It Is said that when a stranger first
goes to visit Niagara be is oppressed
by the roar of the falls. The whole air
aeems impregnated with sound, and
go where be will, be cannot escape its
dreadful monotony. The cataract ad
vertises itself, but the next day the
sound seems fainter, the roar of tbe
falls fsilsto disturb hi* slumbers, and
after a time be ceases to bear it at all
unless be stops to listen al it.
As finally reported to tbe adjutant
general at Washington, the list of
killed and wounded in the fighting at
Biboney on July Ist and 2d foots up
S 3 officers and 208 men killed, 81 offi
cers and 1,203 men wounded and 79
enlisted men missing—among tbe
dead. Tbe total lose of 1,593 which is
extraordinarily large in proportion to
tbe number of men engaged, may be
set down as tbe costly premium paid
by our commanders lor
with modern weapons and means of
defense behind intrenebments*. They
know now that to assault an intrench
dd enemy from the open field is only
to waste human life.
Even tbe business men who pay 25
cents per word for cablegrams from
New York to London have bnt little
idea bow much tbe newspaper* have
to pay for their news, observes an ex
change. For instinoe, the price of a
cable from Manila to New York is
12.25 per word. The messages have to
be received and transmitted a score of
limes before reaching its destinatior.
A single message has cost some of tbe
papers considerably more than a thou
sand dollars, and fortunes have been
spent by some of tbe larger papers al- !

all parts of the globe. Perhaps the pa- 1

The Best Company is the Company
that does the Most Good.
MUTUAL INSURANCE CO.
OF NEW YORK.
IS THE OLDEST IN THE UNITED STATES AND
THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD.
Since organixation to ths present time, it has paid and now holds on
policies not yet doe the enormous sum of $716,000,000.
. Its dividend record is unsurpassed by any other company in the world.
It piotects your dividends in case of death and provides for. your old age.
See that your policy has this clause inserted in it. _
As compound results are the source of life of all the old line companies,
what is best for the company should be best for the insured. And for best
results take a policy in the grand old MUTUAL LIFE.
Fathers see to it that the daughter, the pride of your heart, when as
sailed by the vicissitudes of life and touched by the hand of fate, shall
be provided with a guaranteed income lor life. The MU HI AL LLr B, the
strongest financial institution known on the globe—twice as large as the
Bank of England—writes that guarantee.
And to the patriotic soldier who feels called upon to avenge the wrongs
tn hi* country, we say don’t forget the loved ones at home —the Mutual Life is
prepared to take care of all. And for the benefit of those who have a policy
in this grand old company we give the following extract from a letter of the
president, Richard A. McCurdy:
“I wish you to assure every policy-holder in this Company
that his rights will be fully protected under all circumstances
and tha no one need hesitate to respond to the call of patriot
ism or duty through fear of the forfeiture of his policy.
RICHARD A. McCURDY, President.”
