Theas moorings are gone. The proper thing now ia to make calculations for the future. New issues are to be met,new policies form ulated and old things are to pass away. There can be no-going backward now * The pronunciation of Arkansas was officially settled by legislation, and it is Arkansaw. Now let our lawmakers lake Hawaii in band at the first op portunity. If we are to Americanise the country, let us also Americanise the name. For an American province or territory Ha Wah-ee is simply hor rible.—Augusta Chronicle. A young man at Auburn went to enlist. He was given a newspaper to read, but could not, and was just as successful when asked to write in English, and when reminded of bis deficiency he said : “Veil, I can’t read nor write in English, but I can fight like b——in any langwilcb and I thought id vos fighdtersyou wanted, not professors.” He was enthusiasti cally accepted. •SaSaMßßUrißri- It Is said that when a stranger first goes to visit Niagara be is oppressed by the roar of the falls. The whole air aeems impregnated with sound, and go where be will, be cannot escape its dreadful monotony. The cataract ad vertises itself, but the next day the sound seems fainter, the roar of tbe falls fsilsto disturb hi* slumbers, and after a time be ceases to bear it at all unless be stops to listen al it. As finally reported to tbe adjutant general at Washington, the list of killed and wounded in the fighting at Biboney on July Ist and 2d foots up S 3 officers and 208 men killed, 81 offi cers and 1,203 men wounded and 79 enlisted men missing—among tbe dead. Tbe total lose of 1,593 which is extraordinarily large in proportion to tbe number of men engaged, may be set down as tbe costly premium paid by our commanders lor with modern weapons and means of defense behind intrenebments*. They know now that to assault an intrench dd enemy from the open field is only to waste human life. Even tbe business men who pay 25 cents per word for cablegrams from New York to London have bnt little idea bow much tbe newspaper* have to pay for their news, observes an ex change. For instinoe, the price of a cable from Manila to New York is 12.25 per word. The messages have to be received and transmitted a score of limes before reaching its destinatior. A single message has cost some of tbe papers considerably more than a thou sand dollars, and fortunes have been spent by some of tbe larger papers al- ! noct daily in collecting tbe news from 1 all parts of the globe. Perhaps the pa- 1 per spending the las'geet amonnt for lews since the opening of tbe war, is ' be New York Bun. This paper has I ts exclusive new* service from all sec ioos of the globe, employing the beet ] nd most reliable writete of the entire 1 icwspaper world, and tbe almost uni I ersal verdict among them is that tbe 1 l<ms them all. ’ — 1 1 To Care Constipation Forever, WnCsMueta Candy Orthanta 10c or Sc.
