oheXi^rlo, coo l M J r - s, iop for repairs. To do
.H.i.n. no,i,„a, iii tint I must pay an expressman 35
sKiMi rowiuti! o^ios ccn t, to take it over, the same to
return it some day, and 20 cents to
the cooper to mend it. That would
figure 70 cents, while the tub cost
only 00 cents when new. The
cooper might repair it at once or
keep it kicking around for a week.
It would be cheaper to buy n new
one, but still cheaper to fix the old
one myself, ltow did I do it?
Weil, three or four weeks ago I
picked up un iron tub hoop in tho
alley and laid it away. It now
came in play. I took olf a piece
about two inches long and drilled a
hole in cither end. Then I drilled
holes in tho broken liuop to match.
When the holes were ready I
brought llie ends of the hoop to
gether, laid on a splice, and with
two soft rivets and the help of a
hammer and small anvil I had a
hoop as good as new nnd lmd made
the repairs at a cost of not over one
cent.

Huttermiik i* the innoceut li|
that il i* proposed lo iol
in llie barrooms of Iowa to take
the place ol the proscribed alcohol-
Ip eilmulants.
The dog was bartend for, and as
Lincoln, sppreaobed the bad|
man, elbowing b(a way through 1
erowd, he said:
“I'll invest a quarter In yonr
game, eir.”
The badger operator looked at
Lincoln’! hungry dog and smiled
as be took tbe (liver quarter.
Lincoln caught the deg and ted
it op to tbe barrel. Hastily grab
bing tbe mastiff, he threw It Into
tbe opening ’totber end drat.
Tbere was a pause of a second,
and then followed a lively scrap*
Inside tbe barrel
“Hold on, tbere,"orled tbe man
ager. “Fair play—"
But be was too lata with bit
remonstrance. Ont sprang tbe
badly-frlghtoned dog with tbe had-
« er sticking to hie hindquarters,
'be erowd parted, sad away went
tbe dog and badger into the Inner
field of tbe rsce-traok. The hed
ger atuok like e brother, teems
ran away, woman feinted and the
crowd roared. Lincoln foirly went
into spasms of mirth, the fun was
so enjoyable.
Tbe countryman owning the dog
was paralyzed, as was tbe badger
owner, who set up a great howl
and waa mad enough t* fight
“Produce your <50," said Lin-
oeln to the hedger-keeper.
“Foul nlay, foul play," cried the
chagrined gamester, “and I’ll never
pay it”
Here it where Lemon came in
serviceable. Catching tbe bad
ger’* friend by tbe neek, he cried:
“Give up tbe $50 or I’ll walup
you."
Lamon’e herculean proportions
were too argumentary to be trifled
with, and the money was banded
to Hr. Lincoln, who in turn gave
It to tbe countryman.
Tbe dog was well paid for, and
tbe badger business closed
