Ths dock in the church tower at

off the hours for thirty years, refused

was able to induce it to resume motion

old enemies come to our aide wo shall

this positive assurance; We shall

The saddest news of tbe war io con
tained io the hints that come now
and tbsn from the interior of Cuba as
to tbs fate of the reconcentradoes.
There wretched noncombatants, for
whom neither the Spaniards nor the
insurgents have shown any considera
tion, are now cut off from all hope o
immediate succor by tbe hard necessi
ties of war and are dying of starvation
by thousands. Tbe fate imposed up*
on these wretched people is one ot tbe
moot horrible crimes of tbe century.—
Philadelphia Record.
Borne of the newspapers are printing
a picture which is alleged to show tbe
smokestack of tbe gunboat Hudson
after she came out of the engagement
at Cardenas the other day. If the
picture is accurate, then tbe Spaniards
must be among tbe moot expert gun
ners io any military service. Tbe
smokestack in the picture shows rents
and indentations indicating that it
was struck not lees than ten times,
while two ventilators within a few
feet of tbe smokestack were shot to
pieces and a corner of the pilot bouse,
also dose at baud, was splintered by a
shot. Thus it wobld appear that the
Spaniard* bad landed not less than
thirteen shots within a space less than
twenty feet eqnare, and ton of the
shots between two perpendiculars lees
than e»x feel apart. We have been
told lb al tbe Spaniards are poor
marksmen ; either that statement or
tbe picture of tbe Hudson's smoke
fc stack io incorrect. —Savannah News.
To-day no American fighting craft
is deemed complete without its belt or
cofferdam of corn-pith cellulose, says
the Chicago Chronicle. The pith of
.the stalk is cut out and ground into a
odhree, mealy mass, and then under
preesure molded into blocks or brie
quoltea. Io this form it is packed
into the cells made for it against the
sides of the ship and about the region
of tbe water line. Tbe stuff weigh*
only a fractional part of a similar
bulk of water. Now, when an enemy’s
shot goes tearing through tbe outside
plating and pierces the oeUuloee, if
water be admitted by tbe rolling cf the
vereel, the cellulose at once swells
automatically and plugs the bole in
itself as well as in tbo plating, thoa
preventing a dangerous admission of
water to tbe ticklish region of tbe
water lino A curious virtue of thia
stuff is that it does not exert a damag
ing pressure as corn would do under
like circumstances, but rests content
simply with plugging the bole. Os
course, this material would be scat
tered by explosive shell fire, but even
then, being fire-proof, it would not
