is now the object that engages
principally the attention of the
Mauon talkers and the public Jgcn
erally. The people must bare
something outside of their business
to engage their attention—some
thing to talk about. It is an ab
sol-ite necessity, and the State
Fair is about as good as anything,
and better than many, ami perhaps
noi ls the attention ol idler, from
s imothing worse. The Fair will
undoubtedly be a great success if
the present outlook is anything
like a true index to the coming
week. It will tie a gala week for

On Sunday the managers of the
telephono offices in Mtoan and
Montgomery connected instru
ments with the telegraph wires and
made an experiment of conversing
between the two cities by telephone.
Manager Ingram conneuted bis in-
strum ml with the wire at ibis oily
uhd quite a number of our citizens
conversed with the citizens of both
.Macon and Montgomery, sad every
word was as distinct as though tliA
parties had not been more than a
Hundred yards apart. Those in the
otllce here could alto hear the con
versation between Macon and
Montgomery will, equal distinct
ness. The experiment proved a
perfect success. Tue telephone is
a wonderful invention, and it is
gelling to bo more and more a ne
cessity every day.

easily ascertained and there is no
longer doubt that tho drill can be
heard in Clarkston, which is ten
miles distant. Tnere is a ledge of
rock cropping nut in the town which
is undoubtedly of the same torma-
tion us that now being penetrated
by drill at the well. The formation
extends or fl .res out in tho abnor
mal development of Stone Moun-
uin, hides under tho earth again,
ampping out in more or less promi
nence now and then for miles and
miles down the Georgia railroad.
