Milo Olin, of Augusta, have declined the honor if serving ns electors on tile St. John electoral ticket. In my hum ble opinion they have acted nobly, id their courso merits and should receive llte approbation of every true democrat, whether he be a prohibitionist or otherwise. This a no time for side issue*, side-shows nor side-saddles. St. John, Butler, and even Lockwood sbouhl beig nored on the present occasion, and let it' be a square, open light be tween Radicalism and Democracy. Every man, whatever may he bis color, his creed, or to whatever putyhemiy have heretofore be- loagel, il he desires an honest, faithful and economical adminis tration of the affairs of the goveri • ment, he should at once nnd earn estly espouse tbe cause of purr, u.adulterated Democracy. Let us try Cleveland and Hendricks one term, nnd if they disappoint is there will be plenty of good men— much b tier tuen than Blaine and Logan—ready and willing to lako their places four years hence. An old gentleman came into tbe store to-day and asked the price of bacon. I told him, twelve cents He looked astonished, and exclaim ed: ‘'Meat at twelve cents and cotton at eight and a lull I What are the poor farmers to do?” 1 re plied: “Raise vo ir meat and buy *“"**»; n,',Mr l „ !> ;7:i r 'w' h ,M What cotton you wnnt. Th* Dcnxocrnilc Committee ot Work, New York, Oct. 22.—At the democratic political headquarters everything is in good shape r or the contest lor Tuesday, two weeks hence. Tbe managers never felt more confident, and the most hope ful reports are being received every hour during the day. Too bolt of the independent republicans is now taking a definite shape, and the republicans are just beginning to realize the strength of this ele- ment, whieli they heretofore dis countenanced. There is no doubt but tlmi it will bu a serious loss to the republican vole, anil will figure very prominently in the summing up ft Cleveland's vote in this stare. The independents have complet ed a very elaborate and painstaking canvass of trie state. They have precisely 85,320 names of solid re- publicans signed to pledges that they will nut vote for Blaine. Fully 80,000 of the total have voluntary pledgctl themselves to vole for Cleveland, while tbe remainder re fused to sav what they would do. Added to the number giv<-u there are thousands ot republicans who simply said to tho canvassers that they would not vote for Blaine or Oluvelund either, and no mention was made of St. John or Butler, thus really placing the (roll against Blaine a-, in >re than 100 000 votes, or a number almost equai to the holt against Folgi-r two years ago. I’he latest and best estimate of the St. John vole in forty counties of his state places it at 21.600. The feeling among democrats at head quarters is one of oonfidcnce, ami ney are uluiminj New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Indiana ant) Lite solid south. To attempt to check tho tide which threatens lire overthrow ol his lifelong hopes, Mr. Blaine, if lie statements made at the repub lican state committee's headquar ters are to be believed, will turn Iris caravan towards lire cast the miter part of this week, und on Monday night next will give an zhibition at A.ngelica, Allegany louniy. The following day he i* expeeted, according to thsse sane iutliorit.es, in this city. He is noi ntirely satisfied with tho work o' the state committee. If reports are to he believed. In fact, it is the opinion of old campaigners that no more incompetent a state commit tee ever managed any candidate’s canvass. The unbounded and unblushing ohcek of the republican state cam paign committees in issuing an addreBS congratulatory on the re suit of the election in West Vir ginia and Ouio, is laughed at by the dem'icra-s. It oharao’erizid tho “republican victories" in those states, and in Vermont and Milne as * most significant.” It di-cl r res that in the long public life of their candidate no vulnerable point can be found, and with such saJsfac- tion asserts that “the enemy is still in retreat.” Advices from Ohio indicate that the republicans ure by no means sure of carrying that state in No vember. Among business circles here po litical feeling is at a fever best, and il the cleuliun was left alone in the mds of New York business men, Cleveland would bury Blaine in an uviiaouoeof voles. It Iras liven practically decided to have a m miter parade of busi ness men's Cleveland clubs at an early dale, at which speakers of national reputation will be present. A Cleveland and Hendricks mass meeting will be held in the broad space at the foot of Wall street Wednesday afternoon of next week under the auspices of the Down town Merchants' Cleveland club, the co operation of the Cleveland clubs In the various exchanges has been solicited, and the Hon. Carl. Sehurz and Daniel Dougherty, ot Pniladelphia, have been invited to speak. The originators of this demonstraiion, among whom is Joseph J. O Donohue, hope to make this the largest political meeting ever held down (own. With the democracy of New York united there is oo reason why Clove- had iboul I not carry New York Mate by 40,00a aqjoMt/t A United States detective told a teporter yesterday, say s the Nash ville American ol Oct. 21, that there were a number of $20 coun terfeit silver certificates in circnla- H in In Nashville and other parta of the Southwest. The counter feit will be easily detected bv those who are posted, hut in order to give the public the benefit of the detective's experience, tbe follow ing delects in these notes are stat ed: In the notes no attempt has been made to imitate the fibre paper on which all genuine notes of the series 1880 are printed. The large seal ami the two I >rgc XX in Hie centre of tire note have a Dark red appearance, while on (lie genu ine the seal and XX ure of a dark brown, or uhoculute color. The words “Silver Certificate” appear in panels twice in the upper bor- dor on the face of the note. In the panel to the left, in the coun terfeit, 'he leticra R. T and Fin the word cerlificaro are engraved wrong side up. The counlerleit is a triflle shocier than the genuine, and dark and greasy. The portrait of Stephen Dicatur is poo ly en graved, anil will not compare with the genuine. All that the detect ive lias seen, so I'ar, are numbered B 1.467 X und B 14 87,415 X. The numbers ure uneven, hut have a fine blue color, closely rosembling tho genuine. The plates are still in ihe hands of the counterfeiters, who are correcting the errors above mentioned from time to time, so that nil $20 silver certificates i f this series should be handled with care, as the geometrical lathe work if fair and liable tjihe ivc. The next lot issued will prohalriy be much belter than the first two hatches, with which the counter- leiters are said to have flooded the money market in tire Southern country. fho United States detectives are looking for the plant, which it supposed to ho In tbe South. A Democratic Barbecue. Indianapolis, Ind., October 23. —A democratic rally and barbecue was held to day. the crowd was tho largest ever assembled In tho town, numberlu > a trim 25,000 per sons. Tbcru was a large industrial parade by town-hips and a fine ar ray of unifirmed clubs and bands. Sixteen beef and n dozen sheep failed to satisfy the hunger of the crowd. The arrival ol Mr. Hen dricks was greeted with great cn- thndssm, and his address was ie- oeived with rounds of applause. Sperehoi were made by ex Senator McDonald, Durbin Ward, Judge Thurman and others. In the eve ning there was a large torchlight procession. Tho dodges in polities make a plain, blunt, honest man ashamed of bis lack of ingenuity. A street car conductor in New York gives away the fuel that ho gets $26 a week from the Republican commit tee, besides bis regular pay, for work among the drivers in behalf of Blaine, lie says a good many bright, sharp fellows are hired for the same work.
