CRISP SAFE.
A cureful perusal of a speech delivered by
Hon. Charles F. Crisp, of Geo-gls, In Con-
Brers,on May 9, ISM), shows him to be per.
fectiy sound on tarlfTreform and all demo
cratic m.asures. We see no r aaon why At
11.nee memb-rs should not suoport him for
Speaker.— Southern Alliance Farmer.
Whatever may be the differences of
opinion between Editor Gantt and some
of bis Georgia brethren of tile press,
there is the right sort of harmony on the
question of tlie fitness of Judge Crisp
for the speakership. The organ of the
Alliance having spoken thus favorably,
it is now In order for little Tommie Wat
son to reconsider, and save the country
by voting for Judge Crisp.
As it is well understood by the friends
of .1 udge Crisp that Tommie’s opposi
tion will insure his defeat, the most
strenuous efforts are being made to con
ciliate the little giant, and The Timkh-
Recobder hasitsemi-oflicially that the
basis of compromise is that Judge

It is stated that Henry M, Stanley lias
been appointed governor of the Congo
Free state, If his character has been
correctly portrayed he is tho man for the
place.
Secbetabv Blaine is again reported
to be in feeble health and in need of rest,
but he will hardly take it until ho lias

W. C. Cash, who killed Ed Young at
Dallas, Tezaa, for despoiling Ids home,
was acquitted Tuesday of the charge of
murder, and was re-married to his wife
with whom he has not lived in several
years.
President H arrison certainly has no
cause to complain of the warmth of his
reception in Atlanta yesterday, as will
seen from our Atlanta special elsewhere.
Our people respect the ofllce, indepen
dently of the man who fills it.
President Harbison and party are
In Georgia to-day. They will reeeive a
respectful weleome, but there is no en
thusiasm In Georgia for the man who
would Impose a lot of negro postmasters
upon the peoplo of the South.
Senator Prefer, of Kansas, states

other of the old parties. He will have I homes were broken up, they had no

take tlie “bark" off little Tommie in his
rulings. Thus the war cloud passes
over and peace is assured.
A haii sight.
One of tlie most pitiful spectacles was
witnessed at the Barge Office iu New
Yol k on Monday.
One hundred and fifty-three steerage
passengers landed, rescued from the sea
when the Utopia went down. They
wero a motley, forlorn and broken heart
ed company. Tlie very clothing that
covered them was donated in Gibralta,
and as for tlicir luggage, they had none,
for their hags, boxes and truuks are at
the bottom of tho ocean
It was not so mucli their poverty,
though, that rendered the scene pathetic.
They wore the mere remnants of once
happy and hopeful families. There
were fathers who had lost their wives,
wives who had lost their husbands,
children without either parent and pa
rents without ohlldron. In one instance
a father and his son wore all that was
left out of a family of eight. In another,
a fine little follow of nine had lost not
only father and mother, but all of his
brothers and sisters.
When the panto stricken crowd found
themsolves in the water they clung to
whatever came handy and were powor-
less to help each other. The boats
ploked up this man and that woman,
this wife and that husband, did all that
brave sailors could to save everyone, but
when the roll was called there was
hardly a group without a break.
When told that they bad better return
to Italy they shook their heads. Their

and the contest promises to be pro
tracted. .
The Athens Ledger ot Monday credits
to the Trlbnne-of-Home an editorial of
The Tihks-Recobder on the restric
tion of immigration.' While Editor
Branham would consider it no left hand
ed pompliment to be given credit for tho
thunder of The Tihes-Rkcordeb, he la

Simply because tbe Trlbune-of-Rome
is always opposed to the Atlanta news-
. papers Is no reason that It should charge
nil the other paper* in the State which
agree with them of being bought by a
“stick of taffy." Atlanta has two good
dally papers, and the editors of Georgia
recognise that fact, as well as the people.
Ix its card yesterday nominating Mr.
D. C. If. Burkhalter for the presidency
of the Farmers’ Alliance, a typographic
al error made The Times-Recorder say
that tho gentleman was not a "confeder
ate," when it should have read “not a
candidate." An unintentional injustice
was done Mr. Burkhalter; for all confed
erates ore proud of their war record,
and noue more justly so than this gen-
t'eman, who la one of the few men left
who are under no peraqnal obligations
to Governor Northern by reason of hold
ing a Colonel’s commission on bis Ex
cellency’* staff. All that The Tihrs-
ccobder regrets Is that its nomination
not equivalent to an election.
and they preferred to face life In this
new country.
Editor Branham's liver Is slightly
out ot order in consequence of indiges
tion resulting from some tough pabulum
given by the Homans, If tbe following
is a correct statement of his grievances:
The Tribune, tii* Runner and tbe Ledger,
Tus lima Un-mutts, ihe Times and the
Advertiser, ami tlie sec - ly newspapers of
he smaller to'ns,nil advertise tbe eltlrs

pan**-—but, oflsner Hum otherwise, they re
ceive many curses, few kind words, nnd in
flntlealmble remuneration In the way of
dollara.
While The Times-Rei ouiieh stands in
the front rank of those papers which
devote their whole energies to upbuild
ing their towns and their country, It is a
pleasure to be able to asy that The
Times-Recorder gets no curses, but
kind words from everybody, and a most
liberal financial support from the best
people of Americus, No community In
the south appreciates more fully the ad
vantages of a good local paper
than Amerious, and her people stand
ready to respond to any sort of demaud
that means the support of The Times-
Recorder. Tbe people here recognize
their self-interest In tbe matter; there
can be no live, prosperous, successful
town without a hustling newspaper in It,
and whatever money is needed to pub
lish such a paper is always forthcoming
In Americus without a growl or a curse.
Let Editor Branham educate the noble
Romans up to tho proper standard by
holding up to thorn the record of Amer
icus, and The Times-Recorder, and bis
growls will bo turned into songs of
praise,
