The grandest theatrical treat of the
closing season Is yet In store for Amer
icus.
Scott Thornton, Atlanta’s own Scotty,
the peer of any living tragedian In Ful
ton county, will present “Richelieu” at
Glover’a opera house at an early date,
That Is, It the management c;.n ar
range with his advance agent for a date,
ae they are now trying their beet to do.
Scott Thornton! The mere mention of
bla name thrills the soul of those who
have gazed enraptured upon Booth, Bar
rett, Salvlnl the elder, Forreat and other
luminaries of the theatrical firmament
whose peer he is.
And Americus is to have him come
here with his euperb troupe, for surely
he will not decline coming when he ie
made aware of the ovation that awalta
him.
Yesterday when the management of
our opera houae read In the Constitu
tion of the very enthusiastic reception
accorded Cardinal Scott in Athena the
night before, they determined to have
him here at any cost.
Immediately the advance agent of the
troupe was communicated with, and his
reply Is awaited with eager Interest by
those to whom the precious secret was
confided. No one doubts bnt that the
reply will be favorable.
Chief Lingo's face wore an anxious
expression when told of the probable
coming of thle celebrated aggregation—
this mammoth concatenation of earth's
greatest—fearing doubtless that the surg
ing mass of humanity that will fill the
theatre might prove too much .for hie
efficient force.
But be was quickly assured that no
trouble on that line would ensue.
Messrs. Glover, Lanier and Whitley will
take the precautionary steps to bare ev
ery butcher and grocer In Americus put
under bond not to sell one pound of
welner-wurst on the night of the per
formance.
Furthermore, anyone detected In the
act of bringing stale cabbage, baok-num-
ber eggs or other aromatic herbs Into
or about the opera house, will get six
montbe at the briokyard. Throwers of
cannon crackers and boquets with long
strings tied to them for the purpose of
foollog the actors, will be guillotined
after the first act.
The report that a wire netting will be
stretched across the front of the stage is
totally without foundation. Nothing of
the kind was ever Contemplated for one
moment. Scott Thornton has been to
Americus before, and though ho was not
then the celebrity that he now Is, he is
well remembered, and will bo giected
by hundreds of moet ardent admlren.
Already the demand for seats, both par
quet and gallery, la phenomenally great,
and the biggest crowd that over paoked
the opera house will turn out to wel
come Atlanta's ownliest own. A reply
will doubtless be received to-day, and ae
it Is almost certain to be favorable, the
ater goers may prepare to see the grand
est performance over witnessed on our
stage.
