. Is What Ameren* Should Save oa Sugar by
the free List.
Americus should save $10,000 a year
on aocount of sugar being placed on the
free list, ss this ought to mean a reduc
tion of two cents a pound In the retail
price.
It is questionable, however, whether
the consumers will really get the benefit
of this piece of governmental considera
tion. The sugar refiners are all In a big
combine—Spreckles Included, and It Is
for them to determine what the poor
pullc shall pay for Its sweetening.
The consumption of sugar per capita
li the United States is about fifty
pounds a year. In Americus the con
sumption would then be about 500,000
pounds, and tho saving at 2 cents
pound, which the oonsumor In justice
should have, would make the $10,000.
The Louisiana sugar crop is about
425,000,000 pounds, and has to meet
the reduction, but the government com
pensates for that by paying the domes-
tio producers of sugar a bounty of 2
cents a pound.

A Thousand Tears Ago.
Id the year 000 after Christ what was
the state of Europe? The Gotha, the
Vandals, the Franks, tho Huns, the Nor
mans, tho Turks and other bnrbario
hordes had invaded and overthrown the
Roman empire, and hod established
various kingdoms upor. its rains. Read
ing, writing and ciphering were separate
and distinct trades. The masses of tho
poor and rich alike were wholly un
acquainted with the mysteries of the
alphabet and the pen. A few men
known as “clerks,” who belonged to the
priesthood, monopolized all learning and
set themselves up as special artists.
Kings did not know how to even sign
their names. When they wanted to
sign a written contract, law or treaty,
which some "clerk" had drawn up for
them, they wonld smear tho right band
with ink, and slap it down on the parch
ment, saying, "Witness my hand."
At a later date some genius devised
the snbstitnte of the seal, which was
impressed instead of the hand, bnt
oftener beside the hand; hence the law
phrase, “Witness my hand and seal."
At the date of which wo write every
gentleman had a seal with a peculiar de
vice thereon. There were no chimneys
in use; the fire was built in the center
of the house, BUioke escaping through a
hole in the roof. Chairs were unknown,
knives and forks were unknown. Even
the nobility sat on botes and blocks and
ate meat with their fingers.—St. Louis

Manufacture of Gauze.
In the ordinary processes of the loom
tha warp threads are always kept paral
lel in whutever way tho weft threads
may be twisted around them. Bnt in
making gauze two adjoining warp
threads are completely twisted aronnd
each other between tho two rows of tho
shuttle or casts of tho weft Somo pe
culiar apiiendages of the loom are re
quired to effect this. One consequence
of the mode of interlacing is that the
textnre is light, the welt threads being
farther apart than would bo practical in
other webs. In appearance, ns well os
in mode of producing, gauze occupies a
kind of medium position between plain
weaving and plain lace or bobineL—

was a sufferer with a place on my under-

treatment of different physicians, but
they done me no good, I had lost hope
of being cured by medical treatment. I
then went to a doctor living in Florida,
who treated them by art. After going
to him it got well, apparently, for a
while, hut returned as bad os ever. I
then concluded to try P. P. P. (Prickly
