oth< * tilings
i< numerous to mention in this short
noli—one of which, however, is to sit
out upon the wide, airy veranda in the
in evening and listen to the sweet
rt rains of music, as it quickens into
under the soft :< uch of the talent*
ed mu-iciat.s that we have with us.
And as the last note from the instru
ments floats over Ihe river to the hills
beyond, and 'he last dj ing echo is lost
in the “shadow of the pines,” we bear
the chaperones calling out midnight;
and all is well, but it is “time all hon
es. people were retiring,” and we
. . i
would retire to dream over the antici
pated pleasure of the following day.
Happily we have not had a single
incident or accident of an unpleasant
nature to occur, to in the least, mar ,
the pleasure of a week’s stay.
And we will leave regretfully, but ,
with many sw<et mt tn mes to cherish, 1
of the pleasant h mrs that we have
•R' tit here, and will I >k forward to
the time wb< n we may n. et again at
this beautiful spot that Nature bis so ,
beautifully blessed Yours, etc ,
