A Parlor Car rortsr*a Experience.
Thaddeua Rich, the former valet of
John L. Sullivan, when that gentleman
was sporting editor of The Illustrated
News, had five years’ experience on the
Chicago trains of the New York Central.
“1 did fairly well with the company,*'
said Thaddeas: “I had only $15 a month
salary, but my tips mado it up to about
$50. I mado a good many friends. I was
treated with especial kindness by the
Vanderbilts, Mr. Armour, of Chicago;
Col. Harker, police commissioner of Cin
cinnati, and I don’t know how many oth
ers. Tho most liberal traveler I ever met
was Mrs. Williams* of Cambridge, Mom.
I mean Mrs. Williams, tho 6istor of
Georgs Lewis, the Lewis who is celebrat
ed for giving diamonds away. This lady
not only tips the porter but tips the driv
er, the guard, tho fireman, tho cook, the
waiter, and every servant on tho train,
not with paltry nickels or a dollar, bat
with $5 bills and somotimen tens.
"Speaking of liberal peoplo I mustn't
forget to mention John L. Sullivan. He
never gavo mo less than $5 for blacking
his boots on tho cars. He often gave mo
more. Especially ono morning when he
had jumped on mo. Yoaseo he was talk

make him comfortable. Tho moment 1
touched him, however, he leaped up and
wo both fell of a heap on the floor, and
with such a racket that everybody wak
ened up. John L. woke up, too, and waa
much disgusted when ho surveyed tho
circus, as the bedclothes had come with
him from the top berth. I gathered my-

A Letter from On® Wk® Knows th® Trav

Hot All of Which Are Sever®.
Nsw You, Nov. 20.—When a man
has passed through an experience like
that of Henry M. Stanley and conquered
bis right to faxno by the hardest kind of
battle; when, after spending years in
fighting hb way among savages, plod
ding day In and aay out through African
jungles, carrying hb life in hb hand
and for months not speaking bb native

to civilization and bringing back with
him a long missing explorer, ho returns
to Europe, honored by kings and princes,
exalted by scientists and praised by all
men; and finally, reaching hb American
borne, he greets his old Mends with tho
simple, unaffected cordiality that char
acterized tho beginning of hb career—
it must bo confessed that success has
neither turned hb head nor heart.
I was prepared to see Stanley changed
both physically and socially. It seemed
impossible that a man could experience
so much vicissitude and not somehow
show ib impress. But deepito tbo jeal
ousies ho lias encountered, the dissen
sions among name of hb lioutenanb, the
ingratitado of Emin Pasha, tho ugly
controversy that has grown out of tho
killing of Maj. Barttelot by a Ravage
chief, who, it is alleged, thus resented an
injury dono to hb wife, tho criticisms of
tho foreign press, and lastly tho tortures
of the inquisition he has undergone at
the hands of tbo interviewers—notwith
standing all these afflictions, I found him
the loyal, worm hearted friend of old.
In the presence of others than intimate
acquaintances, however, the strong in
dividuality of tho man asserts itself, and
hb bearing b cold and dignified almost
to tho degree of sternness.
Physically, or rather physiognomio-
ally, tbo change was more apparent and
startling. When wo parted sixteen

white and there appears to bo loss elas

all of which Stanley ascribes to the Af
rican fovor and the hardship and anxiety
incident to hb last expedition. Thereto
no mistaking tho keenness of hb eye,
however, and the determination written
in every lino of his bronzed features.
Personally Stanley never was a hand-
somo man, although hb broad shoulders
and thick neck would attract any
who admired strength, baft hb face
always, as it b at present, endowed with
on Intellectuality that U nnmlrtakahlo.
It b the face of a man born to com
mand, resolate, aggressive, and one that
at times may boeomo dangerous in ib
expression. For thto reason it b not
difficult to understand why even olono
and singlo handed he ooold both intimi
date and encourage hb savage followers.
Doubtless it b this imperious manner,
added to rigid discipline, that not only
kept hb white associates in cheok, but
aroused tho rpirit that has since their
arrival in England found vent in recrim
ination and complaint <
The most vital points of interest
noctod with Stanley’s last expedition
having been already mado public with
much detail, our conversation chiefly
concerned early reminiscences, and it
was a surprise to observe how closely hb
memory retained the incidents of a meet
ing that took place as far back as 1874.
Ho was then on a vi4l to Now York,
after having found Livingstone, although
lib reception was very different from
that which has been accorded him now.
In fact, some of the newspapers doubted
hb exploit and pronounced him little
loss than a fraud. Ho felt it keenly. Ho
reminded me, too, of hb proposition dur
ing our interview at that time to organ
ise an American company with a capital
of only $100,000. of which he proposed to
advanoo from $23,000 to $10,000. for tho
porpoao not merely of continuing hb ex
ploration?, but to establish trading poets
in the neighborhood of Lake Tanganyika
and other localities be had visited, where
were to bo found immenso stores of
ivory, oils and gums. An endeavor was
made among somo of tbo capitalists in
Wall street tbo very next day to raise
the required sum, bit to a man they
turned their bisk upon tho proposition,
and tiros lost at once a chance to realize
great fortunes, sad to do what Stanley
afterward induced the king of the Bel
ts to undertake, namely, to plant his
there and establish a state.
f anley abo humorously recalled what
be termed ono of hb "castle* in Spain,"
that be saw growing up as the result of
hb newly acodmulated wealth. After
the company above de
scribed he was to return to New York,
