Bui somehow I liken lit
tle clean dirt scattered around Just
to enjoy the contrail when wo do
clean up. I dont think a man can
enjoy a clean shirt till he gels one
dirty. When I showed Mrs. Arp
my lingers that the peaches had
made so clean it reminded me of
the venerable Judge Hillycr. the
old patriarch, whom I used to ven
erate when a boy, tor lie was band,
some and eloquent, and u-ed lan
guage with such precision and ac
cent. He was always looking into
the reason of things—the why and
the wherefore nnd If he saw any
thing strange ho stopped snd pur
sued and inquired until he got to
the bottom ot it. The flrst time
ho ever went to New York, How
ell Cobb was bis companion, and
Ilawc’l bad a bard time in gstllng
Judgo along, for lie wanted to sco
everything and know everything.
“Now, Howell,” said ho, “just stop
right here and toll mo what that is,
and what it 1s for. Howell, do yon
aupposc that all these people liavc
I S ot P rtflfl 'ng business that hurries
them along so fust? Howell have
you any idea what tho store of
Stuart's cost?” Cobb was hurry
ing along a back street when tho
Judge slopped, and looking over a
window screen in a room, saw the
heads and shoulders of two men
nsc« urn going up nnd down with
curious motion. Ilisaurlosity was
oxcitcd, and saya he,“Howell what
arc those meu doing.” “Oh, I
don't know, Junius. Comcalong”
said Howell, “wo will nover get to
the hotel if we keep stopping to
examine everything yon sco.”
"But Hoivcll, I want you to look at
those meu. They are engaged In
something very peculiar, and con
scientiously, 1 would like to know
what It is.”
Howell peeped through an open
ing in tho screen and snld, “Why,
.1 (inius, they aro treading up dough
in a trough, they aro making
baker's bread. Don’t you sec?”
The judgo was amazed. Ho
looked earnestly at tbom as thoy
tramped the dough with their bare
legs and feel, and with great em
phasis, said slowly anil distinctly,
“Howell, do you suppose their fcot
arc clean?’’ '“1 haven’t a doubt of
it, Uillyor,” said Cohb. “1 know
they aro clean by Ibis time.” And
lie Lurried him along.
Cobb said afterwards that the
judge was very lond of baker’s
bread, but bo noticed that bo did
not eat any more of it in New
York.
But folks got tired of eating the
j and stove wood snd tbe old darkey
, had a big bed of coals by daylight,
i and bad tbe meat on, and after
breakfast we built a table and soma
plank scats and put up a swing lor
the obildren and swung the bam-
mook, and toted down some chairs
and put everything in shape for the
company. Of course I invited Mrs.
Arp IIrat and foremost, and then
tho kindred and friends who are onr
welcome guests. The girls fixed
up the vinegar and pepper and but
ter to liasta tho meal with while it
was cooking, and they inado nn old
fashioned Brunswick stew, and I
roasted n lot of green corn in tho
shuck under the hot ashes at one
end of tho pit, and whilo every
thing was in a weaving way about
13 o’olook I blowcd the horn for
tbe company and about a score ol
them camo down and were delight
ed with tho prospect and tbe ploco,
K very body seemed happy, especi
ally tho children, and Mrs. Arp
organized herself a toasting com
mittee of one and In dne time pro
nounced it all very good and ready
for business. Gallant gentlemen
carved tho odorous carcasses and
prepared it for distribution. The
stew was declared splendid. I no
ticed that the married voniou all
flavored it with the hot onion sauco
and it always seemed strange to
mo how soon after marriago a wo
man begins to lovo onions. The
meats camo an iu iluo tlmo and
everybody got n sweet snd Juicy
rib. The ribs n-o the best part of
anything, and I reckon that is why
a woman is so sweet for alio was
made of a rib whilo man was made
of dirt. Alter ibis course wob over
tlio girls surprised us all with
lemon pics and cako and frozen
ahorbort, and after that we all
rested snd played cards, and hail
musio nod song on tho banjo, and
the men told some big yarns which
the youog ladles belsived and the
old ones dident. Cant fool a mar
ried womau long with yarns. One
of our party told about hunting
deer up in the Cohutla mountains,
and ho rode np a dill so steep that
when he got most to the top he
pulled the top burrs from n pins
treo a hundred feet high tbit grew
at tho base of the mountains. An
other onu told about killing lv
wild turkeys at one shot away out
in tho Indian nation wheic be said
thoy broke down tho trees, and
there wero fifteen thousand killed
on one creek in tho month ot De
cember. These sort ol yarns are
catching and one calls for another,
and so I was Just about to wade in
when I noticed that Mrs. Arp was
